Following Seun's protective styling regimen has allowed me to retain 12" of new growth from quarantine era to now. It feels so affirming to watch her chop her hair and re-grow it and take us on her journey 🥰

What is Seun’s protective styling Regimen? Could you explain it please or tell me the title of the video, I’d love to try it 😊

@@naturalglory6311 My hair maintenance routine is as follows, I learned all of this from watching Seun's videos but tailored them for my hair type: Products: Cantu Root Rinse. tea tree oil, lightweight oil of your choice, 2 spray bottles, cloth head wrap, satin head wrap, Nairobi mouse (I avoid putting any products on the actual hair itself unless it is the Nairobi hair foaming mouse or mixing a nice smelling leave-in conditioner with water. Too much water on the hair will cause your real hair to pull out of the braid., so if you need a freshener MIST your hair with leave in + water Hair type: High porosity, dense, thin, type 4 hair 1) whenever you are active/sweaty be sure to cleanse your SCALP after each workout/days when you sweat a lot. (I generally prefer doing this in the night time so you don't have your hair frizzy in the daytime) 2) After your shower ( after b/c you still sweat under your shower cap sometimes) mist your hair with a water spray bottle- try to mist the scalp area and not the hair itself, do not over saturate the scalp with a a lot of water 3) In a spray bottle, mix the cantu root rinse with water and tea tree oil. If the spray bottle is 8 oz. then use 3-4 oz of the root rinse and dilute it with water and add 10 drops of tea trea oil or whatever amount of smell from the tea tree oil you can tolerate. The product smell mixes well with the tea tree oil 😁 4) Spray the cantu root mix directly on your scalp. DO NOT SCRATCH THE SCALP. Simply let it soak under the braid. You should feel an intense tingle similar to head and shoulders 5) Once the solution has dried (typically 5-10 minutes) Spray the scalp area with water, let it air dry for a few minutes and then wrap your hair with a cloth head wrap so that it sets/reduces frizzing 6) Before you go to sleep (hopefully your scalp is dry by then) use a lightweight oil of your choice and put it around your edge area and the back of your neck. Wrap the hair in satin. I say grease the edges because the bonnet/scarf is typically tightest around the edges of your hair so the oil prevents any irritation and allows your edges to slip past the scarf/bonnet. (Seun mentioned this in one of her videos) 7) Oiling the scalp is not necessary every single day, just do this when you notice your scalp is SUPER dry, avoid using thick creams on the scalp. It is not necessary and it will cause buildup. 8) Keep your styles in for 3 months minimum. It does not make sense to manipulate the hair so much and only keep them in for 1-2 months. 9) To extend hair life, wash your protective style once a month and secure the tops with rubber bands (assuming you have a lot of new growth). I watched Seun Okimi's videos on how to wash box braids- I recommend that as well as her whole channel on hair growth. 10) physical activity boosts hair growth!!!! without being active, hair grows 1/2 an inch per month. When I was active it as at 1- 1.25 inch per month, when I was inactive it as .5- .75 inches per month Use this regimen for any protective style, I currently have in spring twists/locs with no extensions and I still use this regimen. Recently I got a bad reaction to aloe vera which caused me to flake up so I made a stronger root rinse solution and I use anti-fungal shampoo to get rid of it. Your scalp health is far more important then your hair. If you get psoriasis or dandruff often, make a stronger solution or mix anti-dandruff shampoo with water and tea tree oil and put in a spray bottle-but remember to use a lot of water to get it out of your scalp. This helped me retain 9"-12"" of growth throughout my hair in 1 year. I chopped my dead ends and took a 4 month break from wearing extensions. I do think it's healthy to give your hair a break after wearing extensions. I give my hair 3 weeks before its back in another style,

