After Big Star finished mixing #1 RECORD, they played it in the studio for Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys. Carl loved it so much he called Brian Wilson to hear it on speakerphone. This story from Terry Manning didn't make our Big Star episode but it's too good not to share.

I was 13 in Memphis at the time they were creating Big Star, birthday 11-24-1957. My first trip was in April 1971 at the Overton Park Shell for Poco and Marshall Tucker Band. That may seem irrelevant but I was there when they were developing but in early '73 we moved to Florida. I was in Memphis when RCA had signed Bowie. There was a big move towards the (for a lack of a better term "glam rock"), I was the first kid in my 8th grade class with a shag haircut. When I hear "13" I get taken back to Bartlett High School and all the beautiful kids that I knew 50+ years ago. Those dances and hanging in the "smoking area" were the day. ❤

Great story---nice to know the two Beach boy brothers had such a deep connection and they got to hear the music of Big Star together.

This artist sharing playback has happened on every important record I’ve ever been a part of. The reaction of one’s artist peers really matters. They serve the need for expert feedback as well as to start up the gossip machine. It’s typically an anxious time for the host, relaxed fun for the guest. Finishing a record is a very exciting part of the creative process, taking incredible discipline. Premiering it in a big way helps. A playback party, listening session with your peers. No more changes - this is IT! In theory, anyway. Inevitably, there will be a phone call or two which I can’t stand.

Terry Manning is one of the coolest guys in the industry. Friends with both the Wilsons and Jimmy Page, who mutually admired him as well

Would love to hear Part 2 of this story! What were the final comments of both Carl and Brian? What transpired once finished playing Big Star? Was there any future meeting ever? Wish you could play the song and identify where Carl asked to stop!

He thought it was hard to hear over a phone with Dennis next to him feeding him cheeseburgers and cocaine.

When did Brian Wilson tour with Alex Chilton (Must have been the box tops)?
@Blend42

I don't think Brian did but the Beach Boys did in October 1967 and played shows with them in 68 and 69 (none of which Brian played at). Maybe Brian went to watch one of them? We know Brian was a fan of The Letter and covered it for Lei'd in Hawaii in August/September and again for Wild Honey in late October of 67.

Brian didn’t tour with them but the Boys did in ‘68. Brian likely knew them before hand and there’s a fair chance he met the Box Tops during rehearsals or in the studio

I think Alex spent some time at Dennis Wilson’s house. Isn’t that where Alex met Charles Manson? Anyway, Alex could’ve met Brian on a number of occasions.

He didn't. The Beach Boys did, but not with Brian. Alex met him in 1968 when he visited LA.

He didn't. Brian was no longer touring when Alex and the Box Tops opened for the Beach Boys. I guess it's possible that they somehow met.
