Do not thin your seedlings, double your seedlings instead! You often get more than one seedlings per cell, instead of cutting the seedlings and thinning the seedlings, you can pull the seedlings and then transplant the bareroot seedlings to create more seedlings. This way you can double or triple your seedlings

Who is going to try this? Who has done this and got a lot more seedlings? You can always give extra seedlings to your family and friends!

You don't even need cell trays Jag! I just use regular big trays to grow all kinds of seedlings for mass planting. You can even wash the roots, separate and transplant them. It will grow fantastically!

I am a beg. gardener in zone 5 and I love watching your fact and science based lectures and demonstrations. Your message is golden and will hopefully spread like wildfire. I appreciate all your hard work and productions. Thank you for teaching me and other people how to grow food.

You can separate them at any stage by removing the entire cell and dunking in water gently. The soil will wash away leaving the roots. Tease apart the plants and replant. In this way, the roots are not torn and you can do it at any stage. With this technique, you can mass plant cells/pots. You can overplant 6 or 8 plants in those size cells.

For sure it's too-many-seedlings season!! Some seedlings I just broadcast in a Dixie cup and then separate out 50 into cells!

This makes more sense than to take them out and throw them away. Learned something new from your videos all the time

Jag, I can't imagine snipping off seedlings and discarding them! And thanks to you, I now know the proper time in which to transplant them.

Thank you so much for this! It breaks my heart when I see people destroying a perfectly good start just because it isn't the biggest and I think of all of the potentially wasted food that could have come from it had it only been given a chance. If you have to buy them (like for a new variety), seeds are getting more and more expensive. You can always gift any spares for which you're out of room to someone and potentially help feed them and, in turn, anyone with whom they share their harvest.

Very helpful: I didn't know that about the correct time being when they have exactly two sets of leaves. Thanks, Jag.

I will certainly keep this in mind. I have some lavender and lemon balm I might have done a little too far with, but I still might give it a try anyway 👊🏻🌻👊🏻

How brilliant! I was just about to start snipping, and it always makes me want to cry to kill and discard a healthy plant! What a great alternative!

I've honestly separated seedlings out when they have as many as 3 and 4 sets of leaves and potted them up--I've done it with probably 150 just this year--and they do fine. Those are some pretty leggy seedlings there, though....

Thank you Jag, good info. However most people plant as many seeds as they have room to grow. If they took all those extra seedlings and kept them by planting up they wouldn't have any extra space in their garden to grow them. But I agree with you, we should always grow extras just in case there's a failure for any reason, ( i.e. skunks, snails, birds).

Maybe extra seedlings can be shared with others. Win-win!

I pot my extra seedlings and once I've planted mine and shared with family, I put the extras on my lawn with a sign "free plants". They always find homes and I've never had anyone just take all, they only take a couple.

Hi Will tomatoes be affected all season if they get too cold. Mine were in an unheated greenhouse on a heat matt covered with a plastic cover, and it got down to 21 degrees. They look okay but...

How do you get them to come out of those little container so easy?Mind just get stuck in there. Sometimes, I have to rip the little container apart on the side to get them out. What am I doing wrong?

I noticed the extra seedlings were potted in deeper . Does this work with any seedling? Or just tomatoes that root along their whole stem? Thanks Jag
@DaisyCreekFarms

It works with any seedlings to have moisture, the top dries out first.
@earthsystem
@earthsystem 4 месяца назад
Warning:: Excess seedlings you have to give to friends & strangers!!! I separate 'em when the soil's barely damp, easy to tease/shake apart the roots-if soil is wet, the roots get injured more easily.
