April's delivery of fresh snow in Dolomites - we are on the way to ski😊 From last fall when I visited this part of Dolomites I knew we need to come back in winter. So for the first day it was logical to start from Passo Pordoi and explore couloirs of the Sella massif. First on the list was Holzer couloir. Two skiers were in front of us. First part was not the best, we hoped for some better snow where couloir became narrow but it was the opposite. It turned to ice, strange for a north facing line after snowfall. But nothing wrong, turned around. Soon we were back on top of the line and traversing/ascending to the next couloir #1.
Starting from Col Turont (2927 m) descending through Col Anton couloir under Col Aut (2882 m). Upper part was great, humid powder, exit with some crust crossing avalanche debris. Lower down enjoying low angle spring powder skiing.
Next we went to Piz Beguz (2974 m) to check conditions of couloirs on this side. Big cornices on the ridge. We traverse to the Piz Miara (2964 m). Here only smaller cornices above line #2. I clip to the rope, dig through left side of cornice to get easier acces to the line and test the snow. Additionally also did a ski cut and few turns on belay. Everything ok, snow on the north side was amazing. We skied on the left side of couloir since it held deep powder snow. Exit of couloir over avalanched part and lower down enjoying humid powder in the sunshine. Since it was hot we soon turned around and did a fast ascend back to the top.
When ascending from #1 line to the #2 we spoted another great couloir from Col Turont (2927 m). #1 is SW direction but this #3 is north facing. So we traversed in beautifull views over Rifugio Boe to the line #3. To our surprise conditions were not so good as before under Miara + avalanched bottom part of the line. To exit a line there is a rappel into a cave - highlight of this line today. It was around 10-15 m most of that overhanging, not bad for my first winter rappel😅
As you could imagine not a lot of daylight left, so we decided to ski fast through Val Lasties under big walls of Sas de Pordoi (2950 m). We skied to the edge of asphalt road. But our car was on Passo Pordoi. So there is only one way. Headlamp on and easy walk. After an hour of walk first car goes in Pordoi direction. Lucky for us driver is also skitourer so we are soon on Pordoi. Thank you for a ride.
*the conditions were on the limit, it was simply to warm
