Come with me to… Big Glace Bay Beach!
In 2023 I decided it would be fun to try to visit all the beaches on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. I read somewhere there are around 80. It might take me 5 years, 10 years, maybe longer. We shall see.
Today I visited Big Glace Bay Beach. Located 30-minutes from downtown Sydney, I was excited to visit this beach for the first time. The beach access road has a cute beach sign and is 600-meters long. Parking is single file on both sides of the road. This land received beach status in 1976 and is also a National Wildlife Area as of 2022, as well as a Migratory Bird Sanctuary.
There is a sign saying what is and isn’t allowed here. The beach is sandy with some pebbles, the water is clear with a green tint. The beach is 1.7 kilometers long and never crowded. On the left is the town of Glace Bay and on the right is Donkin. An interesting feature of this beach is the coaldust in the water due to the underwater Sydney Coalfield.
I enjoyed my visit here and I will be back.
About Piping Plovers - Piping Plovers are an endangered migratory bird. During spring and summer they breed along the Atlantic coast. In Nova Scotia, there are fewer than 40 breeding pairs; a decline of more than 25 per cent since 2001. They face many threats, including habitat loss due to development, disturbances from recreational beach users and off-leash dogs, and natural predators.
About NWA - The newly designated National Wildlife Area (NWA) in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, comprises 392 hectares of estuary and marsh waters enclosed by a barrier beach. The site also includes mixed woodland, shallow coastal water, and eelgrass flats and encompasses the Big Glace Bay Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary (MBS) plus an additional 14 hectares. The NWA designation will help conserve the landscape to protect species at risk, including the Piping Plover, American Black Duck, Canada Goose, Common Goldeneye, and Bufflehead. The NWA designation will also support the management of wildlife conservation, research, and interpretation.
Thanks for watching!
