I think continuing the spread sheet as a lease operator is the best option until you make the switch to Landstar. I Currently work for Knight as a company driver and I am in the process of financing a truck to lease to Landstar. you are the reason I went to Knight after the local company I worked for lost a big contract.

One thing you cannot account for as Leasing or an O/O is the Stress. The Stress of expenses or taking time off. Right now Company Driving is the best option

Nice video. I like the numbers, no bullshit. It is what it is. LoneStarTexasRanger runs for Landstar. He owns his current truck and is doing a lot better. He seems to be running a lot of heavy loads. I would check Landstar trailer closely and make sure the tires are good. I would copy the spreadsheet and adjust it for O/O. Hopefully you can get closer to 3 bucks a mile with Landstar.

Time to think about a getting an APU to help cut your idling time now that you own your truck. Thermo King has a tripartite and also there is one out there called Green APU. Just a thought for the future, take care.😊

Can’t wait for you Landstar Videos I was there till last year but I failed to secure an agent with consistent loads. The load board dried up and couldn’t get loads for more than 2.00 per mile. If you can get a trailer with lift gate it would give you unique advantage while their prices are cheap. Also talk to other Landstar BCO’s on how to get an agent with consistent freight it will make all the difference.

Good news for you and your business. A close friend worked for Landstar pulling a flatbed step deck and did a very good business until he gets retired a year ago. It cannot be worse than what you’re doing at Knights anyway. So good luck and let us know how thing are going on for you.

Congrats in purchasing the truck. Doing the math at 35% percent Landstar versus the 1.71 a mile Knight pays you would have to make an average of 2.30 or more to make more money not talking all the factors into consideration such as fuel discounts, which I have heard are pretty decent with Landstar. I would think you will probably be better off with Landstar, especially once the market start turning a bit in April.

i think you would be better on spot market 80 % landstar is 65% with lots of fees they nickle and dime the o/o and its a closed load board all the good fright never hits the board but good luck

With the fuel surcharge it comes out to about 69%. Landstar has very good freight hitting the board.

I paid it off early enough there was no balloon payment. Not sure when the balloon kicks in tbh. I did ask but the lease coordinator wasn't sure either. Its some sort of calculation. Seems like very few people actually end up buying out early so the lease coordinator wasn't sure.

Being you chose to to be your own bank to pay cash for your truck are you going to make payments to yourself since you invested in a depreciable asset otherwise in 3 you'll have a truck that is worth less and less cash on hand

Landstar is suffering from the same pain every other trucking company/brokerage company is suffering from. Low RPM. Best to fund a landstar agent to work with who has consist loads which pay more than the loadboards. In orientation ask how to work with other loadboards other than Landstar's.

It’s real important what you just said but it is a challenge to find decent agents with consistent loads. One advice I have is to talk to other Landstar BCO’s. Everyone is friendly and they WILL now someone to help you out with loads.

So, in conclusion you earned $6k more over 19 weeks leasing with Knight. But, what are health insurance, dental, 401k, and any other benefits worth? Cash is not the whole picture.

Are you going to drop and hook with landstar or lease your own trailer and get live loads? Reason I ask is it seems like equipment is relatively cheap right now. Curious what your plan is there.

Lease from them. You get access to their D/H along with their spot market as well. So overall more loads. But I did consider buying a trailer given the prices...

Pay percentage rather than by the mile. Dispatch yourself. Large freight base. Wherever the best loads are...

I paid off the truck in full. Now that I have paid it off I am no longer leasing the truck. I own it. Same idea as a car lease from a car dealership. Leased a car at first... Then later paid it off...
