Just dug my 87 VT700c out of the shed. One carb rebuild later and a good old tank cleaning and she runs great. Master/slave cylinder rebuild next and some tires, since I haven't driven it in over 20 years. 34k original miles.

My grandpa told me that my bike idles at low rpm. I thought he was talking nonsense. But I increased RPM because he was mechanic when he was young. Glad I did, Thanks for a vid. Great sense of humor you got there. :D

The same lack of oil to the "top" [heads at the same elevation as the crank] end happens with the old BMW airheads. There used to be a strange fetish among airhead owners to get the idle as low as possible. Because of the opposed cylinders and a heavy flywheel they would still run pretty smoothly at 800 rpm. At that slow rate, oil pressure was low and the big oil users like bearings used all the pressure before any oil could get to the "top" end or the timing chain. Mysterious valve train and timing chain damage happened. So the low idle problem is more about crank and cam bearings using all the oil rather than, as in the case of the Shadow, the heads being way above the oil pump. [Elevation seems to really make no difference; it's all about oil volume]. Nice video, Hoss!

Duuuuude! This is a great help. The only time I sent my shadow 600, my first motorcycle, to a "professional" mechanic for a fork seals change and a carburetor cleaning, when I picked it up (after almost 3 months) he said "how do you like it to sound ?kinda HD" and he lowered down the idle to a "pop po po pop", a bit more and the bike stops.

Dude, that's the best description of the difference between a dual and single pin crank I've seen. 👍 My Fury 1300 and my wife's 2002 Spirit 750 are single pin cranks but Honda is smart enough to balance them. They sound good, but they don't shake-rattle-and... fall the fk apart.

I'm not certain but the method of setting the idle should work the same!! Check the service manual for idle speed!

Thanks for the video I’m a new shadow 750 aero owner. It has a tach and I’m guilty of dropping the idle for the sound. That will no longer be the case. Bringing it up to proper idle speed asap.

Hey Brother I love your videos. My favorite bike videos by far and possibly my favorite RU-vidr of all time. Just got my 1st real bike. It's a 99 Honda Shadow ACE. Im just beginning to go over it piece by piece and learning as much as I can about it as I go... I'd love to know as much about it as possible. I bought an immaculate 2002 VTX 1800R last year, I wanted a sabre 1100 but the VTX was a bargain. The build quality of the Honda is excellent. Former 3-time big twin shovelhead owner and never going back to H-D.

There are a few people who turn the idle down around 800-900 rpm safely on a dual pin crank, BUT they are running a electric oil pump.

TJ BRUTAL CUSTOMS - Do Fun Sh*t 101 I would watch it... Just for the comedic sarcastic TJ... hehe I have never used a tachometer on my bike, but I do use the neutral light to adjust the idle speed. When I rev, and the light gets brighter, I adjust the idle speed up until the light stays bright, even at idle.

Id always used the factory suggestion of idle in 1st gear on a flat surface = 6+mph, and err on the side of a faster idle for engine health

Very helpful video thanks. I need some advices if someone there. I buy short straight pipes with db killers. It sounds great on iddle, but When decelerating, it makes a horrible sound like a wet pan, a leaking toilet sound.. 😅 I watched a lot of videos with these style of exhausts, I recognize the same sound that resonates, and each video never shows the 600 Shadow while driving.. If someone can help, it would be so nice, else, back to the original exhausts.. A French fan. Thanks Tjbc!

Is this mostly a problem in California heat? Ive built many engines, car and bike and I get oil to the top of the engine cranking over with the starter which is obviously a much lower rpm than any idle speed.

I have 1997 Honda shadow 1100 replace coil packs, spark park, wires and spark plug now not getting spark plugs to the front right of the motor and it’s backfiring right at first start multiple times after idles when it’s warming up giving it gas it doesn’t backfire when I use the choke after it warms up and idles down it backfires multiple times then once to try to cut off, but if I put it back on choke it will run need help please

You're not paying them for what they do. You're paying them for all their experience and the ability to do the job correctly and their ability to address anything that comes up along the way. You're paying them for having the correct tools to do a job and the knowledge how to use those tools. But a maintenance video might be a good idea!

I moved to Las Vegas a year ago and it’s like a crazy difference in pricing from local shops. I started doing my own maintenance but I know here’s more things that mechanics do that I don’t know about and I would appreciate the hell out of a maintenance video. Thank you guys!

One shadow owner and one harley dyna about to become a Harleyless 2nd shadow owner here. The sound? How about just not wanting to have a piece of machinery that is antiquated design, and sounds like it? The entire world of machinery has learned, vibration is not healthy for equipment. Rough doesn't mean better, it means higher maintenance cost and earlier failure. Tired of both. Getting better engineered equipment. Whats wrong with that? Just cause Harley owners want to say its better doesn't mean its so.
