Crazy that he died at 24. I enjoyed listening to his music at 16, I’m now at an older age than he ever lived to see. Crying shame. May God rest his soul.
For everyone asking, I’ll be 26 in a week. Time really flies. As a birthday gift, all I ask is that y’all spread love man. Always about the next person when you do and say things. The world needs it more than ever.
Annoying when you see a top 10 and hes not there with yiur jay z drakes and nas😅. Nas said in the battle world L was a problem he was the best no 1 wanted to go against him. He died too young man. He was the best by lyrical talent by far. You can tell eminem was influenced by his style with the punchlines .
@@RossiB172 you couldn’t help but to drag eminem into it, eminem corny punchlines not touchin L. “Your opinion is like a broken calculator, it doesn’t count” 🚮
No doubt. It brings you back to that time. He lives permanently in that mid/late 90s era. Which is unfortunate cause there’s no doubt he would have continued to kill it well into the 2000’s.
@@wigsplitter777 His 2nd verse. Super unique flow. Melodic, almost scat-like. Never heard anyone do something similar before. I wish he would explore that style more.
The strongest opening in history of rap 🤣 Big L was legit NUTS. Jay is my fav of all time but with Big L's first 4 lines you just know nobody can top that. Rest in peace. Super talent.
Tell me bout it. Makes me sick then weird ass voices wheres the grittyness the crackles the record the darkness of the streets heard though the tracks. Different times man i cant ajust to it drake and lil wayne was were it all fell off for me
As an Emcee and one of the best to ever do it Big L's Pen game isn't praised enough!! It's like every line in his lyrics are written to perfection, he was spitting hot bars with top notch delivery and cadence. Big L was a great writer, a wordsmith, an underrated story teller and an iconic punchline King. R.I.P Lamont Coleman. The Hip Hop industry owes you a Movie based on Your short iconic life. You will never be forgotten.
Ductur Platypus Big L is better than Jay z.In my opinion people overhype Jay z to me he is decent rapper not a good one or even great which is blasphemous to say. His so called 'classic' as everyone says is simply a good album.Big L is far FAR superior.
Back then? Absolutely. Nowadays... I'd have to disagree.. as there are some ABSOLUTE demons out there with some of the most incredible freestyles out. But, again, the good hip-hop we grew up on and got to cherish, is almost, if not, nonexistent these days.
Word up ! New York gave birth to Hip Hop and the greatest of all time are from the East Coast (specifically New York) I'm from Cali but I always bump East Coast shit on the regular
@@L.ATRAFFICNMADNESS for sure... Nas, Biggie, Big L, Jay-Z, Rakim, Wu-Tang, DMX, KRS-One, LL Cool J, Kool G Rap, Fat Joe, Big Pun, Busta Rhymes, and the list simply goes on and on.
Big L is the hardest rapper of all time and Jay Z's last verse is one of the best verses I have ever heard still to this day and they both did it live on the radio I still come back to this a few times a year at least
Every now and then I come here just to remind me what rap music is really about ...... It takes me back to the 90s for a lil minute .....if your here god bless you
@@thaAMAZNblue1 doesn’t he only have one album? and it was put together after he died which i can’t say counts much what other songs do you recommend? i do like is verse in the intro (the big picture) another iconic verse imo
RIP to Big L. I love to hear this type of stuff.. before all these rappers got fat, rich and happy. they were hungry and brought mad skills to the table.. this is incredible
I'm actually so confused. Isn't being ahead of your time means you were too early? So if he was so ahead of his time then he should've been born wayyy earlier not later right? This lyrics been fucking with my head
WTF IS THIS??? LIKE HOW TF DID WE LOSE THIS MAN BIG L 😭 seriously has to be put in the top 10 of best freestyles ever did 🔥🔥🔥 both Jay and big l went insane.
They both snapped! two rap legends blessing the ear with that golden era rap flow on a old school 90’s beat. This is a huge gem for golden era rap listeners
L was so great in this that people forgot how dope Jays verse is. “Shit is eternal, I rock the heavens well, even if they don’t let me in heaven, I’ll raise hell, til it’s heaven” and “mcs tryin to be the best, but even in dyin’ couldn’t be this def.”
Just want to give a big ups to my cuz Greg who passed away today. Greg, I remember when you came to LA in '00 and showed me and Chris the truth. You downloaded this off Napster and from that moment on, I was hooked on L. Thank you cuz, I will forever be indebted to you for showing me the G.O.A.T. Big L. R.I.P. Greg, love you my nigga.
To be fair to Tupac, he really wasn't a punchline rapper. That wasn't his style. Tupac's freestyles were actually freestyles, they weren't rehearsed like some of these other rappers. R.I.P. 🐐
Why y'all hating on Jay. His bars weren't ass, of course L's bars were better. But that doesn't take away from Jay's. It seems more like y'all are jealous of him than actually listening to him. Jay was Scottie Pippen on this freestyle, L was MJ. Scottie was good, but MJ was better.
