I think that Pratt and Whitney 28 cylinder radial was used to power the B-36. 6 turning and 4 burning. The one plane I want to see in the air before I die!
I was lucky enough as a kid to hear the distinctive snarl, and watch one passing at a moderate altitude over my grandfather's farm in the late '50's-unforgettable. Also used to go to a summer camp that had B52's doing scrambles every morning passing very low over the camp on takeoff-same time every AM-no need for reveille-they shook you out of bed(the camp wasn't far from the end of Rome NY SAC base ) runway)

No,pull props backwards to put oil in bottom cylinders into intake; be sure to pull plugs on lower cylinders to drain them first....a must if engine has sit for awhile...
Maybe you should check your facts before spewing such nonsense as "Rolls Royce named their piston engines after birds of prey" Which bird of prey was the Merlin. Griffon, or Meteor? The P&W 4360 made its way into several thousand warbirds before VJ day.
Merlin is a British bird of prey, the Griffon is named after a vulture. The Meteor is not an aero engine, so did not follow the convention. Dead right about the 4360. Probably the best known is the CV Corsair.
As I understand it the 4360 was too late for WW2. It was used in the B-36, B-35, B-50, Super Corsair, C-124 Globemaster 2, Hughes XF-11, Hughes "Spruce Goose" (and probably some others that I've forgotten about) - all of those were post-WW2. Still an awesome engine and my favourite one.
