Loving seeing the evolution of the shop. You could get some hard foam and once you have all the tools in it that you want, you could cut out spots for all your tools. With one glance you can tell where tools go and what's missing. Once I did that for one of my cabinets I had to do it for all my storage.

I love the opening scene with all those the tentacles from Alien hanging down around the lathe. Sound absorbing tiles, migraine inducing lights and so much more, this new space is becoming a proper turning studio. You need to add some raked seating outside for when you do your live shows.... ... Interesting and entertaining as ever Mike and for someone who is, by nature, utterly disorganised it is great to see what the other end of the spectrum looks like.

I just love getting new toys and playing with them. I chatted with the nice people at Yandles when I was looking for a second dust extractor and they recommended Record Power as it is much quieter - two and a half times the price but I certainly recommend it. I have extended the pipe and have quick release ends so I can move it quickly from planer/thicknesser to table saw to band saw to router table. Keep up the good work, Mike and looking forward to accompanying you on the next stage of your journey 🌞

It's always so exciting getting new tools. I am really happy for you. You will love the bandsaw. Make yourself a V cradle sled for the bandsaw before you crosscut a round piece of firewood. It will save you from having the piece of wood suddenly ripped out of your hands and scaring the crap out of yourself at the least. Cutting off a body part at the worst. It doesn't take long to make one, and it's a whole lot safer and less scary.
@paulraines5152
@paulraines5152 2 месяца назад
I put a piece of round stock on the table of one of my 9" benchtop bandsaws and turned away for a few seconds while the bandsaw was running. I turned back around just in time to see the stock roll into the blade with catastrophic results. Although it was an awesome display and a very important lesson, I never want to see that again.

Mike that is very nice. I do believe the correct installation of the casters is both fixed wheels on one end and the two swivels on the other end.... that way it can be steered. As it is now you need to slide the fixed casters to turn. Your shop is really shaping up.

With regard to dust collection, using a T drastically reduces air flow due to turbulence. Always use a Y fitting, and when going around a corner use two 45 degree fittings instead of one 90 degree fitting. If you can, use 5 or 6 inch pipe and decrease to four inch with blast gates when you drop down to your tools. Workshop is coming together nicely ! Cheers.

Nice additions to the workshop. I have several storage cabinets on wheels. My largest is 42in wide. Most are 26in wide. These have really helped with storage. It is still easy to forget which cabinet and/or drawer has certain items. I have a 17in bandsaw. Before I added a milling machine to my workshop the bandsaw was connected to my 4in sewer pipe ducting which goes to my Jet dust collector. The milling machine required I move the bandsaw to the side of the milling machine. I was going to extend the 4in duct to the new bandsaw location but "temporarily" connected the 2 1/2in hose from my Fein shop vac. The shop vac is connected to a 2 1/2in port under the table. The 4in port is at the bottom of the machine. I was surprised to find that I get better dust removal with the shop vac at the 2 1/2in port than I did with the 4in port. Hence my "temporary" solution is now my preferred solution. As a chemical engineer, I cringe when I see folks with large amounts of ducting and fittings everywhere. Most folks do not appreciate how much pressure drop and suction can be consumed in our duct collection piping. A few years ago I took a long hard look at my 4in duct work and tried to remove as many fittings as possible. In general you want to minimize fittings. Each fitting consumes pressure drop, so less suction and less air flow. For 90 deg elbow get the longest radius elbow you can find so it has the lowest pressure drop. Sewer pipe 90deg have a sharp internal corner. I replaced these with long radius fittings. Avoid T fittings. I removed mine. T fittings have the highest pressure drop. I replaced my T with a Y and managed to remove a Y so now only 2 Y's. Minimize the flexible hose. This has higher pressure drop than smooth wall pipe. After my ductwork optimization I could feel higher flow and suction at the end of the hose at each machine. Not scientific, but noticeable improvement. I pondered getting an external cyclone. I did not get one since I knew it would consume a lot of pressure drop. I added a Thien baffle to the inside of my dust collector. This reduces the dust which goes to the pleated cannister at the top of my dust collection, which means I only need to clean the pleated cannister once a year. Dave.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 2 месяца назад
Thanks Dave, all very useful. I will have a look to see if I can get Y pieces to replace the T's in the range I bought. There is always a lot of experimentation with these things and I'm looking forward to having a go. I really only have two machines that need extraction so I me overthinking the whole thing but we will see. All the best Mike

