For me out of all these G1 Optimus the Missing Link is the one I'm most impressed with. I got the cartoon one a while back and I just love him so much.
I missed the decals on the inside of the trailer but the excitement when mine arrived just took over, it’s so beautiful. And the spring in the trailer, I started ranting at my 7yo - “Look, the spring actually works!!” So happy. More please, Hasbro.
Interesting that the launcher for roller actually travels the full distance. The original release had a stop that was added to the mold of international releases so it wouldn't propel Roller out so fast. Of course when I learned about this, I had to cut out the safety stop
This is so siiiick!! I have the Soundwave and Blaster to this and I’m still gushing over their cartoony colors. This version of Prime will do well in my collection. Just something about those clean matte cartoony colors that make these so fun!
Oh gosh I think seeing Roller spring out of the trailer alone has sold me on this 😂 Brilliant vid! I think it speaks to how timeless the G1 Prime figure and design is that even with tweaks here and there, it can still spark joy in those of us who had it when we were kids 😊
This is the first retro reissue release I'm skipping because I'm quite happy with the Missing Link version. But I do like that they went full toon with the deco on this. But those screw holes are a massive eyesore for me. I think they should have modified the design to hide those fasteners. Or just used a grey sticker for the stripe instead of paint and cover them up. One thing I'm confused about is that my original 1984 Prime toy when I was a kid did not have a functioning launcher. No idea why. I didn't even know it had the launcher until people started complaining when the ML version didn't have it. Maybe mine was broken and I never noticed?
I'm so glad this got long smokestacks. The notched, non-firing missiles make me wish they had done the same with the seekers to restore them to original length. I'd buy those over again to get them.
Very pleased to see the Roller launcher intact. Having acquired C-01 this year as my first taste of Battle Convoy, the absence of that little black chunk was my one mark against an overall excellent package. The dedication of Evan and the team on this release and the Retro G1 initiative as a whole really impresses. (Sunstreaker next please!)
Thus far, my favorite original G1 Prime is the Takara reissue from several years ago where they put tampograph shoulder insignias. Though I wish they had painted the silver on the cab instead of stickers. I do also have the Missing Link, which I consider is a separate thing. I do wish they'd do a cartoon type Bumblebee Missing Link where they put the newer head on.
@@SixoTF yeah I know, but I feel like the Missing Link anime edition would've ditched the chrome for white and painted the lights Infront yellow ya know 🤷
I still have the 20th Anniversary reissue I bought some 20 years (which came with a talking badge and a copy of the Marvel G1 comic issue 1), but this one would be a very nice version of the toy to get had I not gotten that previous one back then. A good one for anyone to get nowadays, even.
@@SixoTF It's mainly a budget and limitation thing I set for myself. If I do end up seeing it for cheaper somewhere, no doubt I'd be tempted enough to pick it up! Aha!
I hope these come back into stock sold out everywhere unless stock is still incoming? It looks amazing, I can’t wait to grab one if I can! Great review
I was gonna gripe about no rub sign and no chrome but since I have the Missing Link versions it doesnt bother me. Im just glad this 40th comes with a trailer with spring loaded trailer and missiles. I'm so game for this figure.
@@ravendarklawgaming197 I own the Original Optimus Prime toy and it’s complete with 2 of the 4 missiles still on the sprue and the other two are in the trailer in the launcher. It was my first Transformer toy and since then I’ve collected over 120 different Optimus Prime toys.
im really excited to hopefully get this guy, it’s been a great year for optimus primes with the 86 commander and the legacy deluxe and all that, but i haven’t been able to play with the g1 fella yet, barely seen him in person, and this looks like a really lovely version of him. might try and snag some reprolabels though, the trailer in particular feels incomplete without the nonsensical sci-fi detail inside or the blue and white stripe outside. still, he’s gonna be a great add to my collection.
