IMO the problem with creation club has been a matter of value. Give me the Skyrim alt armours merged + seamless integration and maybe we're talking ~$5 but actual offering was too much for too little. paying for mods has an extra layer, quality and quality control is all over the place; is skyland worth $10? maybe now (and i just put my money where my mouth is) but not in early iterations and you would have a damn hard time getting me to pay upfront. It might mean small teams putting out hearthfires or knights of the nine sized content if it's profitable which would be a win; that's the content i wanted out of CC and would be willing to spend a coffee on occasionally.

@The-Skyking
@The-Skyking 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment. You're right, a little disappointed BUT the pay mods are just for the Creation Club content. It's rumor that mod authors can charge for their mods. Plus, Todd for over a year has been saying they want to offer a platform for mod authors to be compensated for their work. Personally, I like how Nexus does it with offering ad revenue from the site to mod authors.

to me what makes the most sense, if modders want to make a living off of their mods, is they make and test their mod with the PC community without charging the PC community because they are their testers, and when the mod is finally finished, then they move the console version and then the people on the consoles pay as at that point it's a finished mod where most bugs have been hammered out.
@VaultArchive72
@VaultArchive72 10 месяцев назад
@@5226-p1e Sounds like a really poor disguise to say you just want free mods while also spitting on console players. Modding costs time and labour. Some do it as a fun hobby. Most modders are fine with being paid in "likes" and "exposure" while others need more of an incentive or see an opportunity to benefit from, and exercise their acquired skillsets. The PC "community" aren't their testers. They're doing you a favor by sharing their work. Patreon mods are fine. If you create an appealing enough product, people will pay for it. Most patreon mods I've come across are of extremely high quality. Also most mods don't require extensive testing by tens of thousands of people.
@igavinwood
@igavinwood 10 месяцев назад
I agree. This is just the start of a strategy to push the pay-to-play subscription model. Drop a base game, give the modders a platform and then charge players to swap between the differing modded styles for the game. This has been happening in slow motion for years now; it's only going to pick up speed as MS are allowed to gobble up studio after studio. I imagine as the owners of the IP they will eventually add 'new' DLC, which will be surprisingly similar to certain mods if they are not part of the pay-to-play platform. I'd love to see a legal argument if they start to force payments for previously free mods that have already been downloaded.

I don't believe in charging for previously free mods, and I'd be less likely to try a mod if I have to pay. Overall we end up with less experimentation and showcasing imo. We'll see what happens. I stopped playing 76 because I grew tired of the greed on Bethesda's part, because previous items once free were being charged a fee, or points.
@5226-p1e
@5226-p1e 10 месяцев назад
i think most of the payed mods are going to be coming from the mod authors and not so much from bethesda, i think bethesda want people to purchase their crap, but most people simply don't download them because most of the time they really suck in comparison to mod author created mods, so they will likely set up some kind of deal with the mod authors. just hopefully they don't try to cheat the mod authors like last time back in 2014 when they tried to do the payed mods thing and tried to take 90% of the profits made per mod sold. to me it would only make sense that bethesda only takes 10% off of the top of the profit earnings, and the mod author gets the rest, because there could potentially be thousands of mods being created each month, and all bethesda would have to do is sit back and watch the endless passive income flow into their system, but they will only get to that point when they do everything else just right.
@igavinwood
@igavinwood 10 месяцев назад
Re previously free mods. This is a dynamite area legally. I've yet to see any challenge but I can imagine a scenario where the like of Bethesda are challenged by gamers for content that had been free now locked behind a pay wall. It's the equivalent of giving someone a car, which they maintain and spend time and money to improve, then coming back and saying "That car we gave you is now going to cost you x". It's a cheap trick and I've seen it done in other areas where people get use to an "Free time limited offer", to entice it's take up and then slap the users with a fee once they are use to it. Hell - Adobe have been doing this for years.

@The-Skyking

Okay, so that's my confusion. They say it's background. Okay...got it. Does that mean the stuff for the bethesda site and all that jazz doesn't effect the game? Sure. The creation kit not being able to upload because the site changes? Got it. OR do they mean when they do all the site stuff then update Skyrim...That's why I said conflicting. @@The-Skyking so from my understanding, if it's just a background update it doesn't change the game version and is really just maintenance. It's pretty common in many games today for live updates to be rolled out making minor adjustments that don't change the game version. I could be wrong on that, but that is how I understand it to be. This "update" is nothing but more ways to get to your money annnddd I'll bet down the road they try to screw the modders too. Shops, here, shops, there, shops, shops, everywhere. Next "game" they release STILL won't have an FOV slider buuutttttt for the low, low PRICE.... I can't play Fallout 4 or Skyrim vanilla anymore. I can't UNSEE what I have seen. Bethesda have only added the option - on Bethesda's mod page only - for mod authors to charge money for mods they upload there. It does not mean that every mod auther will do that. Thank you for the heads up. As Bethesda is now part of MS I'm not in the slightest bit surprised about a market place. My suspicion is that MS will lead all the studios they own into a subscription service and eventually link it to their OS to recapture the monopoly they once had, but is being chipped away by the likes of Linux. I wonder if we will not see a backlash to the market place if they treat the mod authors as cash cows while dropping their own staff, especially in the QA departments. I would not pay for a mod that fixes a bug which the studio should patch. Nor would I pay for any mod that is less than DLC in size. It's simply not worth it when they end up with conflicts

I'm aware that Bethesda has tried this in the past, but now they are part of a mega corporation ,that having been allowed to purchase so many studios, I'm more concerned than before. The strategies that can be employed by such a massive number of studios in tandem with the OS to run the games on is scary. They really could change how games are played and paid for, due to being able to change the economy of the industry, making it harder for independents to compete. As far as I'm concerned the watchdogs of various countries have either been fast asleep, or worse, by allowing this massive hoarding of IP, studio income and access to sit within an org that is known to be anti-consumer (has been fined multiple times). MS really do now have a strangle hold on gaming, with only Sony competing in a like for like manner. Neither are good for the long term viability of the industry. There are a few bright lights, namely Nexus and Steam, but if either of them decide to use a pay-to-play or paywall model, in order to stay alive in a changing economy, then we are all in deep trouble.

