BIG MISTAKE! This is what happens if you use TAPWATER on a saltwater tank
My RO unit failed for some reason and i didn't notice. I accidently added 250L of tapwater to my saltwater aquarium and now i have hair algae, diatoms and cyanobacteria everywhere! NEVER USE TAPWATER

I had this exact thing happened to me in the past. So now I just add seachem prime automatically just in case it also has a ammonia binder in it so it’s not a bad thing to have in your system

That's awful man. I am getting ready to set up my first salt water system and have been watching loads of videos to learn as much as possible. I know its a hard lesson for you but by posting this you are teaching thousands of us a valuable lesson. I am sure you will sort this out. Hope the cold goes away soon.

I have a nano 10L saltwater tank where i use tapwater in tandem with cuprasorb in the filter to remove copper. Its fine. I have xenia, a duncan, a few anenomes, gsp some macros and it is thriving. All of the corals and anenomes are opening nicely. GSP is growing everywhere. Minimal algae, perhaps slightly more than with RODI water but the only difference is that i have to scrape down the glass once per week.

Thanks for sharing this is great information for beginners and us fanatics. I had a similar problem with my RODI for topping off, the local store doesnt test enough and their unit was only working at 50% this really upset my 4 month old system and the tank almost crashed it was like a fresh start.

I have been running a 55 gallon tap water reef for years full of coraline algae and soft corals also zoas it’s a big risk so you are right don’t try it !

I guess it depends on the region because I used to tap water for my tank and nothing really happened

Oh no, not good, have you tested the waste outlets tds ? It Might help you see what’s happened, you haven’t put new pipes on the lately etc and maybe got them muddled up by accident?

I have that meter and it says not to immerse it that deeply in the water. Maybe that's causing an issue with readings.

This is crazy same exactly thing just happened to me. Didn’t know for a month sps lost absolutely all colors even simple sps and slowly or not growing then powerheads covered in brown lost fish had for over 17 years cleaner shrimp I thought it was my two part. Then found out booster pump failed pressure drop below 20 psi. From 65 psi. And I run a 6 stage too
