As a bonus I got to meet a man who worked for the Rock Island and a another man who worked for Milwaukee Road Soo line and Canadian Pacific and I met a guy on that bridge who volunteers for the friends of the 261. wished my uncle was still alive to go see it. He was an engineer for CSX years ago,and retired. but he died four years ago. He used to travel around to some of the steam meets. He would've really liked to see it. He had a huge collection of train videos.

Great video. Why the diesel engine in the consist, and were there passengers in the passenger cars?
@LukeLovesTrains-Mr.RailYard
@LukeLovesTrains-Mr.RailYard 5 лет назад
Sometimes the diesel helps physically with the grade but most of the time it helps with using it's Dynamic brakes on Long descending grades it also helps with switching the train around to a better accommodate the General Public
@rudycarlson8245
@rudycarlson8245 3 года назад
It also provides electricity to the cars and it serves as back up power in case the steam locomotive breaks down on the main line and It can get it off the main line Necessary evil in today’s day and age

All steam locomotives have a clanging sound especially running slow. Anyone know what that sound is?
@LukeLovesTrains-Mr.RailYard
@LukeLovesTrains-Mr.RailYard 5 лет назад
Well thanks for watching
@d.aardent9382
@d.aardent9382 5 лет назад
my dad worked for Illinois Central as a repair car man and called it the yard bell, it is a bell the engineer runs to warn anyone on the ground in the yard and around the train cars that the locomotive is under power and moving. They also run the bell when approaching and moving through street crossings.
@jerryhubbard4461
@jerryhubbard4461 5 лет назад
@@d.aardent9382 not the bell. I am talking about part of the running gear. All steam locomotives have this sound. Not sure what it is. A deep sound of either the driving wheels or spent steam coming out of the boiler.
@b3j8
@b3j8 5 лет назад
@@jerryhubbard4461 Jerry not sure what you mean as both the things you mentionvare different noises. The "spent steam" sound is just that, exhaust steam/flue gases coming up put of the exhaust stacks. The mechanical sounding "clang" is just the slight amount of slack in the driving rods. Did that help any?
@jerryhubbard4461
@jerryhubbard4461 5 лет назад
@@b3j8 I think it does come from somewhere in the mechanical part like you say in the big rods. All engines have this sound. The bigger one just more pronounced. Thanks.
