What a beautiful object. Who would have thought such a (theoretically) functional piece of electronics could be so aesthetically pleasing! Expensive, yes, but not really when you see the work and thought that's gone into it. I've built Nixie clocks using the small Russian tubes as well as the huge 4 inch Burroughs 7971. My initial design was all TTL IC's and transistor drivers but the later revisions use a Raspberry Pi Zero for programmable functions. I first saw nixi tubes in the early 1970's on early digital weighing scales that my father used to repair. They were made in pre-multiprocessor days so all the 'processing' was analogue and dedicated logic chips (and/or/nand/xor etc) to achieve the analogue to digital conversion. The nixi's were promoted as 'natural appearing' digits rather than the 'stylized' 7 segment displays that were becoming popular. The scales were fiendishly expensive so component level servicing and trouble shooting was worthwhile. I last serviced one of them in the early 1990's. The predecessor to nixi's were 'decatron' tubes. Perhaps Techmoan could review something that uses those. PS: The price of this clock is outrageous; how can they market so much handcrafted work for that small amount?
@Planetary13
@Planetary13 Год назад
Cool do you know what brand that scale was?
@anthonyjackson280
@anthonyjackson280 Год назад
@@Planetary13 that is asking a lot from memory. i think, perhaps Doric. It was a 2 piece aluminum housing about 8" wide, 3 high and about 20 deep. There were 3 print boards plugged into the mother board. The analogue amplifier was discrete FETs with loads of shielding. The A to D was discrete components that used dual ramp integration. Cascaded decade counters did the digital conversion and display driving. Accuracy was 1 in 2000 and conversion rate about 3/sec. In order to service it we had to make extension cables for all the header pins/plugs that held the boards together. There were optional boards for push button zero (standard was an analogue 10 turn pt) and a printer driver.

I do love the orange glow of Nixie tubes, but as a child of the 80s I have a lot more nostalgia for VFD and LED clocks. Nixie tubes are more from the 50s-60s, and other similar displays with that kind of orange glow such as the Panaplex or Numitron were more a product of the 70s and didn't really last long on the market in the 80s. I never even saw Panaplex or Numitron until very recently on RU-vid, let alone a Nixie tube outside of movies, they really weren't common here in Australia. For that reason I don't have any nostalgia for them compared to VFD or LED clocks. I don't have a need for one right now, but if I do get another clock, it will be an LED clock, and it will be one that I design and build myself using vintage 7 segment LED displays. I've got my eye on some larger ones which I believe are from the late 70s, but they're pretty pricey since they're from the US America, and the exchange rate combined with the cost of shipping is pretty brutal right now. Don't get me wrong, Nixie tubes look nice, but it's the nostalgia that draws me to VFD and LED displays.

It's a clock. Just a bloody clock! And what a stunningly gorgeous clock it is! 👍 That is fabulous! What amazing craftsmanship they have, and when you consider the hell that their country is going through right now, it's amazing that these things are still able to be produced! I love it, and want one.... sadly my bank account doesn't agree with me though.... 😞

Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing that. Refreshing to see incredible craftsmanship. Like flip clocks, nixies are a fun way to show the time. Something soothing about them. Not the usual LCD/LED.

That's a very nice clock. Sounds expensive at first, but if you think about it, all handmade, in very low volume etc, it might not be that expensive at all. Those tubes are beautiful.
@anon7631
@anon7631 Год назад
When you think about how expensive clocks can get, is it really that expensive at all? I mean, generally when people think of high-end clocks they picture analog faces, gears, and pendulums, but there's no reason it needs to be that way, and this is a fraction of the price some of those can go for.

What a wonderful object. I'm the same regarding clocks. I've always been fascinated with them and have various types of clocks dotted around my home, from an old flip clock that came out of a bank to a 1930s granddaughter clock, various MSF signal controlled clocks, a back-lit Tiffany stained glass one... there's just something lovely and reassuring about clocks. (Same with lamps, especially old oil and gas lamps - I have way more than I really have space for, and like clocks, seem to be unable to resist a vintage bargain.) I do have other 'clutter', mostly ocean liner ephemera and models, but also maps, which I suppose are similarly obsolete in the age of Google Earth but are still nice things to have around. Yes, I am autistic as all nevermind (and in hindsight, surprised it took until the age of 33 to figure that out and get diagnosed!)

Ooh, lovely. The pins on the tubes remind me of the wall connector on my grandparents' old telephone when I was a kid, which dated back to before the adoption of modular plugs. (The phone, not my childhood. I'm old, but not _that_ old. :) Random fun fact: I was watching a video on the Battleship _New Jersey_ Museum's channel the other day, and one of the suggestions was another BNJ video about the battleship's "Nixie room". I had idyllic visions of a room somewhere near the Combat Information Center that was full of nixie tube readouts for something, but it turns out "Nixie" is also the code name for a towed torpedo decoy, for the use of which there was a room at the very back of the ship with doors to throw the decoys out of and winches to pull them back in. Disappointing. :)

That really is a thing of beauty. I am really jealous. I can fully relate to you feelings about objects such as these. I wear an automatic mechanical watch with a clear back and really enjoy having something with such incredible engineering on my wrist. As the the price of the Nixie clock, well it’s a fair bit cheaper that my watch, so perhaps it’s not such a big of an extravagance as it might first seem. 🤭

I've noticed that with a couple of tech channels I follow. As their viewership goes up (and assumedly income) the price tags on the items they feature or review go up. Really cool stuff but not many people can budget $1600 for a clock.
@budgetguitaristcom

Ditto. If we are being extremely honest, um, I don't know anyone who would drop $1,600 on a clock. This is not a middle class item - it's for the rich. Which ain't most of us. I still love this channel, though.
