I just wanted to say thank you. I felt super emotional watching this video. It doesn’t matter to me if your hair is long or short, relaxed or natural. Because you’ve taught me so much about my 4c hair than anyone in my 21 years of life. You’re right my hair is fine the way it is, I don’t need anyone else telling me my hair should look a certain way. I am who I am and that’s all. Thank you so much for what you’re doing. You’re truly an inspiration. 🤍
You were my inspiration for trying to grow my relaxed hair at 70. All was good and covid hit. A year with protive styling and now with 4 inches unstretched, I prefer having relaxed. So, will not do the.big chop. Will get a mild relaxer and continue my growing journey. Thanks for all of your time and tips and continue to be blessed and inspirational.
I'm here for it, her is identical to my daughter. I just posted a vid on how I'm going to try to get her to waistlength. It will be interesting to see how their journey correlate
I must be doing something wrong then. Because my hair WILL NOT grow in its natural state. However, when relaxed, it will grow past bra strap length. I love natural but I’m tired of being bald y’all. Lol
It really is sad what happened to you Seun, . I'm going through the same right now. After nurturing my hair for 4 years, it grew thick and long, and I was 1 inch to waist length until I went to a salon stylist yesterday. I had already detangled my hair when I arrived but through her obvious lack of skill she removed my sections and re- wetted my hair and the washing left it so tangled. She started yanking my hair with what was a step from being a rat tail comb. I told her she was hurting me and that I she should use a wide-tooth comb on my 4c hair but she refused. I tried to leave but she had already done so much damage. She ripped off about 3 inches of my hair. Clumps of my hair were all over the floor and I was so traumatized. To make matters worse everyone in the salon started commenting about it. I left there feeling humiliated, violated and I felt very lesser than. I got home and said nothing. I tied my hair up and I didn't want to look at it. I had to cut so much of the yanked pieces and my hair is now at my bra strap. I'm so happy for these comments because they're making me realise it wasn't my fault and I've learnt never ever to let someone determine my worth like that. And I've also decided never to let anyone else touch my hair.
The same thing happened to me! But the difference is after she started detangling the back of my hair I got up and left! Why this lady try to push me to sit back down! Unhand me! Lol I’m sorry this happened to you. She set me back to a lot of my hair was coming out at the back. And same as you I pre prepped my hair she ain’t have nothing else to do but part and twist my hair 🙄
How about "Let's grow our Natural 4c hair together" series .... Weekly episodes. From the washing, hair styles & duration. We can all follow through and all.
That is right, and any other "Black women that can grow their hair that long, should always save it, after having that much chopped off? Start their own hair weaving products, since they say not all weave hair is natural hair, some is mixed with lead products and other things, and we all know some of those countries selling all this weave hair is not always natural ingredients? There are some tribes in Africa, where the women can grow hair really long? Of course your may never see it on National News media, they keep them hiding, when exploring countries,
I wish for my sistas that they learn that whether they are relaxed or natural that they ARE enough. I’ve been natural for almost 12 years but I don’t think I’m better or more black than my relaxed sistas. Hair is so personal and I think however a sista chooses to wear her hair is HER business.
Thank you! I don't get why some put others down based on a hairstyle choice. I love that we are the most diverse especially our hair. It's all beautiful to me.
I say this all the time I use to be super duper pro black in my day and rocked perms (those born in the 70’s and early 80’s should understand) the Afro phase had died down in the 80’s I went back natural in 1998 I was not as deep in my wokeness (more balanced 😁) but if the core of who you are is fake your texture of the hair don’t even matter. DO YOU ✊🏽✌🏽🙏🏽
True that and it does not always have to mean someone hate their hair, or themselves if they choose to wear their hair straight, or relaxed, curled, perm or natural? People wear their hair to suit them, not society! Not everyone is disliking their hair either? "One thing about it, you have a variety of ways to wear or style your hair, that most women don't have, and look good with it!
The funny things is when people with kinky hair wear their hair in their natural state/true form and let it be (especially around the edges) we get dragged when we relax it ,we get dragged ...We can’t win so you might as well live in your truth and let them talk while you handle Your business.✨
That is right, don't have anything to prove! Those are the same people that would tell you, that you need to have more kids, because you only have one? They may have four or five yet telling you, need to have more, not everyone want more kids?
