Biggest Mistake In Skateboarding

Whats up guys? Today we are gonna talk about the biggest mistake in skateboarding. Just keep in mind before i start this video, there are really no mistakes, every choice you make can lead to you learning and its just a part of your path so don't really look at it that way, Im just sharing with you a mistake that i made so you dont make the same one. Ive been skateboarding for almost 20 years and ive seen alot of people succeed at skateboarding and alot of people quit skateboarding and to me this is the one behavior that really separates those two.
So that behavior is being results oriented. Let me explain. When i would go and learn a trick all i would be thinking about was accomplishing the trick, as fast as i could, just getting it done. That mentality has held me back from so much. So instead of mastering the process, and falling in love with the learning process itself i would just no matter what die hard skip steps and just try to accomplish the trick. and what that does is leave the foundation not strong.
So let me give you an example. My younger cousin, he learned every single trick, he would master it on flatground, one step at a time. Nollie kickflip learn it til he got it every single try, perfect technique, then he would learn nollie noseslides every single try, then he would learn nollie flip noseslide on the handrail every single try and the way i would approach it would be " i wanna do nollie flip noseslides on the handrail, just try it 200 times until i eventually land one that doesnt look that great most likely and then be like alright im done, i did it,
Where that leaves you is you dont have those tools to apply, you dont have the nollie noseslide to apply to other tricks and spots. Each individual trick, you dont have that skill mastered to apply in all differant situations. So its really a steady growth technique where you master the procedure, the process, you really focus on that and stop trying to get somewhere fast because that was my biggest mistake. I wouldnt take the time and see the amazingness of the process, i would just try to rush and get it done the best i can, get it done right away.
Now looking back i realize you werent learning the skills properly and not setting yourself up for success just in gerneral. This can apply to all theories in life, all behaviors, i think this runs true.
If you try to skip steps and just get right to the top eventually just kind of crumbles. Theres nothing on the base holding it up. Dont beat yourself up about it, some people learn differently and have different habits and this is just something to help you become conscious of it if its something you do because i know it was something that held me back.

id say the biggest mistake in skateboarding is not enjoying yourself while doing it.

Chad I do the exact same thing. I have never been one to spend too much time on one trick. I'm impatient and like the instant gratification of landing things and if I don't have something in ten tries or less I tend to move on. As a result of this I haven't really learned any new tricks since my early 20's and I am 36 now. Nowadays I spend more time keeping my tricks or re-learning ones I had back in the day. Nice video. I just watched your switch blunt video and might work on them soon.

I have the same problem I loved vert so much I guess I should say transition now lol that I never really played much attention to learning new tricks other than just the basic vert 5050 rock fake fakie all the basics now I'm 25 and feel like I literally know nothing about skateboarding. Been trying to land this gap for a few days coming out on a angled ollie could of done it no problem at 16 lol just for the life of me man gave up again last night bout to go out there again lol

My mistake learning to skate growing up in the 90s era was putting the basics on the shelf and just focusing on learning tech tricks. Back then, I focused more on street skating, but never really put the effort into learning mini ramp. I could pop switch frontside flips out of the transition, but couldn't even do an axle stall. It's been 15 years since i last touched a Skateboard. I'm 40 now. Finally own a house and a decent size backyard. I just finished building a mini ramp a couple weeks ago. This time around, i'm just going to enjoy the learning process, rather than rush into learning the hardest latest tricks the pros are doing.

Thank you sir....wise soul you are. You inspired me to learn a new mini ramp trick every Saturday, and it’s been amazing. At 43, I feel like I’m 14 again. Fantastic.

Great advice. I started skating at 8 years old For the love of it by 18 all I cared about was a sponsorship which I never attained. At 23 shattered my wrist and quit until this year age 33. Fell in love with the process again.

Wow this week's volumes I feel the same way that I want to accomplish a trick so badly and learn it so quickly that you tend to forget the enjoyment of the process of learning it

100 percent true.. I stopped skating years ago out of frustration due to having unrealistic goals and seeing no progress as a result. I am back skating now and keep working on new tricks but instead of having one big trick in my mind I have 10 smaller but achievable ones. I am enjoying skating a lot more now I wish i'd done before :) And by the way thanks Chad so much for all those great vids, you have a gift for teaching!

