BIG OR small Rifle Actions: Howa 1500 Mini/Weatherby Vanguard/CZ 527M/Sako Vixen 

I really don't know why the cz's are not more popular. They are truly excellent rifles, are not expensive, tough, practical. Nothing to dislike about them at all.

I sold CZ's in 223 to pro goat shooters in the late 1980's. They didn't handle the work well. First thing to pack up was the magazine. They shifted to Tikka's with no further problems.

I love my 527 carbine in 7.62X39. Shoots steel ammo or brass and is extremely accurate. I watch a lot of your videos on my TV and I can't write a response but just know you are doing a great job.

Love those CZ 527's. Sad they are discontinued. Would like one in 7.62x39. I have a CZ 452fs in .22lr and a 457 lux in .22 mag and they are among my favorite rifles. I have a Howa 1500 in .308 and just bought a mini action carbon stalker in 7.62x39. Looking forward to that one, just wish it came with irons.

I own a Howa 1500 7.62x39. Great gun for the price. Good weight and feel in the black stock. The gun is very accurate, up to 200 yards so far. Enjoy your vids very much. Keep well my friend.

Before Tikka started making the T3, they had rifles in 3 different action sizes. These were the M590, M595 and M690. They are much sought after because, as good as the T3 is, these earlier rifles were better

I always wamted to take one of these micro action's in 223 and fit it with homeade spartinesq style folding stock. Maybe something made out of a piece of half round wood or polymer....just forward of the mag enough to get a hand on. I would fit a small wire folding stock, maybe from an m1 carbine. Something on the lines of a modern day M4 survival rifle. With a couple of 22lr or 22 mag adapter converters, i could hunt small game to hogs amd deer all with one gun...and that one gun would be very small and lightweight.

I have the howa mini in 6.5 grendel. Shot badly. 2.5 to 3 inch groups. Crap stock, trigger far to heavy. After taking up the first pressure I had a long pause waiting for it to fire. So I glued 6mm micarta in the barrel channel. Still hidn't fix flexx probs. Then I routed out and fully bedded the action. Now just waiting for a 2lb trigger spring kit. Looking forward to the kit to arrive so I can shoot it.

I think the 6.5 Grendel is undoubtedly the best performing cartridge in the Howa mini action, but because of the cost of ammo and availability I got mine in 7.62 x 39. If i was a re-loader I would have gone for the 6.5. Great content. Cheers

I have a Howa mini action 223 with the heavy barrel in stainless steel. Great gun. Super accurate and nice to carry. Out of the dozen or so guns I own, I think it’s the most accurate.

I just recently learned that the howa 1500 action is closely based on the howa goldenbear. Witch is closely based off the sako L61R . Really cool stuff. Now I Kno why my w vanguard is so accurate n smooth

My Sako L461 in .222 is my 'I'm gonna take it with me when I die' rifle. Beautifully machined, super smooth to operate, deadly accurate with Nosler Ballistic Tips and H322 powder., and a sheer joy to handle.

The longest action in a mid cartridge was Weatherby. Roy first introduced his 240 Weatherby in the full length action he used for his 300 and 340. They’re few and far between.

I have the Howa Miniaction in 6.5 Grendel and it shoots really well. The only thing that I didn’t care for was the bottom trigger guard/mag release design. It’s all plastic and it’s very easy to bump the mag release and lose mags in the field. Fortunately there’s an aftermarket company that machines a billet aluminum trigger guard and a redesigned mag release system that’s all metal. It really makes the gun more enjoyable to carry and the bedding screws are cinching down on metal instead of plastic. I don’t usually jump on the latest and greatest calibers but the Gredel is an exceptionally accurate round with very mild recoil. Perfect for anyone looking for a medium range deer rifle or just a fun target rifle. Aftermarket accessories are readily available for them as well.

I bought a Howa .223 sportier short action (not mini) as it was on sale. The only mini actions available were with Varmint barrels… COVID supply issues here in Australia… I’ll just make do….

Zastava also makes a very nice mini action.

My 1970 Winchester model 70 .222 has a long action with something done to it to accommodate the .222

Howa 1500 does a mini, short, and long action. I wish more gunmakers did this. Sako 85 does this but even more extensive. XS, S, M, L, XL as far as I’m aware.

I have a howa in 300blk 16" varmint , half moa all day with handloads, it's the cheapest rifle with a proper recoil lug and screw in barrel. Bedded it in a Boyd spike camp stock with jb weld.....soo cheap for the accuracy you get.....thanks for the vid

I have an Axium. How makes a superb rifle and scoped I was able to clover 5 at 100 yards I spread them out to 1 1\4 inches at 200 yards. I was on my game that day but the rifle is more accurate than I could have dreamed. Money well spent.

it appears CZ has replaced its entire center fire line with the model 600 now. no more cz527, 550, 557 etc. doesnt matter how good the new stuff is, the history and legacy of the old rifles was without equal.

Got to agree, I like the Ruger scout rifle in .223 but that bloody stupid .308 size magazine is bloody ridiculous. Other than that I would have bought one a long time ago.

A Marlin with a Sako action. I guess it made sense to use that action rather than tooling up to make their own. Good quality in any case. Thanks for the lesson on action size!

You have to try the 6.5 Grendel. It has ruined me over every other AR-15 cartridge and with light felt recoil, shooting the same bullet weight as the typical 7.62x39, for small to medium game and precision shooting, it excels. Thank you for your time and insight. Love the channel.

