How Teddyboy Greg found his Russia
Thirty-five-year-old Teddyboy Greg might be the most eccentric American entrepreneur in Moscow. Having moved to Russia at the end of last year because of “acute political differences with the US establishment,” he opened his barbershop here. Every inch of his body is covered with tattoos representing what is important to him (mostly women and rock ’n’ roll stars). Only his right leg is free of art - for now. Teddyboy has left this body part out so as to dedicate it to his new homeland, Russia.
Teddy's Rock 'n' Roll Barbershop offers as strong a contrast to the nearby business district as its owner. On the left is a pharmacy, on the right a repair shop. In between is an open door, from which the sounds of rock 'n' roll flow out nonstop. Passers-by pause to watch the exotic-looking barber working his magic on a customer's head through the large windows. (Teddyboy works alone: he found local barbers unsatisfactory, and it takes a lot of time to train an apprentice.) Some come in to take a selfie with Teddyboy or visit the barbershop like a museum. The walls are covered with posters of American cult musicians from the 1950s. Russian motifs are represented aw well: among the rock stars, pictures of Vladimir Putin and Nikolai II are particularly striking.
