Great Video, I contacted Ron Pratt about getting a gasket for my egg. He has changed some of the procedures. First he get away from Acetone and scraper. He suggest you get a 3M paint and Rust remover wheel. I will say this was very easy and done in 10 min. The wheel loosens the BGE gasket then you just peel it off. You then use the wheel to clean everything off. The rest of the instructions that come with the directions are similar to this video. Ran a cook for ribs and there was no smoke leaks and it held at 250 degrees.

Once again Ron another great video. I’ve installed many Rutland gaskets on my and friends eggs. A couple of suggestions that I do in addition to what you did. I use a wall paper roller to press the gasket onto the Permatex instead of the paper towel and wood. Another thing I do after their gasket has set for 24 hrs. I use a Mapp gas torch to burn off all the loose fibers that are on the gasket especially on the seam in the back. This way I don’t have to worry about the fibers flaking off and going on my food.

Any issue closing the egg lid after installing the gasket. After installing I closed the lid and noticed the front doesn’t quite meet the lip with the larger gasket. Will it settle as it sets or will I need to adjust the lid?

Ron Pratt is a great guy to work with. I actually just installed a Rutland on my XL yesterday. Its curing for 24hrs now. I also used the paint remover disc to remove the old gasket residue and it made that task MUCH easier. I picked one up at Ace and it's used with a cordless drill. Ron has a picture of the one he recommends so you get the right one.

Another way to remove the old adhesive and tough stuck felt is with a drill with one of those stone-like sponge wheels. I do that every time and it won’t gouge your eggs rim. Great video. Thinking it’s time for me to tap Ron again for another kit.

Oh ok. I assumed it was a link I guess. In any case, I'm a little leery about using high heat silicone in a cook chamber where my food is cooking. Seems like there could be potential poisonous fumes drifting around inside my grill. Have you done any research on this to see if this could pose any kind of issues? Nice video by the way, and thanks for getting back to me. I'm just a little concerned and I'm sure you can understand why with the silicone being able to heat up and floating around in the cook chamber. I've seen others using it too so it's probably ok and just me. But I haven't been able to find anything anywhere actually saying this is bad or ok.

I have a Rutland gasket on my woodburning fireplace doors, they have lasted for 15+ years with no issues. I am wondering about the high temp adhesive and any odors it may give off, probably have to do a break-in cook before using it with food? Rutland products can be had at Tractor Supply stores, just not in the specific lengths you may need for your Kamado type grill.

Hi Ron, I was wondering, how would you recommend to store your egg if it is not used for a while so that it doesn’t get mould inside. Is there a way like leaving the vents open slightly under the covers ? And if there is mould that builds up best way to get all off and start grilling again.
@FOGOcharcoal
@FOGOcharcoal 2 года назад
Hey Mark, that is a great question. If you live in a high humidity area, I think that it's going to happen no matter what you do. I believe that leaving that bottom vent open a bit may help but its not fool proof. Make sure to clean the grates etc well before putting it away and that may help a bit too.

15 or more minutes at 500F + should burn off any mold issues. I live in the Ohio river valley with plenty of humidity... I typically just close off the vents after cooking and let it bake until the fire is smothered. Once it is cooled I have a kettle grill cover I put on it with a draw string for underneath. It stays on our patio year around and I have never noticed any mold issues storing this way.

That was a big problem for me here in Charlotte, North Carolina until I started putting a little shim, just big enough to prevent the lid from completely closing. I have used a number of things, from sticks, to a piece of Romex, to keep just a little space between the upper and lower gaskets. Door shims work great because they have an angle to them so there is not so much of an opportunity to dent the seal. After I did this and left the bottom vent open, I never had another problem.

Couple of questions on the use of Rutland Gasket. I have a Jotisserie for my large Green Egg and it works great with seals on the top and bottom halves.