"Well some people don't realize that some people have that natural fast growing hair, depending on the diameter, texture, ect.. Not everyone has hair like that, no matter how many products, we use?" I don't know why people don't know this, yes you can use products to make hair do the way you want, make it healthy, in some cases make it grow, but some people hair just grow a certain way different than the next person, not everyone hair is going to do the same things? I have a friend that always had that type of hair as to where if she cut it short, it would grow back in six months compared to mine, it would take twice as long to grow back, but never would get that long?
@@desireawinton9745, yep just learn your hair porosity and learn 2 retain the length & fullness and your hair will grow. Porosity determines the products u need 4 your hair. Wash(learn how 2 wash hair properly), properly condition , properly deep condition 1x every week or 2 weeks, learn 2 retain length & fullness, learn hair porosity, take care of your ends & scalp, and boom long healthy hair. There’s probably things I missed but those r the basics.
I agree with you, i've had to transition cos of a scalp issue (wasnt the relaxer) and this pandemic, so seeing my hair dresser wasnt possible but has been really helpful this whole time but i was relaxing cos I wanted to and nothing else. Loved my relaxed hair i'm liking my natural hair (braids is my best friend though lol) and see how this journey goes
I relax but I mostly do my hair up in cornrows. I get a lot of hot flashes and I wear my hair in a way that keeps me comfortable. My hair is very thick and when the roots are natural, I get very hot and sweaty and uncomfortable. Before I grew my hair, I wore it in a short natural for about 25 years and I loved it.
I think we need to find a solution for black influencers mistreatment. I see it a lot where they are wronged in utterly abhorrent ways. But they are forced to say "I am grateful for the Opportunity " it wasn't an opportunity if it took away from you and left you feeling lesser than. We need to call out these companies using black influencers like slaves.
@@DORCASDIASRIESMAKINGMEMORIES I literally wanted to cry. Personally I think that person may have been jealous and vindictive. Her actions were extreme and unwarranted.
You're right. One of the reasons why Kanye west could sell tattered clothes was because he wore it with confidence like he was wearing the new hit thing. People paying good money to look homeless.
I remember crying in the shower when I was transitioning in college 11 years ago. It hurt detangling the two different textures. I agree, if I had to do it again, I would have just cut it off and wore wigs.
@@africanodyssey4805 It's good to know who you are and where you come from and to specify it rather than claiming a color as a nationality. Other nations don't claim colors as their nationality. (Also, i'm not trying to start confrontation either. I just want people to go study and actually find out who they are.) It doesn't just stop at slavery. Our history goes way further back. It just requires reading and searching and you can find we did not always identify as a color nor claim one as our nationality. But others have referred to us by color, different hues or other things instead of the proper name and I guess ignorantly over time we just accepted what others called us and forgot what we were originally.
That's lazy though. They should stop forcing their hair to do things it just can't do lol. Lol I'm not changing my opinion. Honestly most of the black women who perm their hair either 1. Are just use to it because they had it all their lifes. 2. Thinks straight hair is prettier. 3. doesn't have the time for natural hair (lazyness if we never were introduced to perms or heat y'all won't be saying this). Or 4. Forced their natural hair to do things it can't do so decided it is "soooo hard to take care of"
Don’t we have enough judgement from men? Must we women judge each other on our journeys now regardless of how different they may be? We’re no longer slaves but damn they still have divided 😕
@@stanfatou2002 if that’s the case don’t wear lotion forcing your skin to do things it’s not doing. Stay ashy. You see how that can be applied to a lot of things.
Congratulations baby girl! Do YOU! Straight, long, short, kinky. It is all beautifully YOU! Take charge of your life and shake the dust if someone doesn't like it! Walk in confidence and know that Jesus loves you! You are wonderfully made!
You are the reason why I decided to go back to relaxed hair! 💯 after cutting my hair twice to try the natural journey. I am proud of both journeys! So happy to have found and figure out what my 4C hair loves! Natural wasn’t fit for me atm in my life reason why I went back relax. I am so happy for YOU!!!! Being able to experience BOTH!! You WILL LOVE THIS JOURNEY IT IS THE BEST! To find that renewed bond with YOUR HAIR!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I’m so sorry they made you feel that way about your hair. Kinda reminds me of when people would make fun of my acne and I would avoid looking at my face.
