I think there's no + next to the Oxygen because it is the actual absolute value of the O2 in the atmosphere which started at 0 whereas the others have a + and are smaller than they realistically should be because the planet started with some and it's just measuring what you have added to the planet, so presumably since you only needed to add a tiny bit to add water it was already close to the melting point, and similarly there was already a bit of atmosphere and such which maybe was what made the planet a good terraforming candidate? That's how I justify it anyway.

from an irl perspective Quill, pls remember that the planet you are on, started with low temp, low atmospheric pressure and no oxygen. At low atm pressure, water has lower freezing and boiling points, so don't use Earth's references, they won't apply. 30:00 and Quill has noticed that the game's units make no sense, even if generously interpreted as the change from the starting baseline, and not the directly measured value. (Ie his thermometer doesn't read 100uK and instead reads -15°C plus 100uK) The machines enacting relatively small changes to the planet makes perfect sense, emitting 1kg of pure O2 per second is almost nothing to an atmosphere of about 5×10^18 kg. This is why terraforming planets is such an impossible dream, the amount of material needed is insane. The breakpoints of change however don't make much sense, the changes so far are barely even noticable against the normal background variations. And yet he has put lakes on Mars. Obviously this is done for game design reasons, IRL accurate terraforming is incredibly slow and expensive. Its the same reason you can turn a kg of hematite you found on the ground into a fully functional windmill with wireless power to everything.
@shdwbnndbyyt
@shdwbnndbyyt Месяц назад
Quill, the planet started with ZERO free oxygen, based on the screen readings... Whereas for pressure and temperature, you are adding TO the already existing pressure and temperature (the actual starting temperature and pressure are not listed). Thus the "+" beside them... although one could be added to the oxygen level as well, but obviously the game developers did not think so.

I haven't played the game, but the temperature doesn't make sense (that's colder than space). It has to be the amount of warming. With climate change on earth, we are hoping to limit warming to just 2 kelvin; raising the average temperature by 4 K would be pretty disastrous. In the game, it has to be that there is a baseline temperature, and the "warming" display shows how much you've raised the average. It's the only thing that makes sense...

The numbers are made up and dont matter, and thats fine. They dont make sense as true vaules or deltas, and thats also fine. The numbers exist to quantify the game mechanics, not to be accurate. The average pressure on the moon goes from 300 pPa to 40 pPa, as the lunar night turns to lunar day. That's low enough that air resistance is essentially nil; anything you drop, including feathers, parachutes or even dust, will fall at the same rate as a block of steel. That's too low for liquid water, which only forms at and above ~611 Pa, a trillion times denser, irrespective of temperature. If the planet starts out above 600 Pa, allowing for liquid water at 273K, and the end goal is ~100 kPa (1 atm), then Quill is 0% of the way there. Speaking of temperature, due to its relative lack of atmosphere, the moon has a "daily" (lunar day) differental of ~360K. Without an appreciable atmosphere to spread the heat around, it doesnt even make sense to think of the moon as having an "average" surface temperature. Just the energy of the sun hitting the surface heats the nightime lows of 140K (leathally cold) to 400K (deadly hot for an environment, but possibly colder than your kitchen oven's lowest setting). Then the sun sets again, and the extra heat gets radiated into space. Never mind that the in-game planet is manifestly tectonically active, and there is molten rock on the surface. Like Earth, the in-game planet is a molten ball of rock with a thin, solid skin floating on the surface. The idea that the surface could start arbitrarily close to 0K is nonsense. So all the heating Quill has done is literally immeasurably small compared to the daily fluctuations the planet would have experienced from its sun and its own core. None of this is a problem for the game. Its a game about one person terraforming an entire planet in weeks with a magic gun, so its compelety fine that the numbers are made up and dont matter. Suspension of disbelief is a thing. The scientific inaccuracy of the numbers in no way makes the game worse, so we can all stop with the apologism.
