Stuart Adamson always has lyrics that have impact. In this song, the lyric "I could walk a 1000 miles tonight and never find my place...at least until it gets too light to hide my tearful face." This is powerful poetry folks. If I were an English teacher in high schoole or college, I'd make my students study this poetry over most the crap I had to study has a kid.
Miss you, love you, adore you, only wish I'd known you. RIP Stuart My father who was a lifelong musician unexpectly passed away just 2 months ago, 5 days after being diagnosed with bladder cancer so Stuart, if in the afterlife you meet my Dad you guys will have a lot in common to talk about & do some major jamming tunes. Love you Dad & Stuart
Stuart was a genius; saw BC over 70* times; he never remembered me; i'm ok with that....found it hard to talk at times; he'd put me at ease.....just soo friggin' grateful for what he/they left!.....and Tony,Bruce and Mark; all in their own way have/will, still help us to never forget! In their own way..whatever they do.....i doubt Stuart will ever be forgotten! For as long as they survive; pretty darn sure they'll be 'nods' to Stuart in whatever form; a lasting impression on all of us!
I am so glad my father introduced me to this band when I was younger, I'm only 19 and I think I'm the only one my age that truly appreciates this band.
This is another great song from Stuart and the lads. The CD "Driving to Damascus"is great. This band should have enjoyed a higher level of recognition, especially in North America. But it is good to see that so many people do care about this band and remember Stuart with love and respect.
Stuart you are still missed and always will be. You were loved by many, even though you probably didn't believe it. Thanks for sharing your gifts with the world, you deserved a kinder fate. 😢 x
I've never seen this video and yet it's everything I imagined, a Scot alone in a diner in America, the utter loneliness of missing a connection, oceans apart. I feel it strongly resonates imagery from Shattered Cross as well; the man in black, the woman in red, I have a music video in my head for that too, and it looks a lot like this, especially the figure alone on the road, the dusts in the air, that sense of futility... Fragility. Life and love both. I'm incredibly disappointed that for whatever reason they cut the verse including the line "all I ever wanted, was to be that hero too" in part because it resonates so strongly with me personally, but also because I think it's a very telling truth he immortalised in song. I think if he'd realised he *was* a hero, how many people's lives he'd changed, he could have returned to Scotland, to a hero's welcome. We shouldn't erase that, I think. But what do I know? I'm a lost Scots poet myself and I just feel strongly about certain words and phrases sometimes and today it was that one. His words affected me and every piece of poetry from me will continue his legacy in the only way I can. I wouldn't be the writer I am today without his poetry saving the days, and getting me through "a lot of cold nights, missing..."
Beautiful writing. He is sorely missed and elsewhere I have said to others that we need to celebrate what he did create and was released. Now though I acknowledge that grieving is an individual journey. Yet, his empathy, humanism, and connection to others in his lyricism haunts me too. I feel for all who were touched by the Big Man with a heart as big as the world, a heart that bled for this world, too.
@@frankstared I honestly don't think a day goes by that my own thoughts or writing don't turn to his poetry for inspiration, for empathy, for understanding. I think he had a great depth of insight into the soul, and that's why his works are so enduring, and so haunting. Have you come across these interpretations? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mFqIm7s6BpM.html There's another video linked in the description with a commentary on the thoughts behind the cover, and this one, I was listening to again today: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UOOrUngbayM.html It's not just Stuarts own voice that resonates, but the lyrics and the meanings and emotions he conveyed. I feel like the covers by this channel and Karine Polewart on the Scottish Songbook add a mark of respect to what Stuart was gifting us. I guess that's the probelm with having "a heart as big as a mountain" it can contain so many caverns, and so much darkness too. I hope he knew how much he gave while he was here, now just how much felt taken from him, in the end.