@@Jasmine-uu2xo Omg thank you so much. It’s so detailed 🤩💕 I have low/medium porosity, thin/fine type 4 hair that is medium density but I’ll use a lot of the same ideas as you and Seun. I have a few questions to ask, hope it’s okay 🥺 Do you use this routine for only braids styles or also on cornrow styles for weaves/wigs? Also what kind of exercise do you do to keep fit that has helped your hair grow and how long do you exercise for each day/week? So do you wash your hair after every workout? My hair gets frizzy really quickly especially if I wash, could I reduce the amount I have to wash my if i do low impact exercise where I don’t sweat? And what is your diet like? What leave in conditioner and grease do you use? The biggest problem I have is breakage because my hair strands are thin. Do you have any suggestions for how to reduce breakage? I’ve managed to reach bra strap length but it’s taken like 6 years because of the amount of breakage I get even though I’m gentle with my hair 😩 My current routine is to shampoo and deep condition my hair every weekend. I wash my hair in 6 twist sections, no pre poo detangling, no detangling while shampooing or with deep conditioner. When I get out the shower I detangle each section one at a time with leave in conditioner and Shea butter then put my each twist section into a braid so I end up with 6 braids that I leave like that for the whole week and I put a wig on if I’m going out. I’m putting my hair in braids tomorrow and it’s it’s my time after 1 year but I’m excited to start my protective style journey to see how much length I retain. Thank you again for your reply 😊

Aw, That makes me really happy to know!!!!❤️ I love how much you've written out! I agree! And I love 2-3 month styles as well! When its a more intricate style that I only leave in for a few weeks, that's when I find that it starts becoming more manipulation to put in and take down those types of styles so often. I also talk more about protective styling in the second half of this video @NaturalGlory, and a more in this video as well!! : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-prk3NpC6yqI.html

tragic that hairdressers do this to us.....it was only when I went to non-black hairstylists that I realised how rough we are on your hair and scalps. I have a Polynesian/Maori stylist now for 6 years. He never damages my hair and he always cuts it in a style that I can manage and feel confident in. My trichologists are black and mixed race. While they never damage my hair, soothe my scalp and help my hair to grow, I find that sometimes they cut it into a style that I can't manage when I get home. They can be a little rough but not that crazy kind of rip out hair rough!

After deep conditioning is complete, I detangle each section while the conditioner is still on. I retwist each section. I rinse while in section. I then add my leave in to each section on soaking wet hair. For me slip and keeping hair moist while working with it made all the difference. I don't even understand the concept of detangling the hair with A BRUSH. like, before youtube, I never even seen it, nobody ever in my country does that. I tried it, my mom tried it, my friend tried it. the brush can oy go with your hair if it's already detagled, like, if the tangles are there, how is the brush even getting in?????? if it's already difficult for the comb to get through the hair, imagine a brush which is basically a bunch on combs at once lol. it only makes everything super difficult and it immediately breaks the hair strands, even if you start with the very end, like 3cm. I really can't even imagine how people can think of putting a whole brush into their hair if it's tangled up like, how??? and why??? lol I know it's soundibg crazy for lots of yall but honestly, that is so weird to me

Yo 1:46 triggered me. Aww hell no. Lol! How I detangle my hair every week: 1. take down the style and remove any shed hairs that I can feel. 2. apply pre-poo let it sit for 30 minutes under 3. Use a wide-toothed seamless comb before wetting my hair. 4. After shampoo and deep conditioning, I detangle damp (not wet or dry) hair in one-inch sections with a leave-in detangler, leave-in conditioner and a medium-toothed seamless comb. 5. every 6 weeks I use a detangling brush such as the tangle teezer. I have ultra-fine ultra-kinky/coily hair. I lose less hair this way and I get less knots and tangles this way. I can't finger detangle only because my hair is so fine I can't feel all the strands so I end up leaving shed hairs which leads to more knots and tangles. I don't detangle wet hair because that is when my hair is the most fragile. I don't do long term protective styles anymore. 7-10 days and then I take it down detangle, shampoo and deep condition.

This and a couple other things has seen me retain the 0.5 inches my hair grows a month (average) for the first time in my life and I'm not even consistently eating healthy. I have no doubt I can grow long hair now. So I hope this helps my 4c sisters. But whenever I do my hair (I usually keep protective styles in for a month) I make sure it's a chill day I have movie marathons and put on music and podcasts. I have it set in my calendar and I relax and clear the weekend. I don't wait to have to rush and get stressed. Then I end up fighting for my life with detangling. Ultimately being too rough and doing more damage than good. I'm a 4c girl and I'm a big believer in finger detangling with lubrication. When I use a fine tooth comb after just to see if its detangles it doesn't snag/pull out hairs so I know I can detangle effectively with my fingers alone. I also wash in twists most of the time (big or small). When I just wash my hair all together it definitely creates so many knots all my strands start scrapping with each other under the shower. Washing in twists alone solved half my detangling problems.

