Gravel riding continues to capture the imagination of cyclists everywhere. And new gravel bikes are arriving in Australian shops once again (after a couple of years when availability had been impacted by the pandemic).
Trek recently offered RIDE Media the chance to "review a bike" - something that I've been doing for over 25 years, but also something that has been difficult while supply chain issues impact the market.
I jumped at the chance and eventually a box arrived.
This is part one of a Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 review. There is a plan for my riding adventures... so stay tuned. (I'll be riding soon... but, alas, there's also quite a bit of work to do in the office, so please be patient.)
Big thanks to ‘Beej’ and the guys at Park Bikes for lending a hand with the unboxing.
- Rob

It took a long time but the review series for this Checkpoint ALR5 has (finally) resumed. You can find a few more videos about the bike on RIDE Media's channel, starting with this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dkipwh4Xjpo.html - Rob

I'm now 6 months in with a 2021 ALR5 and love it. Have completed many gravel rides, 180 km around most of the bay in Melbourne , another 130 around the freeway's / city bike paths, and this week swapped out the nobbly 40's for GP5000 x 25mm for some road riding whilst my road bike is out of action. They are such a versatile bike & great fun to ride.

I tested the Trek Checkpoint 2 years ago with shimano 105 groupset. Wasn't really good for the money. I bought the Canyon Grail CF SL 8 in this year and i am very happy. This one had already the GRX 810 Groupset with 2x11. Thats what you need in Germany for climbing a lot.

Didn't see him swapping the brakes over - seemed to be using RH lever to stop front towards end of the video. This model is on my short-list along with Focus Atlas 6.8

I came to see what crank Trek sold with this bike . My new Checkpoint ALR5 same color as this bike came with a praxis crank . I didn't see the crank until I paid and got it home , I'm pissed . Thanks Trek for changing out the GRX parts on me. That doesn't seem real, how can they advertise a group set and install different parts ?

Same here in Japan. I saw both in their stores that has the praxis and the grx. They didn’t change it. You just accidentally got that one..

@@mocochan_channel741 ... Trek is installing what ever parts they can get because of parts shortage Not that I accidentally got the wrong part. I have call other states that have these bikes in stock and they'll have Praxis cranks also.

So if you have a gravel bike, changing to thinning tires, gives you a road bike?

The trails shown in the video look very similar to the ones I ride in Terrey Hills. Is the ALR 5 good for rocky fire trails ? When is the next episode coming?

Thanks for posting! I'm curious of what the big difference in spec is between this and the SL5 model other than the carbon weight savings (which doesn't look like much on the Trek site).
@jtsblocks
@jtsblocks 2 года назад
That is the only difference. Oh and the frame storage on the carbon model. Which I do think is nice but I’m getting the aluminum.

The carbon models have the Iso Speed Decoupler system as well, whereas the ALR 5 does not.

I ordered an ALR 5 in November last year. Trek said would be delivered mid February, now saying sometime between April and late May. So how can they be giving stock out for review when paying customers are waiting?

Geoff I understand your question and recognise your frustration. Alas, I cannot answer your question on distribution: I'm going to talk about the bike (and film it), but other matters are beyond my control. For the record, when we talked about a review bike, I asked that I only be provided with what's available (realising that there's a significant delay on many bike orders). Perhaps it's worth just checking with your bike shop and them checking with Trek (probably ... yeah, probably "yet again" - and I get it...). Hopefully you get yours pronto. - Rob

Exact same situation for me! I ordered in October of last year with a date of Feb that got pushed to April-May. I have been in contact with my LBS and they said it should be leaving Trek this week.

where is the rest of this series?
@ride-media
@ride-media 2 года назад
Yeah, fair question Nigel. Sorry, but there are plenty of reasons for the lag in follow-up, but - as Armstrong once told me - "Excuses are like arseholes: everyone has one and they all stink." The point is: I'm meaning to explain more about this bike - as there is a lot to like - but circumstances have delayed the filming of more about the Checkpoint. - Rob

Nigel... there are more videos from this series now on the RIDE Media channel... starting with this one, which explains the long lag: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dkipwh4Xjpo.html - Rob