Bethesda is a property of Microsoft, I doubt that Microsoft will give Sony PlayStation a gift especially after the Activision takeover affair. And Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 will never be released on PlayStation. As for mods (I take this opportunity to salute your excellent work) I consider that the philosophy of mods is free. Mods require players to get involved and may cause problems when using a game; they are not simple plug and play. Modders are involved but they are not professionals, they do it out of passion, otherwise you have to go work for a video game development studio and get paid for your work. Users are free to make donations. But it doesn't have to be an obligation. Players will boycott paid mods if it becomes mandatory. In addition, Bethesda will surely take money from transactions, from the work of modders, they do not create a mod marketplace out of altruism.

A few years later Nokia wasn't manufacturing phones at all, anymore, and is nothing but a shadow of its former self. How on Earth could that even happen? It's Microsoft magic. So, now that Bethesda is a part of Microsoft, all bets are off. All of them. It wouldn't even surprised me if three years from now Bethesda didn't exist anymore and all the popular Bethesda titles were terminated. Microsoft is capable of that, just believe it. Of course I hope it won't happen, but it's entirely possible.

Thank you for the compliment. I will say compared to skyrim as a base game, modders certainly seem like pros. And yes, bethesda will take a cut from paid creation club mods. Also, about sony. Playstation players can purchase creation club content. If bethesda now says ALL mods are treated under the creation club banner or any one can submit their mod to creation club, than sony SHOULD, in theory get the mods too.

Skyrim using more than 1 cpu core would be nice. I'll probably head back to modding Oldrim. It has better ENBs anyways.

Would it be possible to get a 1k architecture only mod for Xbox. Been using Skyland AIO forever. I really love your work, but I have noticed that I would be able to save space without your landscaping. It would be greatly appreciated.

i will NEVER pay for mods. this latest cash-grab by Bethesda validates my switching to the GOG versions of both SSE and FO4. they will never have to be updated either, so my load orders are safe as well.

If the update breaks SKSE, you can downgrade your exe to use the current skse and then update when skse is updated.

If it is the choice of the mod creator to decide if they want to charge for their mod or if the mod is free then I don't see a problem with that. These mods require work and I know that I like to get paid for any work that I do. The mod creators should also understand that charging for their mods will likely result in less people using their mods. Just as long as Bethesda does not force a price on mods and leaves it up to the mod creators then I see no problem.

To be completely fair, modding long ago reached a point of complexity that can equal making an entire game from scratch. If we're all willing to pay for a video game, we should be willing to pay for mods. I dont like it at all mind you, but personal feelings aside its really kind of outragous that so many of these mod authors have been doing it for free for so long.
@The-Skyking
@The-Skyking 10 месяцев назад
I agree. Mods really do add a lot and some are like a brand new game. I think tipping, donations, etc is a good trade.

@@The-Skyking You are a mod author right? For Skyland? Love Skyland by the way, staple in all my load orders. For a mod like yours, just as an example, I'd gladly pay for it as if it were a small add-on for the game. Not sure what you would see as a fair price for your time and effort, but as far as the finished product goes I'd say it's definitely worth 5 to 10 bucks if a full game is worth 60. I think it'd be more fair for you to get paid a set price per download rather than have to rely on the goodwill of people who enjoy your work.

Usually I install around 100 mods and it will easily cost more than game itself. Btw creator of the mod gets around 20% of revenue that's even worse than paying to creator

And how much will it cost for skyrim with 1000 mods? Or 2000 mods 1000$?

@@sywypl well if you had to pay for the mods in the first place, and weren't spoiled by the free labor we've all been getting for years, I think a lot about the modding scene would be different. Like, for example, I'm willing to bet that a lot more mods would be collaborative efforts between multiple authors to build mods with a wide range of changes. Were that more commonplace, I'm sure most wouldn't even need 2000+ mod load orders, but just a few large packages each for around 5 to 10 bucks. Even if that weren't the case, my point wasn't to say that every single mod in a 2000+ mod load order needs to be worth 5+ dollars, because I'm sure a ton of those mods would just end up being little patches, fixes, etc that just do one small thing per mod. In those cases I'm not really sure how the pricing should work out, but I would agree that tiny mods like that aren't worth that same 5+ as a bigger overhaul type mod that changes the appearance or mechanics of a large portion of the game, or the 10+ for mods that add whole DLCs or full games worth of content to the game. In the case of those tiny mods, maybe some sort of "build bundle" kinda thing could be introduced, where you can bundle together a bunch of tiny mods till it reaches that 5+ price range. Or maybe tiny mods should continue being free, and a certain threshold should be set between what does and doesnt qualify for payment. Either way, I don't know what Bethesda plans are, and I don't really keep up with this shit. To be honest I didn't even watch this video lol, I had it on as background noise and then commented because I found the subject worth talking about. So I'm not trying to defend Bethesda if the way their going about this is shitty or shady in some way. My only point here is that I think modding requires somebody's time and effort, and I don't know about you but I certainly don't work for fuckin free. They deserve to be paid for their services, and shouldn't have to rely on the good graces of someone who likes their mods, cares enough to look into the authors patreon, and has the money to spare, as the only payment for what can often amount to months or even years of work.

It's against the Bethesda TOS to solicit payment or offer payment. The nexus also has something similar. Tips and so forth isn't really included. Paywalls are frowned upon.