Nice video Mike, i got 2 LED Panel Lights in my workshop and they do the trick (but my shop is quite small) and they are quite cheap also, i just need to make sure i keep up with keeping the walls white to reflect the light off too, ive not been too good at that LOL

Nice... I am jealous of the toolbox and that bandsaw. I am in a similar situation with my dust collector. I currently have it setup for my lathe but I need to run pipe around the shop for my other equipment. I look forward to seeing what you do. I have heard when running the pipe to make sure you have it well grounded to avoid static shocks. Sparks and dust don't go together very well.

Nice tool chest....and bandsaw. You may know this but I'll say it anyway. You should be able to eliminate the light flicker by changing your camera shutter speed or so I'm told by the chap that put my LED lights into my shop.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 2 месяца назад
I knew something along those lines but I film with old iPhones and not sure I can alter the shutter speed. I have tried moving it to 60 fps but it seemed to make it worse.

I have a theory. The more storage space you have. The more 'Stuff' you find to fill it. 😱🤣🤣. Apologies if I'm teaching Granny. I use 100mm PVC pipe, but not glued. As you say, the 'Proper' stuff costs a fortune. Credit to Stump Nubs. Try and use sweeping bends rather than full 90 Deg bends to which reduces drag/friction, and loss of suction. Keep ribbed flexible hose to a minimum for the same reasons.

Nice boy toys Mike. Down here in Oz record is a little pricey but we have lots of other good suppliers some made locally. Buy local if you can. Workshop is coming along well. Just a thought Mike why don’t you bring dust extraction pipe over to lathe where you were putting First tee. This would reduce the amount of pipe and lessen friction in pipe and give more airflow to lathe extraction by reducing amount of pipe reqd. Ie don’t go over top of garage door.
@MikeHolton

I will see what works best and maximises space, I'm fairly new to this level of dust extraction so a lot to learn first 😀

Hi Mike, as someone who has designed industrial dust collection systems for many years I can spot a few problems with the plan for your dust collection system as you described it. Firstly you should do some research into static pressure, aka friction loss in the ducts. Secondly tees are a definite no no, consider y's instead of tees, the shallower the angle the better. The elbows will need to be long radius otherwise your ducts will plug and/ or abrasion will wear the elbows out. You need to be very carful about the diameter of the ducts, if they are too large the air velocity in the ducts will be to slow and the dust will fall out of suspension and the ducts will plug if they are too small the velocity will be to fast and the dust will abrade through your ducts very quickly. There are books available to help you with your design. Good luck.

Hi Rob, many thanks for taking the time to explain a few things. I had done a bit more research since the video and I have decided to go with two dedicated units, one each for the lathe and the bandsaw. The other Items I want can all be happily serviced by a shop vac. Keeping dust down is of great importance so a few more ponds spent on two units seems well worth the cost. All the best, Mike

The Record Power Sabre 300 looks very interesting, Mike, it might just fit the bill for me. I have a 12' x 8' shed/workshop and the roof height is very limited. Very interesting indeed! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it's capabilities and performance in the future, I.e how you find the maximum cut capacity etc. All the best from York.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 2 месяца назад
Thanks Andy, it has about a 10" depth of cut and a very powerful motor. For the smaller workshop it seems like the ideal tool. When I got it I was still in my last place which was very limited for space and it was perfect for there. Videos will start to come out on the 24th ish. 😀. York is a beautiful place, I like a bit further up near Stockton.