Really ,people say that 🤣. Relaxing your hair don't mean that you hate yourself 🤦🏽♀️smh . I love my children's natural hair , it's so versatile and Beautiful I love my relax hair cause I feel it's easier for me to manage 👉🏾that doesn't mean I hate myself 😂 smh . The things that go through people mind 😂
i think it’s because a lot of kids grew up hating their own natural hair and forcing their parents to relax their hair. then they push that narrative onto all people with relaxers because that is their experience even though it is not the same for everyone.
@@taliahtaylor4518 I think ur onto something here but personally I also think that many kids(myself) particularly didn't even know what 'natural' hair was.... my mum would just take me to the salon when it was 'due' but I never really questioned the process and just did it so I could roll(perm) my hair cuz I liked it. I was ignorant and if I recall, at the time I didn't even understand the term 'undergrowth' no matter how you explained it to me. I honestly went natural without the intent cuz I hated how short my relaxed hair was and went on a low cut cuz of my impulsive need to start over. That's when I discovered my coils for the first time and fell in love with this whole new dimension my hair was offering me, but I honestly love both sides and wouldn't mind my relaxed hair if it had length or at least the thickness my natural hair gives the illusion of. At the end it all boils down t what makes you happy and what you're comfortable with.
@@komeegbevurie6283 i agree. that is why i said it is not the same way for everyone. i met tons of people who forced their parents for a relaxer because they wanted straight hair like on tv. personally, i never knew about natural hair either because everyone in my class had one too. i remember my mom made me go natural and i hated it until i started got use to it.
Sis, I just combed out my locs after 14yrs! And then I cut off another 8inches. Idk what made me do it 🤣 but I'm loving my hair the way it grows out my scalp ❤🙌🏾
@@Kmaryd2 I'm glad you are loving it! Some days I am just so confused lol. I am not sure what moisturised hair feels like for sure. Sometimes I think I am still stuck in my relaxed years when putting grease in my hair meant moisture
I love your videos because it was a break from the “creamy crack” judgement. You challenged the stereotype of relaxed hair can not grow. I tried to grow my hair natural and realized it’s not for everyone. I love myself. I love the skin I’m in and relaxed hair will not change that . Thank you ♥️ Thank you so much for your tips and I’m looking forward to your future videos or your change.
I can heavily relate to wanting to grow your hair out to show people that black people can grow hair. That was why I started on my hair journey also because my friends and family were telling me that my hair wasn't going to grow long cause black people just don't grow long hair and yes did I prove them wrong. But after I grew it long, I wasn't excited about it, I didn't love it and I always found myself admiring women with short hair. So I cut my hair and if someone is ignorant enough to think black hair doesn't grow that's their problem not mine
Agreed about longer hair not being all that it's cracked up to be. For me it wasn't about proving anything but rather just feeling like I shouldn't be conforming to societal standards when regarding our hair so I went natural back in 2016. I struggled with natural styles and never truly mastered any technique so I have kept my hair in braids and twists for the last year or two. For whatever reason, I truly believed that longer hair would end my hair woes. I assumed twist/braid out would look better, detangling would be easier and just overall management. As of now, my hair is past my ribs and I can say the grass is not greener. The thought of having to deal with my hair once I remove my protective style actually gives me anxiety. I've been dropping little comments here and there to my friends and family about shaving it off and it's almost like they get offended!
@@bossytweed6664 haha yes I also thought that having longer hair woild make my life easier. That my styles would look better especially and I coild even be lazier with styling but I learned fast that wouldn't be true
It's sad that we have to explain why we want to keep our hair in a certain way. As long as it's healthy and we feel happy with the way our hair is, that's all that matters. Congratulations on reaching your goal, you're gorgeous queen
You know what I realised? Since you managed to understand your hair and kept it long and healthy in its relaxed state, I'm excited to see how it flourishes in its natural state 🍃 It took a lot of care and patience to grow your relaxed hair that long, and I'm sure the same principles apply to natural hair
Sis. I am so proud of you, so thankful for you. It’s so beautiful to hear your earnest and genuine heart, setting out with such a beautiful goal. And getting to watch your journey AND see you REACH and EXCEED your goal!! You’re so beautiful whether natural or relaxed, and the big chop looks good on you! Signed, An excited subscriber, note taker and Instagram friend, haha
Woah! Jamie watches hair videos, in my mind I think you make music 24/7. Of course that's not realistic, lol. Edit: I've always wondered, are you relaxed, texturised or natural Jamie? You're beautiful in and and out, I'm just curious.