There's a 'walnut hunter' model of the mini action on the howa website. Might scoop one up when they get onto store shelves. Already have a 527 carbine.

After discovering the Grendel in my semi auto, I really had a desire to have one in a bolt gun. I thought about building one on a 700 receiver. Then I found a used CZ 527 American in the Grendel online one night. I purchased it and am glad I did. This thing is sweet. It had a Vortex scope on it and instead of using the factory rings they put a base on it and higher rings, which I didn't like. It raised the scope too much. I put the CZ rings on it and couldn't sight the scope in. So I put a Burris on it to see if it was the rifle or scope. It was the scope so I will be sending the Vortex back. I really like the Burris more but I bought it for my semi auto. It's really sweet with the Burris on it. Can't wait to shoot it off of the bench.

howa has long action, short action, mini action

Yeah I agree man having a heavy long action is a bit of overkill, unless you're shooting something big it's just excess weight that really doesn't assist with accuracy...

I own a highly customized howa 1500 in 223 and a cz 527 in 7.62c39. Love them both. I think both are underrated rifles.

I liked the size and style of the Howa 1500 and almost bought one back in the mid 1990's. But upon handling one I found that the action had quite a bit of tool marks, but most notably was the amount of slop and play in the bolt to receiver fit. It seemed to lock up tight but when open rattled around up and down, left to right and in every other direction you could think of. This allowed virtually no clearance between the bolt shroud and the comb of the stock. It was noisy, loose and it would bind when operated. The rough tooling marks did not aid in this. But, the design and overall look were great. A true Mini Mark X action it was. I can't speak of how they are now, and if Howa corrected the problems I encountered. I do see they sell this action alone so gunsmiths must be getting requests to build up rifles on them. So, I opted not to get one and instead found the Remington Model 7 with its short action to be the better choice. If at the time the CZ was available here I would have gone with that seeing as how I was top heavy with Rem. 700's. The detachable box magazine, true short action based on the 98 Mauser, solid reputation and overall good looks of the CZ product line would have made it an easy choice to make. The CZ was/is chambered for the 22 Hornet and is a fun gun and a good shooter. I too would love to see someone come out with something in 8mm Kurtz, and ammo made for it . It would fill the bill for a short action round with medium range ballistics in a well thought out caliber, case and bullet weight . For hunting it could do anything the .30 - 30 could and even the .32 Win.

I neglected to mention this estava mini Mauser has a chrome-lined chamber and bore. hints it's great for Surplus military ammo and design to utilize it very well

There is only one complaint I have with the Howa mini action, that is the detachable mag is easily dropped unintentionally because of where the mag catch is. Just slide your hand back down the stock a bit, as you do if your used to carrying a rifle with a flat floor plate and pop,, out it drops. easily fixed im sure, but just thought id mention that. Nothing like discovering you lost your mag 500 yards back when your walking into your hunting spot

My understanding is Tikka/Sako decided on one action size for a more cost effective manufacturing process. Tikka’s are a more price point rifle too, for whatever that’s worth. Good topic to address though. Thanks again.

Out of all of the micro actions, which one would you say has the smallest dimensions, and how much smaller is ot than its next micro competitor?

I'm sure the Howa is a good rifle but my preference is the CZ or Sako . I've read some really good reviews on the CZ 527 mini action especially in the reactively new 6.5 grendel. I think it would make a great light weight low recoil hunting rifle. Thanks Mike

This was a really great vid. I have always wondered why miltary bolt guns like the M24 and M40 are referred to as having Rem700 "Long & Short" actions. This goes some way to explaining the why's and how's of the differences. Although you did tend to wander off topic a little. With the myriad short action magnums such as the Ruger RCM, the SAUMs, the WSMs maybe we’ll see more makers going to short actions. Otherwise, why make short magnums? JMHO. Am I on the right path here?

Howa does make and sell a mini action sized for the smaller cartridges. I just picked up one in 6.5 Grendel.

You really need to get Sako L-46 in 7x33. Now that is a handy rifle and caliber.

Schwaben Arms made a Mauser 98 in 8mm Kurz

They have 223 Weatherby vanguard and the action is correct for the caliber. I have one.

I’m glad I found this video. I have a collection of different bullets and in my collection is a round that for years I never could identify, but when you picked up the 8mm Kurz I thought it looked familiar... turns out that’s what it was!

25-45 sharps please, properly sized action for caliber is just right. Some of the 16ga shotguns where 12ga receiver with 16ga bbl, ugh no good.

Never understood CZ and Brno. Are those the same brand? I think they are excellent rifles. I have a CZ 455 .22 and a Brno 502.2 12/7x57r. Not fancy in any way but they will always work, and they do it good!

Can you compare side by side the Howa and the Vanguard? Does Howa do the barrels for Weatherby Vanguards, or Weatherby? I dont own either but always thought they both had smooth actions. In the price range of Howa/Vanguards or other Brands similarly priced, which do you think has the quickest action? Im thinking maybe Tikka on that but was wondering what you would say. Reason I ask, is If I set up a hog hunting bolt action, with a Red dot sight, I want it to be quick, for hogs on the run. Ruger Americans or something with a 3 lug bolt less lifting height may work if its quick. I wont be buying real expensive straight pulls like a Blaser rifle.
