Join us for a scenic motorcycle ride along Wyoming's Medicine Wheel Passage. HIghway 14a in the Bighorn Mountains.
It is about a 105 miles round trip from Lovell Wyoming to Burgess Junction and back to Lovell.
The scenery is breathtaking as Highway 14a rises sharply from the Bighorn Basin to the high alpine meadows. The road up can be rough most of the time. It seems that it is a never ending battle to keep the shifting road in travel condition.
The Medicine Wheel Passage Scenic Byway is the northernmost route across the Bighorn National Forest in the Big Horn Mountains. The 27 miles of this Scenic Byway run nearly the length of U.S. 14A, ending at the western edge of the Bighorn National Forest. Just to the west of the boundary are the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area and the nearby town of Lovell. On the east end is Burgess Junction, where the Scenic Byway merges with U.S. 14 and becomes the Big Horn Scenic Byway. This two-lane paved highway follows one of the highest routes in the state. The steep, winding road has a 10-percent grade. . A high point (literally) along the route is the 9,430-foot view looking southwesterly into the Big Horn Basin thousands of feet below. Mountain peaks tower above 13,000 feet in this high-altitude neighborhood. The rapid change in elevation along the Byway provides a variety of habitat types.

Great ride! Your channel is growing and you deserve a larger audience. I have seen this pattern before with other channels. Just takes one video shared by the right people in the right place and boom, the sky’s the limit. Congrats! Ps. Last summer when my wife and I were in this area, we saw 2 moose in the area where video was at 20:30.

The Bighorn Mountains were my first taste of the western mountains as a teenager in the 80's. We took a 4 week road trip and entered the Big Horns from the Sheridan, Wyoming side. We tent camped at Lake Sibley which is right on the side of Hwy 14A. It was July and the first morning we woke up to 28 degree temps and were nearly frozen. I remember taking a very cold bucket bath with water from the camp ground well pump. Burrrr! It was an eye opener for sure....lol...The Bighorns are not as crowded as other areas in the summer.....Don't tell too many people about our secret spot Lori...lol

It is an awesome place. They got a few inches of snow that other day and have shut down a number of the off road trails due to extreme muddy conditions. Quite a few years ago we got snowed on in August coming back from Sturgis. Always be ready for cold wintery weather up there. 🙂 one of the best parts about the bighorns is the lack of people. You are right, I need to keep it more quiet. 🤫 I made the mistake of going into YNP last week. it was a madhouse. I never want to go back. 😬

@@loristravels Yellowstone in the summer sadly has become the vacation destination of the social media selfie clan. They have total disregard for the land and the wildlife while in pursuit of getting a photo or video for a social media post.😒

@@carbonking53 I agree. I took a road trip through the "park" on the 22nd of June, It was unpleasant. I wish I would have gone into the Bighorns instead. A lot of the people do not appreciate what Yellowstone is all about. I doubt they even enjoy the the scenery for more than background for a selfie. I feel sometimes that I am promoting the death of the very areas that I love. I'm not in it for the subscribers or how many views I get. I just wanted to share the beauty. But now I think that I may be part of the problem. Something to ponder for sure. 🤔

Love It!! Could you offer your suggestion please......Next month (coming from Boston) we're leaving Cody in the morning and going Chief Joseph, to Beartooth to Red Lodge, and then coming down to Lovell. From there, wondering if we should head out Alt 14 to Burgess Junction or go South on 314 to Greybull and go through Shell Canyon over the Big Horn to Sheridan and then on to Buffalo or Gillette that way? We COULD try to do all, heading out of Burgess and down and over to Greybull and then down to Hyattville and over Rte 16 to Buffalo, but that's about 8 hours riding time with not much time to stop and smell the coffee. I know last year Shell area was rough road but I THINK it's been paved over now? Love your videos, thank you very much

HI. Sound like you have a fun trip planned. You really can’t go wrong with whichever route you choose through the Bighorns. I think that time may be a factor in deciding which way you want to take. The route you state shows 406 miles and 8 hours of driving. Realistically that ride will take you about 10-12 hours or longer depending on stops. From Cody to Red Lodge will take about 4-5 hours with minimal stops. From Cody to the Intersection of hwy 296 & Hwy 212 -- 1 ½ to 2 hours. Hwy 212 Beartooth highway to Red Lodge is a good -- 3-4 hours. Depending on stops. ((I have done the stretch from the intersection of Chief joseph and Hwy 212 Beartooth highway in 2 hours in the jeep with no stopping and no traffic, travelling at a pretty good clip but that has been my best time.)) From Red Lodge to Lovell is about 1 hour 20 mins. From Lovell to Burgess is about an hour. At Burgess or at Lovell it might be a good idea to access your time. Burgess to Sheridan through Dayton is a really pretty ride. About 2 hours to Buffalo from there Burgess to Greybull to Buffalo about 3 ½ hours We don’t stop a lot on our rides so these times are what we have experienced with minimal stopping. On the steep passes from Lovell, Dayton, Shell or Cloud Peak there may be slow moving traffic that may slow your ride. Also consider road construction delays of 20-30 minutes. From personal experience on the reality of google maps time frame. I recently took a drive from Red Lodge to Cooke city - Yellowstone Park - Dunraven pass- Fishing bridge - Pahaska Tepee - Cody and then back to Red Lodge as being 6 hours for 271 miles. My reality, driving my Jeep with very few stops and no popular attractions took me 14 hours. And I am familiar with the area. But with traffic, construction, wildlife jams and the occasional pit stop it made for a long day, even with the luxury of driving. I hope this helps with your timeline and planning your route. Be safe on your ride and have an amazing time.

@@loristravels Thank you VERY much. As much as we'd love to see everything, I think taking time to "smell the roses", so we'll forgo trying to do everything and go over thru the Greybull/Shell route, OR take an extra day and go over one way, and back around the other and through again. I've had the whole group, all 3 watch you videos and everyone is excited because of them. Thanks again.

@@mrfoomutt I am glad you will take your time to enjoy the area. It always takes longer on some of these roads than one would think. Thank you for spreading the word and watching the videos. It means a lot. Be safe and enjoy your ride.