I've gone natural to relax to natural again. I too wanted to prove to people that black girls really can grow long hair! Yes, you can definitely grow hair both ways. Whichever you chose is perfectly fine! I really dislike that people try to shame us for it. Anyway I've binged a few of your videos about your hair journey and the protective retention method as well. I look forward to watching the rest of your journey.
The stylist didn't know what she was doing and tried to blame you for her inadequacy. She had no clue. A true professional stylist knows the rules when dealing with our hair and you don't shred the hair with a hard brush and not know how to match the picture. I hope she was fired. Who knows how many heads of hair she has destroyed. That experience was a trigger for past trauma. I'm so sorry you experienced that. ❤️❤️❤️
I gave up on salons. I found a good hairdresser and literally only go to them even if it means leaving my city. Some of these hairdressers and their negativity as well as lack of skills kills me. Thanks for always being u.
I agree. I stopped going to hairdressers because a lot of them don’t even know how to take care of black hair and can’t tell you how to grow your hair. Now I have a hair stylist that takes time and cares for my hair. She also doesn’t rip through my hair with a brush! A previous stylist was detangling my natural hair with a brush! ( not a detangling brush) No ma’am. I left that hairdresser and never went back.
@@catinamercer omg yes, they don't have the knowledge, and some even the skills. The yanking of my hair was also something I didn't like as well as blaming me or a product when something doesn't go right with the hair. It's madness that we pay for such treatment.
Omg so true! One of last times I went to a "hair dresser" was like 10 years ago. I had stopped perming my hair for a few years prior to this visit and I just wanted a wash and flat iron. The hair dresser berated me for not having relaxed haired. Questioned me repeatedly about why I didn't get relaxers and complained non-stop about how difficult not was for her to do my natural hair. Broke a comb and a hair dryer comb attachment in my hair and concluded the visit by telling me she would just get a relaxer if she was me. I was stunned that I was actually about to pay this woman for that abuse she inflicted upon me. I knew that there was nothing wrong with my natural hair, because two other hair stylists in that same salon had slayed my hair no problem in the past, they were just busy that day, so I knew it was all about her ignorance and lack of skills, but it still made me angry and left a sour taste in my mouth. It's very difficult to find a hair dresser who understands natural hair, let alone can style it. I been staying out the salons.

This reminds me of me but in reverse. I went natural because I wanted to make a statement that I was being true to my roots. Literally and figuratively. 😂. I finally relaxed it because I am not my hair. I was so done with that space.
I have a love-hate relationship with my natural hair so ive transitioned from relaxed to natural 4 times over the past decade. Im currently transitioning back to natural but this time Im getting sisterlocks (because Im done with high maintenance hair in general). As women we are allowed to change our minds and experiment as much as we want. It is not as serious as people try to make it. As long as you're healthy and taking care of it, it will grow back no matter what you choose, so have fun with it!
@@SummerTyme2023 I agree I'm about to be 1 year into my sisterloc journey and because of the pandemic I had to take the self retie class early and doing my whole head myself makes me really appreciate my lady so much because it's hard however I dont think I'll go back to loose natural any time soon
@@glamglam8347Maybe yours isnt but my hair most definitely is. Its 4b, long and super thick so I couldn't even think about not combing it unless its in a protective style. Also, maintenance level is subjective and i dont want to do hardly anything to my hair anymore. Ive been wearing it in braids for years so I only have to do it on wash day every 6-8 weeks (and I really dont want to do that). So that's my idea of low maintenance.