I ordered this from Star Action Figures at the weekend and they sold out fast, never owned a Optimus Prime before but played with the figure round friends houses as a kid (But never the trailer, so learnt a few bits here). I didnt want the missing link figure as although its nice its not trully a vintage form and i wanted the style from the 80's even though its inferior, i dont care about articulation.
I specifically wanted this version and the recent Soundwave due to the beautiful retro packaging as had missed previous reissues and vintage originals are very expensive.
I wonder when they'll ever reissue the G1 Dinobots? It's been 30 years since the last time they did during G2. I remember passing on those G2 because I wanted to wait for the G1 colors, but that never happened. Just could buy a purple Grimlock.
Supposedly the moulds have been lost or damaged but with the new trailer here I would say anything is possible. I asked Evan about it and it definitely wasn’t a no so I wouldn’t be shocked! Oh, and they had the grey ones in G2 as well 😉
@@SixoTF I never saw the "grey ones" in G2. I really wanted Grimlock, but hated the purple color and waited and waited and eventually G2 left and then I regretted not getting Grimlock while I had the chance, even though he was purple instead of G1 colors.
Here's hoping for Galvatron, Cyclonus, Scourge, Shockwave and Ultra Magnus. Also, it would be funny if they retooled G1 Megs to be some weird tank or jet.
Shockwave will need to be licenced and that's assuming the mould still exists. G1 Megatron is a gun. I'm not interested in any weird retconning. Can't make it, don't make it
Got mine the other day too and I agree with pretty much everything you've said about it, it's just such a good everlasting toy that any reissue of it feels it great but this one is just a step above, despite the lack of chrome. Quick question, does your 2000 reissue have stickered or tampoed autobot symbols? I can't tell if that's just really nice sticker placement and there doesn't seem to be enough info that I can find online.
@@fritztopher I got mine from In Demand Toys but I did preorder it. Looks like its out of stock at most of the UK online retailers now. Probably will come up on Pulse or other US retailers fairly soon I would think.
The figure in the comparisons is a reissue, as clearly stated (though the vintage original is also featured at the start of the video). That said, the smokestacks haven’t been shortened for the reissue - that’s how they always were
@@RacoonCityPizza haha fair - it’s up on quite a few UK sites already. I see TFSource had it but it appears sold out already! Does seem to have not really landed in the US so far?
@@SixoTF Yeah I don't think it's in the US yet. I look forward to it though. I may use my spare KO trailer for stickers lol. Never applied that on there. Otherwise, this looks great. I'm a sucker for G1 Prime molds.
I searched online on Walmart’s website in Canada and it’s not there at all. I have a better chance at finding the Missing Link Convoy C-01. I think the OG toy visual has aged incredibly well despite being a “block”. Robots come in all shapes and forms and we either like one design or we don’t. Its simplicity has endured. And I say that as someone who has never seen the G1 in person. I’ll have the G1 Legacy release and maybe later I’ll get the Missing Link Convoy. I can only respect this release here for what it is because I personally prioritise articulation and engineering for the range of poseability.
Really enjoyed this fantastically thorough showing of Prime. I have never been more down with getting another Optimus trailer. Also really dig how the grey paint covers the section between the blue eyes, a nerdy detail to appreciate but it looks great on the anime Missing Link Prime and it looks great on this one too.
Someone below wrote "Optimus Prime lives!" Yes, he always lives. And, relives, and relives, and relives. Or, Bumblebee. Or, Blaster. Or, some version of Megatron that's not a realistic-looking gun. I have two of these reissues, a Hallmark ornament and several other toys called Optimus Prime that are trucks (and one is a Matchbox-style car). And, I know someone will write "well, don't buy it, then, hurrrrr." But, it's just a shame that, in 40 years, Transformers has become a commodity. The neat, new stuff takes 40 steps to change (and are more often than not the same cadre of the same dozen or so characters, as well), and the retro reissues are always Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Soundwave, Starscream, Blaster, yawn. Oh well, I hope those who buy this get enjoyment from it that lasts longer than the brief dopamine hit of forgetting you're middle aged now and not a kid.
