I was at this game sitting on the first baseline a few rows back so I had an almost perfect view of this home run and it was nuke. We have McGwire a standing ovation. Also to note, he was hitting balls off the scoreboard consecutively in batting practice.

went to this game with my buddy who lived in Cleveland at the time. the ball hit a pillar on the left side of the scoreboard and bounced back in. it would've left the park on the fly if it didn't hit, and landed in Lake Erie, Lol

The 461 foot HR in this video was off Dave Burba on June 25, 1998 (Indians won 8 to 2). McGwire also hit a 433 foot HR off Jaret Wright the day before, on June 24, 1998 (Indians won 14 to 3).

Someone measured that wrong. No way this is under 480 and might be 500.

@@rufuspipemos -- The angle of flight of the ball determines how far it goes, along with the initial velocity. Out of a cannon a 45 degree angle is supposed to give you the optimum distance. So, it was probably at an angle greater than 45% on its trajectory because it went so high.

@@ORagnar , of course you are correct on all counts. But garbage in-garbage out. The same calculations two year ago had Trout hitting a 524 foot home run at Angel stadium that did not even go 450. That home run is on RU-vid. The data is not always right and thus the final result is not always right.

Mac hit the budweiser sign and that was just shy of 500. this one (i was at the game) hit halfway up the pillar on the side of the scoreboard. I dunno, draw a line across, it's above the b/weiser sign. gotta be at least 520 ft.

There’s an urban legend going around Cleveland that when they were replacing the scoreboard in the mid 2000s, they found a dent in the metal right around the area where McGuire hit that home run
