Birmingham is my birth place and where I grew up,,it really is bad,just like any big city,but I haven't lived there in 30 years,and the last time I was there,a few years ago there to visit,it was even worse,these young gangs pretty much completely run the whole place now! Very sad.
Joey had the Lyndhurst Pub on the Lyndhurst Estate in Erdington..my sister lived near enough behind his boozer in Fairbourne Tower and my ex lived in Kentmere Tower so I used to be in there all the time when this was going on...Joey was always there with his brother Tommy and their firm but what was happening was that Joey had turned the boozer around in its fortunes and it had became a nice little money earner and was always buzy...now the trouble started when the Castle Vale firm of the likes of Justin "Fatman" Laughton and Joey Ward and the Cadbury brothers Fatty and John and George and Russel Broughton and others wanted to be able to sell their things in Joeys pub and also were trying to extort him because the gaff was making money...so that Sunday afternoon it just all came to a head and was some of the most serious hard-core violence I've ever seen...I remember dudes were chopped to pieces running towards the Yenton and dudes blood everywhere..dudes had machetes..swords..butchers knives and it was going off bad in the boozer and in isolated groups out the front over by where Edmund Campion school is...crazy crazy times...thankfully I don't think anybody actually died but several came very close.
That is some scary firm from the Vale. A few years after this, Russell Broughton and the Cadbys had a fall out leaving 2 Cadbys slashed up quite badly and then Broughton battered quite badly. It’s just a different world. Makes me laugh these clowns on here posting that it was bulls%t. I know (not well) a couple of people who were there from either side - There is still absolute hatred between them today. I can’t think of many things worse than being on the seriously wrong side of the Cadbys, Russell Broughton or Danny who was on the door there that day. I think I’d emigrate.
Hi John. The Cadby brothers are all late 50s, early 60s and whilst still about, are probably far less active. Russell Broughton is banned from entering the Castle Vale estate - I always thought he was related to the Cadbys but I may be mistaken. I’m not sure the attack was any way racially motivated as Egan suggests - Some of the Vale firm were 2nd generation Irish I have been told by someone on Egan’s side that people were being slashed across the throat/face whilst already down on the floor. I’ve also been told by someone from the Vale side that a well known boxer was stood behind the bar with a shotgun and not the innocent victim he claims to be.
i was there that night just having a drink with mate not aware what was about to take place but the atmosphere you could cut with knife tense not welcoming just glad to have got out the door with my mate and away unharmed

I remember this night so well, lived right by there and usually get off the bus at that stop but just happened to go McDonald's (stop before) and walked the back way. Sirens everywhere when i got out, police, ambulance, helicopters.... Road I'd usually walk down was taped off and someone had been axed up bad there so could easily have been caught up in it. I geew up on castle vale where the gang was from and they notorious. If you remember the guy from Tipton who got broke out the prison van, it was them that did it. Friends with some of them that fought alongside Joe bute and mine were banned from his pub and most of erdington, thats why we had to bus it out to go for a drink.

Birmingham is rough man, coupdve swore this was the Dubliner but I could be wrong, that was rough too, I’ve lived here my entire life and the only man to run that pub without paying was Paddy Finn and for good reason, he and his. It’s were well liked and respected and could and would all fight. Great guys, Hie is a top guy too, it’s a shame that the other firms wernt inside at the time… the police station is literally opposite the pub too!

I drank In the Lyndhurst when Joe had it. He was a gentleman (unless you got on his bad side that's) 😂 I was to young to drink there when this happened but know loads of people that was there and this story is 1 million percent true 💯

I can take most things in my stride. I've stood down plenty of characters, I've stood down dogs (fortunately not yet needed to deploy the sleeper on a dog), just last week I walked straight past a fight involving a knife (which wasn't used in the end), stopped to see if I knew either of the combatants (in which case I might have intervened in a reasonable way) and carried on unfazed. The sound of this caper, though ... I certainly won't be running anywhere but I reckon I'd have taken a brisk detour if I saw that going on. I wouldn't turn a blind eye if I saw kids or old dears in trouble, though. I look forward to hearing extracts from your own journal, brother - as I presume there'll be an element of football interest and you're not going to garnish it with fairytale nonsense. As ever with biographical content, you've got to take care not to drop yourself or anyone else in the sshh-you-know-what with the law. Ha ha!

This really happened though. I lived right by it and would usually get off at that stop but got off early to go McDonald's and so missed most of it. They one the few people who done a prison break in recent times, if you Google the Wolverhampton/Tipton lad who got broken out the van, 2 of them that did it were the ones who attacked the Lyndhurst.
You've been told by various people, incuding the narrator, that this was very real. I come from the Brum area and the gang who attacked the Lyndhurst were/are nasty violent people.

I’m from Small Heath, I left in 1978, was a very tough city but Erdington was a better area with nicer pubs and trees on the roads. Down graded by too many villa fans in the area. He was never the toughest guy on the planet. Toughest guys worked hard and got out. Tough family in those days were the Sheldon’s and the Falls. Big fat bullies get knock out in Birmingham as happened to a big fat bstard that got done by a 17 year old kid with a good lump of 4x2 as he bent to pick up his bottles of milk off green lane in 1975. That kid became a multi millionaire.
