Big Daddy is a big, rescue Sulcata tortoise. I've always tried to give him as much space as I possibly could, but it is time for him to get a big upgrade at Clint's Reptile Room!

Good pocket hole jointery, but it feels mildly unsettling to see only one fastener on the exterior framing joints/bracing. With substrate, it will weigh a fair bit, that extra rigidity from more than one fastener at those points would help deformation. I strongly suggest you use the Kreg wood plugs to seal the bottom holes with waterproof wood glue. Not super important with a relatively dry substrate but it's good form to keep crud out. That crud holds moisture against the pocket hole screw and increases the chance that the coating will fail and the faster head or shank will corrode.

It always makes me smile to see the dedication in people to go all out for their pets, and I'm the same way. I'm no carpenter. I'm more of a musician by trade, and a full time kennel attendant (best job ever working with animals). But when it comes to constructing bigger, better habitats for my own herps, I never disappoint!

Where did you get the roll of plastic sheeting! All i can find is the 8x4 sheets of fiberglass paneling but for years ive wanted something like the roll you have. Tip for more humid enclosures is the put a bead of silicone underneath your seams as well as on top.

For people that don't live in states/climates where outdoor living is capable, this type of build/enclosure is awesome. Both affordable & functional, plus it looks really cool & could be built to fit any room/area Indoors. Big Daddy is really going to enjoyed the new digs! Job well done ✅
@ciragoettig1229
@ciragoettig1229 6 месяцев назад
this is a tough one imho; it is indeed very heartwarming to see the frankly amazing dedication they gave to this animal under the circumstances, but really its near impossible to give a creature as giant as an adult sulcata enough space to keep it indoors, so you can't really actively *recommend* doing this, unless they too are taking care of such a creature through no fault of their own, or taking it out of even worse conditions. This creature needs even at minimum a basically apartment sized enclosure, and not anything that would possibly fit in a normal room. I was reading the housing standards of both germany and UK, and tortoises are particularly demanding of space for their size (and this is a very big one), as in both, they require a *minimum* of 8 plastron lengths times 4 plastron lengths for the enclosure of the tortoise, which is something like 23 sq.m (250 sq.ft.) for an adult male sulcata w a typical plastron length of ~85cm! Which I think is pretty much impossible to near anyone, except by being able to keep it outside. Its just simply not an animal a person should intentionally get unless they have such outside space and conditions, or idk a truly gigantic house to fit such an enclosure, and I believe Clint has said as much as well in other vids.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know, you and snake discovery have been such huge inspirations to me, and I am going to start my own reptile collection. I’m going to start with either a western hognose or a Bullsnake, and assuming I enjoy the experience, (I think I will) also on my list are a group of garters, a false water cobra, carpet python, rainbow boa, some sort of skink or gecko (probably both) and maybe a really big snake like a burm or a retake, and the list keeps growing the more of your videos I watch! Edit: also you probably shouldn’t be wearing a tie while you’re doing this. I know it’s just a drill, and you’ll probably be fine, but really for ANYTHING construction related you shouldn’t be wearing a tie.

I love the horizontal opening so that he can look out. 👍😊 I understand that this is still a work in progress. Each piece looks very good indeed. But that 90 degree angle looks like it needs at least one, or ideally, two more joining pieces on the bottom of the frame. You could use a triangular piece under the far corner 2x4s. And a trapazoidal piece under the near corner ones. Your new jig should make it possible without having to turn the whole thing on it's side. Just ask a carpenter. Also, he's going to get too heavy for you to lift and what if you want to let him onto the floor or you need to take him to the vet? Can you make it possible to lift one end out? Then you could attach a ramp when you need to. Or put him onto a wheeled cart. I hope you have a wonderful time up at the Build Off!

At 14:00, love the " here goes my sofa space." look. USA is truly full of gold. This enclosure if you build in cape town, will be like $300 labor and material included, maximum. I can get someone to build it with leftover shipping planks for $100, easy. $10000 u can build a 100sqm small holding structure for poor people to stay here. Must put some protection pads under the wheels for the wooden floor just my suggestion.

Awesome build. I foresee the gap being an issue, in my experience with box turtles they’re really strong for their size and love getting stuck places, sulcata mileage may vary. Hopefully not an issue and it works as built, but if it does become an issue, strips of acrylic or plexiglass should do the trick. I’d go with 1/4” thick myself, I’d rather overbuild than go too thin and need to redo it. It can be cut with a skil or jigsaw, edges sanded (probably should be rounded or beveled for tort safety), drilled (countersinking would be a good idea to keep everything flush, that’s very easy, you can probably just use a bigger bit you already have) and screwed in. 1/4” Sheets aren’t exactly cheap, but the strips only need to be a little wider than the gap so you can screw them in. You could make several strips from one sheet. Again, hope it’s not an issue, but the fix would only be a few hundred bucks at worst.

I love a good diy video. I've switched to those screw heads as well. No more stripped screws. I've started making enclosures just from sheet foam and "poor man's fiberglass". It's cheap, light and working really well. Wouldn't be ideal for a sulcata. You'd have to reinforce it or he'd do a Kool aid man impression, but it's great for most snakes and lizards.
