WATCH PART 2! Updated for 2021: • Video
This is my approach to home cinema. In this video, I detail how I achieve a cinema like experience, while working within a middle class budget, in a non dedicated room. I have a hobby level interest on the subject and hope that my video can help inspire others to find innovative ways to create a similar entertainment experience, in less than ideal home theater budgets/environments. The equipment in this video includes: The Onkyo TX NR757 A/V Receiver, The OPPO UDP-203 Ultra Blu-Ray Player, the SONY BDP S6700 Blu-Ray player, and the SONY VPL HW45ES home cinema projector. I discus 7.2 digital surround sound, room environment, light control, electric automatic projection screens, aspect ratios and screen masking, projection technology, and digital cinema initiative standards for cinematic style home implementation. • Big Cinema Style Home ...

Thanks for sharing your setup. Helps us with improving our ideas. I recommend to get yourself another subwoofer for the other side. You'll be amazed of how much better your room will sound no matter where you're sitting. It happened to me.

I would actually like to do that at some point, the layout isn’t ideal though. I can’t really find the space with the hallway and kitchen in proximity. When I get around to it, I’m planning on replacing the height channels with ATMOS in ceiling overheads. Someone mentioned Polk Audio would be a good way to go. Also want to do some acoustic treatments and maybe even build out an acoustically transparent screen. 👍

@@3IFMMedia That will be exciting to change your speakers to atmos. I was wanting to get that installed as well. Please let us know when you get it and how much of a difference it will sound. These home theater systems are such a joy in our lives.

Nice set up.I would ad some kind of plexaglass or something where your projector is to really give it that theater look.

Thanks! I really wanted a fully enclosed booth like that but the open window functions as a part of my cooling system. There are fans in the booth that draw air in through the window and out the rear of the cabinet. I chose to do it that way instead of running more complex (and expensive) duct work to the building exterior.

Thanks D! I’ve always been really happy with the return on a fairly modest monetary investment. The worst parts were probably crawling around in the attic and being sort of a contortionist in getting all of the components installed in the top of the pantry. ....TOTALLY worth it though.

Instead of masking, on my retractable screen, for 2.40 movies I just point the PJ up to move the top black bar above the screen, then retract the screen a bit so the bottom bar is no longer on the screen. No need for masking bc you can make the screen any aspect ratio you want. Helps too that the screen is 2 feet from the wall, so any light from the back bars lands on a different plane and is blocked by the screen. Had to add a line of black tape across the bottom of the housing, to frame in the top though, bc you lose the top black frame bc it gets rolled into the housing. Works great and give you a perfect black framed 2.40 screen!

Sounds like a good solution! For me, it wouldn't be practical to reposition the projector on my setup. I've been thinking a great deal lately, about constructing an acoustically transparent screen, with a mechanized masking system. That's a pretty big investment however, for a room such as mine, that isn't dedicated.
@DarthHater100
@DarthHater100 5 лет назад
@@3IFMMedia It's not bad on mine as I have the PJ mounted, and the screws for roll/pitch/yaw are just tight enough that you can squeeze the PJ into any position or angle and it'll stay till you move it back. Wish I had lens shift, which will do it automatically. It's not too much of a pain, and to make it even easier, I just watch several movies in one aspect ratio in a row and then switch to the other position for another string of same-aspect-ratio movies. I'm not sure the details, but I've heard people on one of the home theater Facebook groups talk about re-purposing their retractable screen's mechanism and screen-material for doing auto-masking on their new fixed screen. Might want to keep it around as a way of moving the masking somehow.
@3IFMMedia
@3IFMMedia 5 лет назад
@@DarthHater100 Yes!!! That's EXACTLY what I had in mind, was ultimately re-purposing the mechanism. I guess wood framing and nylon material is the way to go for the screen, when you want to hide the front speaker bank behind it. One of my other viewers also has me thinking about installing some in-ceiling Polk Audio speakers for the ATMOS channels too.
@DarthHater100

@@3IFMMedia Nice! I just added two speakers above the couch for a 7.2.2 setup. Fun going back to all the movies I have with Atmos tracks and plus DTS Neural X it does a really good job too. Especially for movies with dynamic sound mixes. I haven't tried front heights like you have, but I think to get the best Atmos effect, having two top/ceiling speakers mid-room or four speakers centered around mid-room would give the best effect and best fits how the Atmos track was mixed. I had some small speakers with some wall mounts which only required two small screw holes and I just mounted them to the ceiling. I can't cut 8 inch holes in my rental lol but two screw holes is okay. Got some fish tape and put the wires thru the attic and it looks decent, plus the speakers have proper cabinets. Definitely a fun upgrade!

Very nice setup. How high is the projector from the floor? Since you have the ceiling access with the plates wired, you should try your height/Atmos channels up in the ceiling the way Dolby recommends. It makes a big difference in sound since the Atmos channels should be placed closer to the listener above your head. You can also use inexpensive round ceiling speakers and they would be flush mounted. I use the Polk Audio RC80i and they sound excellent and have aimable tweeters. Very nice work hiding all your cables.
@3IFMMedia
@3IFMMedia 6 лет назад
Thanks! The lens is just over six and-a-half feet up (about 6'7"). I really like your idea, I looked at a pair of the Polk Audio speakers you've mentioned, they seem very reasonable for what will probably be a significant sound field improvement. That's what I'm all about, small, affordable improvements that make a big impact.

