Hi All, this channel is dedicated to the creative side of wood craft, the majority of the videos will be woodturning and experimentation with resins and other materials. I will be sharing trips and techniques you are free to use and experiment with yourself but at your own risk. Thank you all for joining me on this journey. That is absolutely lovely dude. I would buy that, and treasure it. I've had a few run-ins with the redwoods of California, and they have consistently left me in awe of their beauty and Majesty.
Hi Mike! great stuff this, thanks! You can't smell the orange and coconut because you heated them too much. Coconut not above 30 degrees Celsius and the drops of orange oil should go in at the very end, just before you put the stuff right before you pour it in the tin :-)
That bowl has a lot of character Mike. I love how you kept the live edge and the grain is beautiful. Your recovery was nicely done, and adds to the bowl's story. Nice work!
Have you considered applying the dye (and other applications such as the shellac, sealer, buffing compounds, etc) while the bowl is turning on the lathe? It may make for a more uniform finish.
I liked the contrast between the gold and the black before you sanded it back, which also brought out the grain of the wood. It's a great idea, but the patterns gets lost when the value (light to dark) is so similar.
Mistakes are valuable lessons that promote humility and keep us from getting too cocky! My grand-dad turned his first (and only) funnel into a trophy cup on a pedestal, and titled it "Monument to Incompetence". It had a place of honor on his desk, and he kept walnuts in it! 😆
Welcome to the club, I joined quite early in my turning endeavours. It was called the golfing bowl (a hole in one). Still got it, hole and all. I told my wife that it was in case any fruit went off so the juice could run out. She never used it except for keeping the dogs collar in. I have often thought of plugging it but it is a nice conversation piece and causes a laugh. Love the elm bowl by the way.
Great bowl. You made the repair perfectly, IMHO. It is impossible to “match” the grain, so it always stands out as a repair. A contrasting wood or something in a different grain orientation is the way to go. The brighter sap wood, darker heart wood, and change of grain direction makes this a feature rather than a glaring repair. Super work!
Beautiful bowl - so much personality. One thing though. I don't know how true the colours are represented, but the pearlescent resin seems to have taken on a yellowish hue from the 'juice'?
Another beautiful bowl. You do awesome work. Glad to see the mistake and how you were able to repair it. Looks great with that slightly different piece in the bottom. Great job.
Welcome to the funnel club Mike , been there seen it done it lol , great piece of elm there haven't used elm since I retired , we made an awful lot of coffins from it back in the day , as for sanding inside quite a while ago I bought a felixible rod with a velcro ball shaped head which you just wrapped velcro sandpaper around if memory serves me correct I believe it was sold by Simon Hope . Well done again
It must be one of those mornings. 😮 I've just watched Mike Holton running his hands lovingly over an old well seasoned crotch before deciding on how to mount it. He drills so deep into it he nearly comes out the back end before giving it a good plugging before fingering the walls and splurging his wax all over it. 😂 I'm off for a cold shower. Beautiful piece Mike 👏👏👏
I took down an elm tree and I was going to use the trunk for a project but it was junk inside… I realized why the tree was dying… its core was all rot…
That is a beautiful bowl! Literally 5 seconds before the 'incident' I was thinking how does he know how far to drill... Now I know! Excellent rescue and it looks amazing!
For sending inner sides with complicated surface. I thought the sandblaster could be good. But it can leave rough surface. Other than that... "Think of England" could be the advice.
I must say that the end result was worth all of the tribulations along the way! Funny how the most troublesome wood yields the best results for those patient enough to work with it.
Love what comes out hidden within a piece of wood. I agree with your idea that mistakes should not be hidden but become part of the story of that piece of wood. Looking forward to watching the Yandles channel tomorrow. It’s where I get my wood.
What a great piece! I love it when you leave the rim natural, and this was particularly effective. An idea for deep sanding: what if a sort of fist out of aluminum foil as broad as you need it, then glue sand paper to the end of it...try wrapping some of the foil around your hand for protection. Worth a try? Love your channel, keep up the great work.
Hi Mike, another stunning piece even with the error an easy mistake it proves you are human and humans make mistakes. Honesty is always the best way to solutions. Thanks for the video and the training you could call this one the holey Moley or just marvellous.