If you can grow your relaxed hair long you can DEFINITELY grow your natural hair long! You challenged me when I first started watching you and I thank you for that. Why did being natural mean so much to me for Black women? The reason I went natural was after getting really bad chemical burn. I only got relaxed by a hairdresser but my scalp hurt for so long. I thought "this can't be good for me" so never got one again. I had never looked at the ingredients. They are scary! I respect you as a researcher and as my sister. This mission of yours is beautiful blessed one, regardless of where you chose to take it ❤️
I am SO excited to watch your natural hair journey. Your natural hair is BEAUTIFUL. And the great thing is, you can still do protective styling whenever you want to give your natural hair a break. I have a strong feeling in the next couple of videos, your hair will rapidly grow out of nowhere and we will have to refer to this video for comparison. I wish you the best in this journey and thank you for being so informative.

Sounds to me like the lady was jealous of your beautiful hair....for a person to constantly find a problem or constantly make it seem like your hair wasn't good enough...she was mad her hair wasn't that long.....long hair or short hair...your absolutely stunning 😍 and im rocking with you on this new hair journey‼️💕💕
awww your videos did help me when i decided i wanted to go back to the creamy crack after 8 years natural 😅and this just goes to show that hair is versatile and it's all a fun journey that we black folk shouldn't be policing. cheers to new things, Seun ❤️
Haven't watched all the way through yet since I'm about to go to work but omggg I'm sitting here with my mouth open. Lolll I never thought you'd chop it off.
All hair is hard to maintain or it is going to smell, become oily, fallout, etc. No hair is gold - it is just hair. Everything in life takes effect and practice to maintenance - I mean anything. It's just that simple!
@@kathygreen2659 why are you bitter because she said Africa hair is gold? Of course Africa hair is gold, magic & power because it beats gravity. White hair smell if not washed in a day but black hair can go days without wash and still smell good. It’s the fact! Take your jealousy else where Karen
What is African hair? Coz you know there are indigenous countries that have bone straight hair? You mean curly hair is magic how it shrinks and is so versatile.

Sad video. Aint nobody but the devil told this girl to cut her hair off😩 1st Corinthians 11:15~But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering."~ That stylists was demonic and deceived her out of hate and jealousy. Never fall for satans tricks people!! Read/listen to your Word, repent and ask Jesus for protection. Satan knew what would break this girls heart and he used one of his ol tricks to do it. Also how she was trying to belittle others just so she would look good as a "professional" stylist. That stylist didn't know what she was doing and she shouldn't blamed others for her incompetency.
I think it's wonderful that you made the decision to go natural while you are young. I got my first relaxer at the age of eight, and didn't stop relaxing my hair until I was 42 years old. I believe as we get older the hair thins, but it thins even more if were constantly putting chemicals on them. It took me a long time to get my natural hair and scalp in good condition after relaxing for so long.
I was just thinking how anti black the campaign seems when I realized it was a relaxer campaign. But really, everything makes sense. As a natural who hates anything related to the push of more European standards, that incidence breaks my heart. The stylist did not respect you nor your hair, and the fact that you had to question everything you knew was wrong to remain what you thought was professional is exactly the black woman's experience in this racist country.
You know how much you’ve grown when you can’t work hard at something and let it go and start over with no hard feelings and your even that much more awesome when it was your own choice and not forced on you because of outside circumstances where you had no choice.
Listening to you describe your experience with that hairstylist made me cry... Thank you for telling your story♡ There are so many toxic hairstylists out there that try to make you change everything about yourself. They broke me down for years telling me to dye & straighten my hair because my natural hair didn't quote go with my face. I'm now chemical free, but it's an adjustment- and sometimes I still hear their voices in my head. But I finally found a hairstylist who doesn't tell me to change my hair, & she works with what I have- it's changed my life for the better.
