It's Brutus's 60th birthday and I came looking for a video. My Dad worked for P&M for decades and was on the board of Brutus. He passed away a few years ago but would have loved to be here for that. Thanks for the video. It brings back a lot of memories.
Got to go by and see Big Brutus this past weekend. You don't have a clue how big this thing is, until you are standing right next to the tracks, and then climb around inside of it. Awesome museum!
Thanks for sharing. I grew up in Southeast Kansas and got to see Big Brutus several times as a child. I even got to climb to the top of the boom before they closed that portion of the tour off. For reference, the shovel on Big Brutus is nearly the size of a two car garage.
Great video! I went to see Big Brutus for the first time this weekend. I was amazed. Will be going back soon. Thank you for posting the video. I hope to see other old videos posted of Big Brutus working. There has to be many many other videos taken over the years that are being stored. Hopefully folks discover the videos before they are thrown away and/or lost.
Big Brutus was built in 1963 by Bucyrus Erie for a company called P&E. Brutus was taken out of service in 1974 and was placed on display in Kansas. She sits there on display in Kansas today.
The only one left. We tried to save the silver spade with the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park, but came up short. The spade was 21 stories tall, and had a 109 cubic yard bucket, were Brutus is only 90. We do however have the bucket, the door off the back the cab and the big huge Bucyrus Erie signs off of the gantry. Along with several other parts. I have a one foot section of hoist cable and power cord that sits on the stand beside my chair. I never got to see the spade before it was cut up, I got involved at the very end. But IV dedicated my life to not let any more machines of this magnitude and rarity be lost to history. I'm currently getting involved with a group trying to save Big Kate in Lynnville Indiana, she's a big walking Dragline over 50yrs of service. Being 26yrs old I missed all these monsters in action and it pains me. So, I refuse to stand and let the big machines of my generation be forgotten and scrapped.
@@dustywelchcraneman6614 any luck so far? I've been trying to raise awareness for her sake. She's worked a hard and faithful life and deserves a good retirement. If there is a group that I can contact, let me know. I'm willing to volunteer. I live 4 miles from where she sits.
@@dustywelchcraneman6614 from what I've heard, Peabody was evaluating whether it would be more cost effective to walk her over I64 and install a new tub, or fix up the now 22 years dormant Squaw Creek Dragline which is already on the other side of I64 but is in far worse shape than Kate. I'm going to see if I can get in contact with the Warrick County board of commissioners and hope they can open a line of dialogue with Peabody about Kate's preservation. Maybe even the Squaw Creek Dragline as well
I upload a video of Big Brutus several years ago, and at the time, I could not find any other video of it here, or anywhere on the web for that matter. I was glad to share what I had with people who may have wanted to see it. Afterwards, a couple more videos were uploaded as well. I just took down my video of Big Brutus. As many of you may or may not be aware, RU-vid has decided to start inserting ads into EVERYONES videos whether they become a member and register for profits or not. To ad insult, they have decided that before you can register to receive any of the money, you must have what is a ridiculously high number of subscribers, 1000. Which will never happen for most of us who simpIy wanted to share an experience with others.