I have the TRU version, cancelled the un trailered Missing Link , cancelled the MP toy version , I do have Nemesis Yolopark , haven’t made up my mind , too many . I do have SS pre ordered at bbts
I bought a G1 KO Optimus Prime recently, just to have a complete new one, since my old one was really enjoyed and toyed with. 2 days after I ordered it, this got announced… I guess my G1 OP mold is gonna be increasing more than expected
Every time i noticed someone post an Optimus Prime review, I will ask "How many Optimus Prime is enough?" Aren't you sick of it? Collectors are being slapped left, right and centre almost every year.
The cab mold is new too. Well, it was used in 2018. When Prime got an Asian exclusive reissue in 2012, that was the final use of the classic mold for cab and trailer. The thing literally fell apart. Great video BTW. Im not picking at you. Im a reissue nerd. Also the trailer has a slight angle when hitched to Optimus Prime. Im still getting one if I can find it and it's not expensive.
Thanks - I mention in the description but I asked Evan from Hasbro about the cab mould being “new” for the Walmart reissue and he doesn’t believe it to be the case.
There's very little I find awkward with this one. The stripe being done that way it is feels odd, but I get what they were going for. Everything else far outweighs that though. Looks spot on. They must have tweaked elements of that original mould somewhat. The fact folding the arms back is so smooth on this one suggests something was done. Millimetres shaved off somewhere. Or mould degradation just did us a solid. I need a new G1 prime soon. When I got the Missing Link one I noticed my childhood Prime has gained some new wear and tear. The seats inside the cab seem to be breaking. Part of one got in the way of the head being spun around. He's retired from transforming now. This one may be his successor in that regard.
Fair shout, I did consider it but I'd already spent a fair bit of time on the trailer as it was and the ML trailer is (at least visually) quite indistinguishable from the vintage version in many regards. I take your point though
Nicely done review! Hasbro has done a great job with this reissue. The cab used here is the same mold as the 2018 Walmart exclusive version which had all new tooling so in a sense is relatively new. Can't wait to get this!
So someone else mentioned this to me - it's a rumour I have heard before! I've dropped Evan from Hasbro a note to confirm either way bc of course I am intrigued now haha. And thanks!
So I had word back from Evan - he doesn't believe it to be the case. He says he didn't work on the Walmart Prime specifically (he did on the Devastator though) and he isn't aware of any new tooling happening for those reissues. He did add the caveat that it's possible it was newly tooled at some point prior to this and he just isn't aware of it, but apparently it's unlikely for this specific 2019 release.
@SixoTF Thanks for the info and reaching out to Evan. I thought it could of been since there is a trademark and date stamp on the back of the right shoulder that says "2018 Hasbro SA Tomy Vietnam". The original and concurrent reissues don't have trademark stamp on the cab but on trailer instead. Either way thanks for reading my responses.
@@SixoTF The Devastator was altered and all of the springs were removed from the forearms and Mixmaster’s body. So no shooting action with that reissue.
The cab is a new molding, it has copyright info on the inside of the arm and a few other differences, it’s the same mold as the Walmart reissue from a few years back. A great refresh of the mold, but that Walmart version had issues with standing due to the leg mechanism becoming wore down from transformations. I hope this new release doesn’t have the same issue
It doesn’t but also I included a note about the idea of this being a new mould in the video description, as I asked Evan from Hasbro about that specifically and he says he doesn’t believe it is. As far as he knows there were no new moulds used for the Walmart reissues (and he did work on the Devastator specifically).
@@SixoTF oh? That’s crazy to me, I’ll have to check again but I could have sworn the bumper was noticeably thicker , though I guess it could just be a variation thing 🤔
@@SixoTF I had assumed it was the same mold they used for the release with the legs that fit the movie prime trailer, though I never owned that release so I'm unsure