@@AnFithich Great response. I prefer the former interpretation of perhaps one of my favourite BC tunes to the later. However, as you say, great art inspires us in countless ways-many and most of them not immediately obvious. I can truly say that BC, and in particular Stu's tremulous lyricism, was integral to my own validation at a time when I had few admirable role models. My formative early teen years were spent replaying 'The Crossing', 'Wonderland EP' and 'Steeltown', on cassette tapes, tapes I repeatedly repaired. In terms of the darkness he carried, I can speak to you about my own intuitions concerning that but I would prefer not to do so here as I would not wish to alienate others. He most certainly knew about the way he touched others and I feel, while he cherished that, what he held onto consumed him. Might you know where the original CountryClub BC fan club forum is? I posted there when I found out about his death but have been unable to locate the original forum. Regardless, rest assured that his words and songs will always be woven into my own fiber...and I would have it no other way.
There was a reason for that. According to Classic Rock: "Fragile Thing was A-listed at Radio 2 and the single looked a dead cert to make the top 40 until chart regulators CIN decided that the ‘pizza box’ packaging of the CD2 single had one too many folds in it. Sales would therefore not be eligible." Basically it sounds like sales were sabotaged due to some petty technicality. Here's a link to the full article if you're interested. I wouldn't say I agree with all of it, such as the opinion about The Seer album (my personal favourite), but nevertheless it's an interesting read. www.loudersound.com/features/the-life-and-hard-times-of-big-country-and-stuart-adamson
@@brianbigcountry I still play mine very often as well . Great album ☺️ so many years after The Crossing creates DTD. In between, only two or three indifferent songs.
@@speleokeir cheers for the share. I was very interested in reading it since I was just at the Drake Motel in Nashville to walk where Stuart walked. Sounds crazy, but I could feel his spirit there.
This is a great song but the video makes me sad given what hapened to Stuart. The older I get the more I love Big Country. They were, and indeed are, magnificent.
yup, she did backing vocals on a few of the tracks on the Album Driving to Damascus. and she is in good company, the last guest vocalist on a song of theirs was Kate Bush on The Seer, from the Album the Seer.
Big Country at their best. Loved them and miss them hugely. Deserved so much more recognition. If only Stuart knew how much we cared. Rest in Peace mate.
Eerily awesome-RIP Stuart. You are missed by too many; you departed far too so 'on. The World morns a great musician whose songs saved many while he distroyed himself because he was human; Rest Peacefully in the arms of the Universe. Kristi Potohnik
Wow. That song is so haunting and wonderful, but I'd never seen the video before. Didn't even know there was one. I can't believe Stuart is gone. I was lucky to see the band live 5 times. Totally underrated group. Oh, Stuart why did you leave us? Thank you for posting this video.
@TRANExWRECK I got my kids into them too, and they are 20, 17 and 15!! They were brought up listening to them lol Stunning lyrics, and a voice no-one can rival.
Saw BC in Phoenix Park opening for U2. they were GREAT then and still are. I also saw them touring BUFFALO SKINNERS at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ. Another great show. Started listening to them alot in the past three months. I guess my ex-girlfriend triggered it. this song really tears me up ....
absolutely brilliant! Was lucky enough to see BC several times between 85 & 99. The best live band I've ever seen. God bless Stuart and the chaps for the magical music they gave us over the years.
Stuart, you were the best! Stuart was the best Singer, and songwriter! This song was a great song among many of his songs. Stuart, you are missed dearly!
I’d given anything to have been there for him. His music was there for me so many times. I miss my friend...one day I hope to meet you, Stu. You were my friend of the heart.
we had a vote at work about the best band ever... we're talking about the length of the UK with a variety of peoples picking it... Big Country won by a mile... is it any wonder when songs like this that touch the heart and bring a tear to the eye are so beautiful...
I love the song and enjoyed many of the comments. Many of you spoke very elegantly about Stuart. I wish I could too. I trust that I won't, so I'll be overly wordy and not as effective in what I'm trying to say instead. He was a bard and troubadour. His music and words always inspired and moved me. I am saddened by the depth of his sorrow. I wish there had been a way for him to get help. The ironic thing is that many of his songs speak of hard times but they often had a spirit of a good battle against those hard times and inspired me in my own life. This song has a deep sadness, but was blended so well with lyric and music that it is a truly artistic and a piece to be admired. Eddie Reader's vocals add a great deal. The whole band are insanely talented and use their talent in a way that always serves the song more than their own glory or vanity.