Seun this is such an epic video to end your relaxed hair journey. I almost cried listening to you. You are such an inspiration in soooo many ways. I admire your honesty and courage and hard work. Ive learnt so much about hair from you, not just you pushing hair products. You really teach what it means to take care of ones hair, relaxed or not , long or short. You are also very beautiful. I admire your simplicity and your honesty(i just had to repeat this). We all have down times and i can only imagine how traumatic that event was. I’m so happy you’re doing great and achieving more goals Soo glad i found you on youtube🥰🥰
You have helped me so much grow my own hair and literally made me passionate about my hair. Before I just left it and sooo much of it broke off because I could not handle it being natural. When I found your videos they helped me so much to see relaxer as not some betrayal of my ancestor and my hair has grown soooooooo long just following your simple advice. Thank you so much for that because I think texture in general in the black community is soo complex and controversial and we just put each other down all the time for how we wear our hair but you're always so positive to and helpful to everyone.. I will always support you and I am excited to see what you'll post next :)
I'm amazed at how you managed to handle two textures at once, I couldn't even tell! You've always been the person I've seen as the best at doing your hair, so I'm just excited to see what new videos this texture brings.
there are my luv. You just have to search. TBH i never searched for it but rather finding a video on something (can't remember lol) and hers popped up some time later. I watched hers then another 1. Olivia Jae is 1, she's actually on a break from youtube atm but she has great videos and lovely personality and theres another 1 but forgotten the name (apologies, i'll find it on my phone for you) and I also follow Tyiece, she has recently actually gone natural now but is really just about taking care of your hair and i'm sure she would have made the same videos if she was still relaxed also. i'm actually transitioning now but i'll continue to follow them cos their videos make sense and have detail rather than just 'your hair will grow like crazy' lol.
I big chopped my hair 8 months ago and before I did, I binge watched literally all your hair videos because I was so curious about HOW to actually take care of my hair. OMG !!!! You were one of my fav relaxed youtubers and you've helped the hair community so much. Congrats on your big chop and the start to your natural journey! #TransitionGang.
It’s crazy you said that in the beginning because I’m currently going through this now . I had someone ask me “can black women grow their hair long”? And it pissed me off because other races and our OWN genuinely don’t think we can grow our hair past shoulder length . I’m now on a journey to prove people wrong about us not being able for grow hair . So I totally get why you started your journey! Happy you were able to prove people wrong and now start fresh💕
You showed me that my love of longterm protective styles that I can leave in for 3 months has a place in a journey to grow long healthy hair. You showed me that relaxers were not responsible for my not retaining length but that my stylists and I’s rough handling of my hair were responsible for my excessive breakage. Even armed with this knowledge I recently allowed a stylist to roughly handle my hair and I will have to trim off 1-2 inches of split ends. Stylists can make us feel like we are ignorant to cover their own ignorance on how to do what we ask. Now you know better and will know how to respond quickly . You motivate me. I cannot wait to see you wow us with your progress. Natural hair responds to gentle care just like relaxed hair and the results will amaze you.
I appreciate what you said about everything being a social construct, especial ideal beauty standards! You get it. Relaxed or natural, you’ve made an impact just by sharing your story. I’m sorry to hear about your experience working with a certain brand. I’ve always said there’s a HUGE difference between a stylist and a hair care specialist. Yes, you can be both - but that’s rare and THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. Achieving certain styles should not come at the cost of healthy hair and no one should ever make you feel otherwise.
I’m very interested in behavior psychology aswell girl I just realized like a month ago I’ve been believing other people opinions of beauty all my life and that shit hit me in the face like what else have I been blindly believing
My hair is too difficult I'll never wear it natural again! I love that you are bringing representation of both relaxed and natural hair. It's time for natural sisters now! Either way I'm still with you in this Journey Seun❤
This is awesome!!! Like you, I went natural after being relaxed my whole like without seeing my natural hair (I'm 35). I never liked my relaxed hair but felt like I had to. It wasn't as successful as yours, I could not grow it at all, and it was breaking excessively. I was also having really bad scalp issues. When I stopped relaxing, all my problems went away. And the growth, is crazy!!!! I didn't know my hair could grow. Again congratulations on your big chop. I'm a new subscriber, and can't wait to see your journey (since I just did the same 6 months ago).
We stopped relaxing around the same time. I didn't want to go natural but CXC stress (really important high school exams that determine if you make it in life for those of you not from the Caribbean) as making my hair break really really bad like it was breaking at my new growth in clumps. So I was like I plan to go natural some day so I might as well cut it off and do it now. So in September 2019 I cut off all my hair, it couldn't twist properly lol it would unravel. Now it is about 1/2inch longer than Seun's. I am really enjoying being natural though. I lovveeeee itttttttt
