Its very simple. A movie lover watches a film to pass the time, but a cinephile watches it to fill their time.

It may be optimal to somehow be both - letting your self into the process of going to a movie theater, allow your self to get "carried away" by the film itself. Then to research further, review both the film and your own interaction with it.

I like and appreciate defining cinephiles as those who "have more to say about the film and a filmmaker" on an artisitc and analytical level. Cinephiles are those who want to not only enjoy a film on a superficial level, but to deepen that love by understanding it on an artistic level and in order to discern its quality. If you enjoy analyzing and dissecting a film as much as you enjoy the experience of going to, watching and being entertained by a film on a superficial level, you are a cinephile. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I have a thought and would like to hear people's thoughts, but I've never liked the idea of defining who is and is not primarily on the basis of what films you have or haven't seen at any given point in time. Not only does that convey an air of snooty, arrogant elitism, but nobody has neither seen all of the same movies nor appreciates and understands each and every one of them in exactly the same way and on exactly the same level because we are all different people with different tastes at different points in life. You're a cinephile because your foundation is that you love movies, and you want to appreciate them and understand that appreciation on a deeper, more informed level. While I think there is obviously merit in saying that seeing certain films will give you a greater appreciation of its place in the history of film, its place in the advancement and evolution of film as an artform and its place in a particular director's filmography, I don't necessarily believe that someone is required to have seen an arbitrarily selected list of a specific number or kind of movie as a kind of threshold you have to cross in order to accurately call yourself a cinephile and that you have finally "arrived" after having crossing that imaginary threshold. If the only reason you're watching a particular film is because of some obligatory sense that "this is what cinephiles are supposed to do," and not because you actually want to see the film and enjoy (or at least value) the experience of watching it, it fundamentally defeats the purpose of why you became or aspired to be a cinephile in the first place, the why being your love of movies as an artform. If there's no "philia" in being a cinephile, there's no point in what you are doing.

I'm a cinephile and I stand by Back to the Future 2 being better than the 1st, might just be the reverse nostalgia of looking into the future at the time, but to me it had most of the best parts from the first one only with so, so much more to explore in it's universe
@skyz6239
@skyz6239 4 года назад
im both. i love the process of going to the cinema and i love being totally immersed in a good film almost like an escape from reality, i love being moved, films that make me feel all sorts of emotion, i will only further research a movie if it really intrigued me and then ill appreciate the film so much more because of all its intricacies but i dont like to study a film too much or over analyze it because it ruins the fun for me.. and i will never go see a big budget blockbuster movie which are most often action/adventure because they just dont interest me. so yea its not a black and white thing.

So enjoy an epic double feature of “El cid” and “Fall of the Roman Empire” or have an A.I.P festival festival but enjoy the experience “Got film?”

Film makers do not have to be cinephile, cinematic language is produced and comes from the materials, knowing others works need not effect you. The New Wave were some cinephile they watched Howard Hawks 100 times over then "had learned" , a real cinephile also not only is studing what he watches he watches many many movies and some over and over.

Here’s the thing, because Of Quarantine I totally became that guy who analyzes every part of a movie that I watch, at first it was me exploring other genres and studios, like I got really into A24. But it turned into just me going on this chain and junction that was just tiresome, so now while I do still like to review and analyze a movie, a lend more into just enjoying it having fun with my friends and family, so I don’t really mind stupid movies, I’ll appreciate the entertainment factor of it, and for Movies that are more smart and bla bla bla, I’ll still analyze it, but not as detailed or criticize it as much

As Jack alluded to its also a matter of taste and discernment. I don't think a true cinephile haggles over the Back to the Future movies, (that's for Movie lovers.) A true Cinephile is more apt to be ranking Andre Tarkovsky's best works 1-7, or going to the Film Forum screenings of Kenneth Anger films, then top it off a Pasolini retrospective (Passion of St. Mathew) at MoMA. In fact, there many more Movie lovers than true Cinephiles. The Movie lover has Netflix, the Cinephile, Fandor.
@LostUtopiaFilms
@LostUtopiaFilms 7 лет назад
I see this point of view a lot in the film community, but imo I'd have to disagree. I don't think a "true" cinephile puts themselves above watching or speaking about a popcorn movie like Back to the Future. I believe a cinephile is a lover of cinema that is able to speak passionately and deeply about why they love films from their structure, to direction, lighting, etc., whether it be a new blockbuster or a Terrence Malick film. Only focusing deeply on one type of genre (which I usually see to be classic films among traditional cinephiles), is a big disservice in my opinion because you're not seeing or thinking about all that cinema has to offer. You need to be able to watch the high and lows. For me, a movie lover is someone that watches a movie on a surface level and thinks nothing of it afterward. A cinephile is someone that is able to watch that same movie and begin picking it at extensively and thinking about it deeply for sometimes years after it's release. I think obsession is the difference is the big line between the two.
@jfa42
@jfa42 7 лет назад
I'm sorry my friend, you've got it all wrong here. 'Cause the simple truth of the matter is while that film's like Back to the Future are fun & entertaining (agreed the better of it's kind) but doesn't quite frankly offer anywhere near the substance to ponder/haggle/wonder/analyze etc. that say Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev does for instance. A chef doesn't wonder or marvel of the substance of a Big Mac... they just don't! I love me a Chicago style hot dog but I'm 'sposed to lump it in w/ a good bouillabaisse? Ummm, no! To suggest every film is the same and should be given the same weight and merit is obviously absurd. I should think the same way I do about Vin Deisel's Xander Cage movie as say Xavier Dolan's new film or new Herzog doc is a laughable concept. People constantly try to suggest that but it's wrong. People are constantly denigrating cinema as an art form this way. I guess Jackie Susan's Rock Star should be held in the same way one regards Philip Roth's American Pastoral or Updike's The Centaur? I don't think so. Morzart & Brittany Spears in the same breath?
