In this week’s video, I’ll show you how to build big beautiful raised beds out of rough sawn lumber. This is fresh cedar straight from the sawmill. The construction is very simple and results in a big box joint with a top frame strong enough to sit on. This raised bed comes in two sizes: 2ft X 4ft (61 X122 cm), or 4ft X 4ft (122X122 cm). The plans for the 2x4 will be available today on my web store. The plans for the 4x4 will be available in the coming weeks.

This is one of my favorite 'looks' for a planter (or really, many kinds of boxes), a big box joint, 'constructed' from staggered boards. So gee, thanks, now I gotta make some! :) I also like the look in this sort of construction, of 2 exposed dowels in each 'tab' (a nice diameter for this size board would be 3/4" or 1"), going into the end grain behind it. Maybe not too strong for that 'course', but with the boards above and below having their dowels at right angles to these, assuming the boards in each side are glued up into a panel, those corners are not pulling apart. Looks good and strong, because it is.

What dimension lumber did you use? I built similar raised garden beds last year out of cedar, but I used 5/4. That looks like 2" material. I have two final boxes to build this year, and I like the way you weave the corners. Makes it a stronger connection. My raised garden if you can picture it in your head has two 4'X4' boxes at the entrance. After that on both sides are 8'X2' boxes. In the corners is another set of 4'X4' boxes. Connecting those boxes on the back to make the square is a 6'X2' box. For the center of this enclosure I plan to put a multi-tier raised flower garden to attract the bees. At the entrance I will eventually put a wood arbor entry to complete the enclosed box.

Nice...With the right liner or just a hose, doubles as a German Shepherd bath/spa.🐕

It rains in Canada? I thought it only snowed . . . . A lot. 🤣

I live in the Hawaii of Canada. We get Arizona heat in the summer and mild weather most of the year. I think Texas got more snow than we did this year🤣

I been waiting a couple months to build a few raised beds. My local home depot a 2x4 cost 6.45 a piece. An 8ft 4x10 Is 32 bucks. No one I'm spending that much money right now. Maybe fence wood will have to do for the meantime

Hi Eric! Great build, very nice style on the planter boxes. I have a question about that long Phillips or Pozidriv bit that I see you're using in many videos. Does it give you more control and accuracy or just a clearer overview of what your fastening? What length and what size on the bits itself? Thank you for the great videos, really good content!

Thanks Johannes! That is a #2 -150 mm long, Robertson driver bit. Fits all the standard deck screws and pocket screws as well. You can find it on Amazon or just order a Kreg #2 long bit on Amazon - its more versatile. When I use a shorter bit, the drill body sometimes gets in the way, so I mostly use the longer bits.

Trouble is lumber prices have gone out of sight (8 dollars for an 8 foot 2 by 4 at home depot ) I have put my woodworking projects on hold

I am lucky enough to have a sawmill nearby where I purchase the cedar directly. Cedar is a native product here. The costs will vary depending on where you live but yes, overall costs have gone up over the last couple of years.

@@EricSorensenCanada I cringe to think what that cedar lumber would cost retail these days. Nice project BTW, Eric.

Thanks David! It's regional. Cedar is expensive where I live but probably cheaper for me than for folks who live out east. Just like black walnut is ridiculously expensive where I am but out east it seems like it's raining black walnut. The best thing to do is go to some of the independent local mills and see what they carry. If you don't mind processing your lumber at home, you can get good deals on rough sawn boards.

Hey Mike, that's when you go dumpster diving, or get real good at breaking down pallets, upcycling some of those attic contents, or patrolling the neighborhoods looking for the odd desk or table set out on the curb on trash day. Or heck, go out to the U-Store-It auction some weekend and bid on a forfeited storage shed. You're likely to mostly find cheap RTA made from low-quality particle board, but sometimes that can work too, for the odd shop build, such as that new miter or tenon sled for the table saw, a few push stick ideas, a storage bin to organize and finally use up the rest of that scrap pile, or that set of right angle clamping squares or extra-long wedge-style bar clamps you've been meaning to make. Sometimes an enjoyable Saturday afternoon can be making sets of coasters from blown-down limbs and scraps. A shortage of materials can lead to an explosion of creativity.

Does the wood have to be treated in some way in order to not rot away when exposed to the soil?
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 3 года назад
Cedar will last for many years outside. I've got a few untreated boxes and they've been around for 4 years. The important thing is to line the inside of the box with a decent weed barrier, or some kind of non-toxic liner. You want to avoid soil in direct contact with the wood. After the first year, once the cedar has been seasoned, you can stain the outside of the box.
