Funfact: Ultra Magnus's head does go somewhere! The front of the head crest acts as a slot that goes over a Tab in the chest piece to make a little drone! This was a gimmick leftover from diaclone."
His missile launchers also plug into the front of the trailer instead of the sides like we're used to seeing in most modern media. The trailer also had a base mode in Diaclone that was left out as well, the top ramp on the trailer is also intended for the jet that later became the Seekers.
Magnus enjoyer here, I think the problems with the missile launchers is that you somehow have two different variants, the commemorative ones have keyhole shaped holes, whereas the G1 originals had a circular hole Great vid, hope to see more G1 in the future, it’s got a certain goofy charm
he was always intended to be his own character, the toy is imported from japan where the character is just an armored up version of the character optimus prime was imported from.
@@amosquitofanatic4412 hmm perhaps I mixed it up and it was supposed to be him getting the matrix, but I don't really know. This is going off some vague memory of a thing I saw
In the original toy line, Diaclone, Powered Convoy was an upgraded form of Battle Convoy But when the toyline was imported to the US, Powered Convoy was rename as Ultra Magnus, it's own character
Just want to note two things.. UM was reissued twice. A quick way to tell is in the trailer hitch in the cab. The first reissue has the hitch as a solid peg with rounded tip, just like the original. The more recent one has a hole in the middle of the peg, as they used the mold from the Japanese exclusive G1 OP 2pack with deluxe movie OP with a trailer for the latter, which allows either prime to pull said trailer. This is the version that I personally own. If you can manage to find the short missiles for the original UM, you can hollow out the launcher holes making them round instead of T-shaped to allow it to fire the original short missiles. This I also did to my reissue UM.
You found a awesome classic . And talking about dumb, one section at TFcon had a ss86 swoop and changing him fo $160 dollars so much for getting the last Dinobot. But had a good haul.found a legacy Beachcomber, a good loose Ransack, ss86 Bumblebee, Clampdown Spinster and threezero robo-dou voltron. And got Stan Bush and Victor Caroli who's still got the vocal touch.
One of my old hot grails. I restored one out of a couple junker sets and have enough left over to build most of a plastic wheel version. Absolutely one of my favorite sets.
I purchased this new at TOYS ‘R’ US back in what ‘02 or’03? Anyway I’m not surprised that you had issues with the missle launcher. Mine suffered from QC issues as well. I don’t remember the rockets being long, but it has been years ago now. Anyway I ended up taking it back to the store. Maybe I just had bad luck with that reissue line, because it seems like they all had QC issues to some extent.
This is an amazing video and I’m happy you were able to find two grails so close together. 7:10 hightail creations made a custom missing link ultra Magnus trailer and I wonder how compatible g1 Magnus is with missing link prime
you can plug the combined mode head crest to the chest, making it look like a turret. also means you can store the head in truck mode. separating the chestplate makes both pieces become its own vehicle with its own seats
If I had a nickel for every time That Toy Guy had an Ultra Magnus with paint chipping on the chest, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
What makes me feel old is this toy is older now than G1 originals were at the time this reissue came out (16 years to 22 years). God, where did time go?
Transformers be like dominoes when you try to reach behind the smaller ones. I've had that happen enough times. For a rerelease this is a really good find, and definitely worth the pick up despite the shortened stacks, and lengthened missiles. Was really lucky in 2002 when I came across both Commemorative Prime, and Magnus at TRU for about 100 CND. Never made the size comparison between the SS Magnus, and original so never realized they were so close in size, Really wonder if it will be similar between the 86 SS Prime and original G1 Prime as respectably I always felt he was on the smaller side. Missing Link Magnus would be very impressive to see as that would need a complete trailer redesign.
Has someone who owns an original G1 ultra Magnus (Non reissue(it is one of my favorite toys of all time. I've had it since I was a kid I still love playing with it.
As someone who's never owned a ultra magnus what would be a good figure to get? Was tempted to get the shattered glass variant and recently I saw some 3rd party magnusus, it feels like magnus's molds always comes with with some weird caveat.
i dont know if you are aware, but you can put the head and chest parts together to make a little tank there is even a lttle seat for the little figure that would have come with the orignial daiclone version, its also a good place to store the head in vehicle mode.
You can plug the head onto the chest piece (in Diaclone, this created a mini flying thing, but it’s handy for vehicle mode storage). You can also plug the super mode fists onto the missile launchers in vehicle mode and put the normal fists in the truck cap. Really, the only thing that doesn’t have a place to go is one of the two pelvis pieces (I usually slot the spare into the space behind Magnus’ head in super mode). Got mine last week, it’s a Japanese G1 near complete with box and in great condition for $50. >:3 Buyee enables my addictionnnnn
I think core robot would just be missing link prime and besides adding shoulder joints the bottom half of the trailer would have to armor form/part form in order to have movable legs
Missing link magnus could use the energon optimus supreme combination method. Where you just shove the truck in and leave everything sticking out the back.
I wonder when will they do a reissue version of the Terrorcons because I have one of the G1 Terracons and I hope he will work with it. It’s g1 ripper snapper
i finally get money to spend on amazon, but I only have $40 and velocitron is $70, but laser optimus is $40. which one should I get? note: they are both on sale
the $40 was from a gift card. i had the money for the rest of it, but was wondering if i should use it for something else. anyways, velocitron will be here monday
I got him for Christmas way back in 86.....oh crap I just aged myself. 😅 Anyways, I still love this figure, and yes I still have the one I got for Christmas.
So theory here. I wonder if the extra crotch piece and the missile launcher that doesn't hold the missile come from an original 1986 Magnus that your seller just included?