3IFM - Oh and umm.. Why dont you use your projector for everyday TV viewing? I have an Epson 3500 projector and a diy 130 inch grey screen in my family room that replaced my TV almost 3 years ago. We use it for everything from Directv to Netflix and PS4 gaming. Its great.
@3IFMMedia
@3IFMMedia 6 лет назад
I do occasionally game with it but I’m really into making feature films sort of a special occasion for family movie nights. I feel like we’re always looking at it, it kind of takes away from the significance. A bonus is that there’s less wear on the SXRD panels and lamp.
@betitos007
@betitos007 6 лет назад
3IFM - Yeah, I decided before buying my Epson that it was going to be for everyday use. We are all used to it and i dont see it worth it spending $500 on a 55" TV when i can pay about the same for a decent projector and have at least 100 inches of screen. Keep us posted of any updates to your theater 👍

I ran a standard electrical outlet into the cabinet so the equipment simply plugs in to a surge protector power strip, especially rated for home theater equipment. Beyond that, I installed a gold plated 7.1 surround sound connector plate, with standard in-wall speaker wire, running through the attic. Thanks for watching!

The fire extinguisher demonstrates his trust in his makeshift cooling fan system😂😂😂👍🏻. Doesn’t the tv cover some of the projected image?
@3IFMMedia
@3IFMMedia 5 лет назад
LOL! I'll have you know, that is state-of-the-art $15 desk fan, which has been expertly installed on the side of my AVR, with only the finest double sided tape. At 27:39 you can see how the TV shadow affects a 16:9 image. For some reason, no one ever seems to notice it. It barley interferes with a 2.40:1 aspect (or other WS formats) at all. I simply ran out of room and had to make a small compromise there. If it ever annoys me enough, I'll change it.

You can get height channels on a 7.1 without atmos
@3IFMMedia
@3IFMMedia 6 лет назад
True! Yep, my installation isn’t even exactly right for Atmos here, that’s because I originally ran them as PL2Z. One of my other viewers suggested I bring the highs back into the overhead ceiling, which I think I might actually do. 🙂
@Test-Pilot1194
@Test-Pilot1194 5 лет назад
You need over heads (in/on ceiling) for atmos, front/rear height at least. I’m not sure this....works...

Didn't know long lengths of HDMI had signal loss. What does "signal loss" mean?? I run a 75 foot HDMI cable and it looks fine. Why would they sell 75 foot cables if they didn't work??
@3IFMMedia
@3IFMMedia 5 лет назад
It may or may not be a big deal. For the most part, if you're happy that there isn't any picture or sound degradation, you're good to go. You may not be aware of it, unless you've sampled your picture/sound over a shorter run. I've never attempted a longer run myself as I was able to find a good alternative. If nothing else, I know the longer (quality) HDMI cables are exponentially more expensive. As for the theoretical signal loss, it's pretty complicated stuff but this short article explains it all pretty well, I think: www.cables.com/blog/how-far-can-hdmi-cable-be-run-while-still-maintaining-high-quality/
@Test-Pilot1194
@Test-Pilot1194 5 лет назад
DarthHater100 the trouble is, the longer you want to run an HDMI CABLE, the more ....power as such, it requires from the HDMI OUT on the AVR , and trust me, if your hdmi our can’t handle it, it will just pop. There are a couple of videos on RU-vid regarding this matter. Always run an hdmi as short as possible. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

My room is a finished basement. It's 14.5 feet wide and 33 feet long. The problem is it's already a completely finished room with nice moldings, carpets ceiling fan ect. I wish it wasn't already finished as this makes it so much harder and I feel that I am working with its current design instead of what I truly want my theater to look like. My plan is currently a 130 inch screen with a 4k projector and 2 rows of 4 theater seating with a bar and 4 bar stools behind the second row. The second row will be on a 6-8 inch riser. I have a molding at my ceiling line that is already perfect to put some colored rope led lighting. I had a very simple painted 150 inch wall and $700 projector plus $300 stereo set up at my previous house. Honestly for being less than $1500 it was pretty awesome. I ran it for 10 years only replacing bulbs. But...This time I want a room that really looks close to a theater room. The hardest part seems to be the in wall sound system, as I have zero experience with this
@3IFMMedia
@3IFMMedia 5 лет назад
The room dimensions sound perfect! It's a shame it's not a completely blank canvas but id kill to have a dedicated room like that. The cool thing is, your theater will be (hopefully) entertaining you for years and that gives your skills/experience a chance to catch up as it evolves. In the mean-time, you'll get to enjoy 130 4K front projection, which will almost ruin the experience of actually going to the movies for you. Even my "2K" screen has better contrast and clarity to me than my local cinema seems to. With a room like that, I'd personally, want to experiment with an acoustically transparent screen and some nice fronts. At a minimum, you can try using some low cost fabric panels for sound treatment on the bare walls. Check around RU-vid for in-wall speaker installation. There's lots out there. ...oh yeah, I would sure like to see you progress, if you don't mind sharing.
