another tip is to make a series of half hitch knots between the sling line and the pull rope, end to end, so that the lead of the pull rope is in line with the sling line, slips right through the crotches where a knot might get stuck

Wow Tony is now Mr. Big Shot. They work great for better height and accuracy on setting your throw ball and line in trees. Just a tip, it’s often a better approach to tie off the terminal end of your pull rope around the base of the tree whether you use a carabiner or a bowline knot. Tony could wrap the tree at waist height after reattaching his carabiner rather than cinching the carabiner upwards and getting trapped by limbs that may break as the pull against the lean starts to move the tree…releasing line tension in an unpredictable and potentially dangerous way before the tree is pulled over center to fall safely. Hope that’s helpful.
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 2 года назад
Very good point, I will give that a try next time! Thanks Man!
@canvasman2307
@canvasman2307 2 года назад
@@InTheWoodyard Also, it’s a good idea to check for and remove loose bark where you’ll tie off to prevent line slipping up the stem. Cutting a small notch to nest the rope tie off wrap in is also a helpful safety step when tree diameter permits.

Good stuff. My first was homemade, then I bought the real thing. I throw most “pull” lines under 70’ now, I set high climb lines with an air cannon I built out of large copper tubing. Best thing ever. Cost of fittings and pipe were actually less than the cost of the Big shot.

If you have enough rope, just tie the end on the back side at the base of the tree. That way you can avoid getting caught up in those branches, and if you need to get the rope out before you get the tree down all you have to do is untie the base

My father and I modified a Retrieving Dog Training device that uses those .22 masonry nail blanks to trow lines. The core of it looks like an aluminum dirt motorcycle grip so very robust, just light, so we wrapped a lead line around the base and secured it for added weight. we use it for setting amateur radio antenna lines in trees and it works a beaut.

The fancy name for the knot Tony used to connect t the slingshot rope to the pull rope is a 'Prussick' knot. Common in climbing and rope rescue work. Can be double or triple depending on the size of ropes and the load being handled. GNI... or should I say Good Morning Irene?

Nice shooting...or lucky lol. When we were into trees I tried hand tossing the bags and it was frustrating making 3,5,10 tosses lol. I ended up making a air powered gun (potato gun) type launcher and it worked very well plus I made it for around 50 bucks and places like TreeStuff wanted a couple hundred bucks I believe for the same type thing. I just carried a little bike tire pump and pumped it up to 60-80 psi and pulled the lever and out it went lol. At 80 psi it would easily travel 100-150 feet, it was fun to use and made life so much easier.

We keep the line in a foldable basket. Some good RU-vid videos on how to used a 2nd or 3rd throw bag, for occurrences when you overshoot the crotch.

Yeah, like it ! I have a skidding winch on the back of my tractor with a 3/8"x 150' cable. I usually set a 28' ladder up and climb the tree high enough to throw a chain around it, then connect that to the cable.....but hauling the ladder up to the tree is sometimes a huge pain if it isn't out where you can get to it easy like the video one. I cut a 36" diameter oak last week that had a lean out over power lines and my fence and needed to go 180 degrees from the lean. Got it down OK. Question: Does the slick little orange cord come with the Big Shot or is it something he bought someplace else ?