Hey Chad, I just came across your channel and I gotta say.... it's awesome! I don't understand why I didn't find you sooner, but better late than never I guess. Anyway, your tips and instruction is 2nd to none. I'm always trying to find better ways to progress in this wonderful world os skateboarding. I'm 41 and have been skateboarding, off and on, since I was a kid. Transition has always beed my first love and your mini ramp tips are perfect for me. I guess what I'm trying to say is ......... Thank You! Great channel, and I look forward to more video's from you. Take care, and skate safe.

I love when kids out there are exploring the process and breaking down a trick until they can do it. I tell them that it builds a thought process that they can apply to any growth situation in the future. They learn that repetition is sometimes necessary to have a breakthrough. They learn the this-before-that foundational hierarchy. So if it’s learning a new language or prototyping a new cookie recipe, they don’t give up, they honestly evaluate progress and reach solid milestones and earn repeatability.

Baby steps yes. Another great tip is when you're learning a new trick, take the time to do other tricks as well so you stay fluid. Like if you're learning to boardslide the entire rail, stick some clean 180's flat ground, switch and regular. STAY LOOSE. Then add everything up that you have to do for your trick. Also, wear pads sometimes. They're constricting, but not being afraid to fall and break your wrist really opens doors.

Thank you Chad I have been skating for a while but I've only in the last year I have felt like im slowly getting it back. This talk made a lot more sense now. I skate now with my kids and watching them progress faster than I did at there age having you're tutorial makes it bit easier to show how from another perspective.

Very good advice. Skating is also a sport that penalises you so much of you go beyond your limits, specially in the form of injuries. So i feel you need to have a really good sense of your confort zone and the little bit but not to far a way from it that allows you to progress smoothly.

Chad this video really resonated with me... I didn't get that when i was younger. but i recently started skateboarding again and started a youtube channel... after years of other things and coming back to it.. i really treat it more like you talked about and im progressing so much faster nowadays. Kids really need this talk.. wish i had it 10 years ago.. but for me it was with age comes wisdom

Dude I just found out about your channel and I really like your videos. I used to skate but because of the competition mindset I had back then with my friends I did the exact same thing, I rushed my way to land tricks and did not enjoy the process of learning, actually I started to hate it because so many dudes were rockin' harder, more complex tricks it just made me feel bad with myself. So anyways, I just also saw your video on hardflips at age of 33 and man such an inspiration I'm going to take my board again and try to get back on the game

I used to be obsessed with learning kickflip, and almost quit 'cause I wasn't learning it. Then I just started to cruise with my board to all places in town, and made friends with other skaters. Been hanging out with my skater friends all summer long and learning nice tricks. Got a little too excited and twisted my ankle but thanks to that I've improved my switch game. Absolutely enjoy every time I skate. Unfortunately my pal broke his arm today skating and I wasn't even there. It sucks that he can't skate with me in awhile.

Well said. I'm 36 and have been skating for over 26 years, and i.m.o the "mistake" seems to be the norm for the majority of the new demographic of skaters. It seems like the biggest difference(on average) is between the type of person that was drawn to skating when I started, and the types that are drawn to it today. We(most of "us") hated image/trend whores, and shunned trends(even ones we birthed) while today, trend whores are the exact types that are drawn to it...well, drawn to the image attached to it.(Disclaimer:The majority of kids are trend whores by default, and you can't belittle them yet because they don't have the tools necessary to grasp the implications yet) We(skaters of yesteryear) love the feel of skating(feeling of freedom) and have no issues with busting our asses on a ten set all alone with no camera in sight, while the puppets love the feel of being labeled a skater and the image that solidifies said label. I'm not saying they're bad people, just that they're pretty much the polar opposite of the character types that held skating close to their heart when I was a kid. I almost became one of the guilty when skating actually got "cool" in my area in 1999(Nova Scotia Canada is far behind the modern skate scene...and every other scene) because I was basing my decision to stop skating(as much...I could never quit) on the fact that the people I considered my enemies were being drawn to it, but quickly realized that I was basing my judgment on what's cool just like the puppets were.