How sweet! Very kind of you indeed Daniel. I am actually researching for a book about the 4 lads. April 11th should be 'Stuart Adamson Day' in Crossgates...dontcha think?
Sleep well Stuart. I first knew of you and Big Country back in 1997. You rock my friend and left your footprint on earth. Love you lots and will always listen to your stuff. Happy dreams.
In this video, Stuart resembles actor Ray Liotta a bit facially. Seldom does a day pass in which I lament his passing. .especially in the manner that he left the earth. His brilliance as a songwriter and guitarist is unsurpassed and I'm thankful I got to see him and BC in better times. The mark of a great artist is how they effect the way you feel for years to come. To that end, Stuart Adamson accomplished that. He is truly missed.
Eddie Reader has the best Scottish female vocal that I have EVER heard. She is another lost talent, she should have been more recognised than she is. Big Country ROCK!!!!
1st saw big country in 85 now i got my 11 year old daughter listening to this song if possible she may love it more than me. if u love this have a listen to troubled man it might just break your heart though.
@TRANExWRECK your not the only one im 22 listened since the age of 7 there isnt bad song they did and stuart was just truly talented and will live in my memory forever
Many of Stuart Adamson's latter songs sound like they were inspired by his divorce, being separated from his wife and kids back in Scotland, while he was trying to reinvent himself in America. This one, 'too many ghosts' and 'shattered cross' especially. Turning to drink did him in. Driving to Damascus was his attempt to save the day.
So I just listened to this twice. This is my third listen: there is a verse missing here! I was singing along (can't help it, it's my favourite song in the world) 3rd (and best, IMHO) verse, is actually "I've been to see a movie About a man who saved the world Had the same old happy ending Where the hero gets the girl And all I ever wanted Was to be that hero, too And then I might still be with her Instead of here with you"
Same here! I'm on my third listen and searching the comments for lyrics to find out if this is a different version or what. Glad someone else out there noticed. Absolutely scandalous that they would edit his poetry like this, because it speaks volumes, and was the line in my head when I got the inclination to listen to it just now.
Stuart was Big Country, and will always be Big Country. I happen to be blessed, and know Shelli, Stuart's Beautiful daughter. I know this family! Stuart started Big Country, and Stuarts music will never die! Shelli's, hit's "Wonder" and "Here In The Dark" are beautiful songs. Stuart's music will live on and never die. Best singer and songwriter UK ever .
Was never a huge fan of Big Country's 90's stuff , but listening to this again just makes you realise they were still coming up with the odd great song , even if they were being largely ignored . I think this is probably Big Country's best video too
Passing through Nashville I stopped at the Drake to take a few pictures. I think I met the manager. “ Oh, you just want to park your car here? You don’t have any business here. You better leave. “. Nice people. I can see why the stars used to love it so much. Oh, well. Love the album version of the song I bet a C&W performer or group could have a big hit with this song.
This song is yet another example of Stuart's brilliance. The lyric "I could walk a thousand miles tonight and never find my place. At least until it gets to light to hide my tearful face."
Yes they were better.... Incredible that so many people have not listened to their greatness !!! I am glad I do.... Each and Every Day... RIP Stuart...
This song is definitely growing on me, Stuart's voice is gorgeous. At first I wasn't sure what to make of it compared to the first 3 or 4 studio albums and quite frankly if this wasn't Big Country I'd probably by pass it because it doesn't exactly do a whole a lot for me, but I also like this video because Stuart looks good n' healthy.
Manche gehen zu früh und keiner weiß es, aber der Verlust ist riesig. In stillem Gedenken an stuart. Ich hoffe da, wo du jetzt bist, gehts dir gut, wo immer das ist.