I think how long you keep water running over your hair play a big part in that, I'm going to try using less shampoo, it's taking forever to rinse it all out.

They are not the same and can lead to damage if used incorrectly. The instructions are on Aphogee's website. I find that my hair forms tiny tiny knots if I try to detangle it when its not dripping wet. @marleyhill34
@marleyhill34 2 года назад
@@saleca3613 I detangle my hair weekly and I get it trim every 12 weeks. My hair is 4c very tight tiny pen spring coils. I also keep it organised, moisturised and stretched. If I leave my hair in braids for 12 weeks, my hair will dry out too much and have too much shed hair to be removed. Once my hair gets single strand knot the only way to get rid of it is to cut it out. I can't comb it out. Sometimes those single strand knots take other HEALTHY NON-SHED hair with it!! That is annoying for sure. So keeping my hair stretched, moisturised detangled trimmed regulary keeps those knots to a minimum. Most people with curly hair have them because the hair likes to curl back on itself and then lock into place. To never have them you would need straight hair.

Get a full blood panel done. I discovered that my hair is actually genetically weak due to me being a Thalessemia carrier. It affects your iron and your blood....two things that you need to build strong hair. Also re-visit your styling techniques and hair care. My hair is very dry. If I don't moisturise it daily and deep condition it weekly it will break. I mainly wear my hair in twists, flat twists or two or three french braids. If I want to change the style I might wear a hair piece one week, a faux puff the next week and a week the next week. I do not wear any other styles regularly because of the tension on my ultra-fine strands. exercising and scalp massage also helps. Any illness like Covid or something hormonal like pregnacy/menopause will affect your hair. You can take hair vitamins too.

@megriorso4516
@megriorso4516 2 года назад
I don't know if it's been mentioned in this video but I recently learned a good way to take down braids and twist with minimal breakage. 1) Spray hair liberally with water. 2) Take a good leave in conditioner that gives slip and detangles knots (maybe a wash out conditioner if you intend to wash the hair soon after). Apply it to the strands, focusing on the beginning of the braid at the roots (that part that usually clumps up with dirt) and the ends where you will begin to loosen the braid. 3) Leave it for a few minutes to soak in and loosen the clump. 4) Begin to loosen hair, I recommend finger detangling. Reapply water and conditioner as needed. 5) When done with a section, add water and leave in again and lightly finger detangle, just enough to pin it up or put it in big braids or twists or fully detangle at this point if you don't intend to do it during the wash).

As Shamrock said.......Spraying with water first causes some people's hair to matte instantly because the cuticle swells up and locks the knot/tangle in place. A leave in detangler is safer. Some leave in conditioners do not have any slip. The rest is good advice.

FACT: AFRICAN KINKY HAIR WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE COMBED.
@iateyursandwiches
@iateyursandwiches 2 года назад
Eh, its a balance. It wasnt meant to be combed/brushed everyday unlike striaght hair where the increased blood circulation from brushing actually has a net benefit for the growth because they dont have the kinks that prones the ends to breakage. Its a net negative for our hair since the amount of breakage we would experience over rides tbe growth from the scalp and as Sheun said, sometimes exceeds it. If you want locs, then you're right. If you want to style the hair in the many protective styles our ancestors have done traditionally and our hair is capable, you have to smooth it with tools occaisonally. TL;DR: our hair can be combed(and should be if goal is to keep it loose) but certainly wasnt meant to be combed frequently and by extension, washed frequently(glares at an idiot named Onision)

My hair is super soft and I noticed when every time I’m detangling my hair out my hair breaks a lot there is a lot of breakage and every time I wash my hair which, is like every three or four weeks, I always deep condition because that’s what some of these RU-vid videos always says. So I follow especially because I have low porosity hair, but you said we should use more protein treatment if that was the case, but I was told that putting protein on low porosity hair is really bad because it causes protein overload, so should I still do that?
