Yeah, you don't "go on a diet". You change your diet. As you say, it needs to be a permanent change to be effective. I haven't been able to lose too much of my excess weight, (only about 20 pounds) but all my other numbers are getting better. My type II diabetes is completely under control with diet alone. Because of the changes to my diet, I was able to avoid going on medications. I'm also treating my sleep apnea with an APAP machine. Then I go to foot doctor regularly and get a full diabetic eye exam once a year. So, while losing the excess weight can help, you also need to treat any weight related health problems while you are doing to it to stay in the best of health.
