This was the first wrestling match I ever saw. I was 8 and I don't think I'd even heard of pro wrestling before seeing this. I'd never seen anything like it before. I thought John Quinn looked quite the badass with his intro music. That's the thing I remember most about this, was him coming to the ring with 'The Mighty Quinn' playing. A few years later I moved to America and I saw plenty more wrestling matches, WCCW, WWF, etc... This will always be my first experience with pro wrestling so credit for that, but let's just say this match is not quite as gripping and intense and athletic as my 8 year old self thought it was!
Loved this farce every Saturday. Man mountain in the peak of form and condition encounters an ageing blob of jelly, and guess what? I presume this was a Cup Final special with a three month build up and a ninety second "fight" , that being about all the "victor's" heart could reasonably be expected to hold up to. Classic TV.
Every Saturday at four on World of Sport its wrestling a pure farce than their other coverages such tug o war, log throwing, ice speedway and log water championship.
People criticizesd big daddy for lack of wrestling skills but he put asses on seats and filled venues up and down the country because he could work a crowd ! Hulk hogan and the ultimate warrior in the US were exactly the same
All carefully choreographed by the promoters in order to spice up UK professional wrestling. Looking back now it's patently obvious. It even takes 5 minutes of filming with the hype for the wrestlers to get to the ring supported by their singalongs and 10 minutes for the timekeeper to ring the bell for round 1. With just 4 minutes for the rest of the bout.
10 minuets of bullshit, three minuets of 40 odd stone, being thrown at you, and amazing, Big Daddy wins!! I could never understand it way back when, looks even more silly now.
it was due to the Crabtree brothers virtually running UK wrestling at the time. Notice here that Brian Crabtree ( BD's Brother) is in Bd's corner and Quinn knocks him to the floor at 10.38. Daddy then does the "right mate, you've asked for it now" crap and hey presto, BD vanquishes the nasty North American thus reinforcing his image as the Great British heavyweight hero and Kids favourite. All scripted nonsense and more cash in the bank for the Crabtrees.
