In the middle of the old coal-mining prairies of southeast Kansas sits a mechanical wonder, the world's largest electric-powered shovel in existence, Big Brutus. I traveled to see the shovel, and whatever you or I may think of coal nowadays, it is a wonder to look at. Towering 15 stories tall, Brutus held 1.7 million tons of material in its ballast room to counter the weight of 90 cubic yards of dirt and rock the bucket could hold with one bite. It did not dig coal, but removed overburden to get at the coal. davidgerardart.com