+Scottie Pimpin People are jealous of his success. Jays lines are alright but he fucks up his rhythm a couple times, and his later shit blows but the dude is mad famous. This alright freestyle by Jay was during his peak, people are just bitching because they don't understand that mediocrity sells.
+Scottie Pimpin man u right people always talkin shit. L had great habilities freestyling and in the video we can see it but jay's part is also sick and no one can deny it.
fuk jayz he tried to bite big L's style on this. we don't respect biters. Jay-Z a bitch he ain't top five. no way. DMX is better, nas, tupac big L, styles p, 50 cent (the original 50). to name a few. big L in my opinion might be the best mc honestly. Jay z is ass. plus he's so fugazy I can't respect him how do y'all..
I wish I could hear what Big L would have come up with through the years if he never got killed. L was so raw and had incredible flow, was witty and quick, a New York Legend...
Jay Z sounded like an amateur compared to the God MC. You know Jay had to be standing there thinking: "Don't pass me back the mic, you're going to make me sound like a fool". Then he did. LOL.
Jim Brown haha around 3:55 I think the DJ tells Jayz to shut up because L is getting back on the mic. Jayz last verse isn’t bad but it’s still nothing compared to Big L’s
@@nahyeahwhatsahandle all I'm saying is on this song Jay z was actually freestyling off the top maybe he has some phrases and lines but the most part was off the top.. Big L sounds like he been practicing that shit for months 😂 still dope tho
As a Brooklyn native I must say this is crazy listening to this in 2021 with my older ears knowing all this history between these two. Big L was untouchable in this freestyle point blank period! The dead president Brooklyn’s finest hov would of flamed this shit. Big L was so fucking ahead of his time man smh
IT'S NOT TRUE BIG L IS UNHEARD OF AS PEOPLE WHO LEGITIMATELY POSSESS RAP KNOWLEDGE/ARE LEGITIMATELY AWARE OF HISTORY OF RAP GENRE IN GENERAL ARE WELL AWARE WHO HE IS/HOW HE IMPACT/INFLUENCED RAP MUSIC DURING HIS SHORT TENURE IN THE GAME BEFORE HE WAS VICIOUSLY MURDERED.
We all had our street days didn't we? It's good to feel that raw shit ain't it? Much love from southwest little rock. Stay outta death and stay outta jail yall. Love yall so much
I've never been too much of a Jay Z fan... I grew up listening to Big L, Kool G, Mobb Deep etc. but I could never find myself truly enjoying Jay's music
His ryhmes are deeper than usual and the word game is strong but hi flow isn't as good as other top rappers like Big L or Mobb Deep (but still good), he is more like Nas in his style, for me he is the goat
I remember hearing this for the first time in middle school like 07-08 and I was instantly hooked! Easily one of the hardest freestyles in hip-hop history
Jay-z killed it too. Jay-z is the greatest at rap. He just wasn't the most appealing when it came to first impression. Jay-z is one of those Greats that's similar to a car that's probably not the fastest from 0-60 mph, but will still smoke your ass in a quarter mile. Jay-z needed time to show you his full capabilities, so you can look back in reflect on it. Well just think about when they created the cars from the 70s - 80s, who would ever thought they'll last for 20-30 years later?? And as the time moved forward, the industry started to take away the heavy duty elements that were instilled in the old school cars, and made the newer cars more cheaply, but technically fancier. But now you'll be lucky if the motor last as long as the old school cars did. That's Jay-z. Jay-z is that Artist that has more to offer, then just being fast from 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. But Jay will start passing you up at 0.444 milliseconds later...
I wonder if Big L would've sold out if he was still around through the new generation of hip-hop. Eminem used to be just as good, but his last couple of albums sounded like mixtapes that end up in my mentions on Twitter.
I don't understand people like you. Eminem is still just as talented as he was years ago. Albums shouldn't always sound the same. If they do, then why continue rapping? He grew as an artist, and experimented with his music. Did it work? Yes. Em never lost his touch.
@@cesarescamilla7660 dude if he’s your favorite rapper that’s fine but don’t sit here and say Em has that same it factor he had in the early 2000s now, his delivery , lyrics and overall sound just don’t match up, still a good artist just not what he once was , and that’s ok!
@@joshbowers1898 He's jus5 different now. Way more technical. Alot think he is better......I prefer his older stuff as i was in my late teens in the late 90's but some of his new stuff is great too.Like it or not he is the GOAT
Hear what Big L is saying. There's no lyricist like him today. He started reaching, so I left him sleeping with his temple leaking. It is so hard, and it's insane. I'm so ahead of my time my parents haven't met yet! BEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME! He's the 🐐!
it's been exactly 22 years since this day. My dad bought this tape for the house and it was slapping. We got a knock on the door and it was the firefighters. They said "we heard there was a fire, where is it ?" we pointed to the stereo.. Good times
Big L second verse was crazy, but Jay responded with a cadence you never heard before and matched the tempo. Respect to both, they both are the best to ever do it.
