Heads up! If you want to follow this series ALWAYS start with this video to understand the basics AND to save me a lot of questions: How to test your main electrical bike components (part 1 of 2): • Wiring a motorbike (or...
If you want to ask me further questions, or if these video's are just valuable enough for you to thank me in a different way than the usual 'thumbs up', consider to become a Patron of me. You find the link here: / chiefpep
Thanks!
This is the first part of wiring my bike. I first start with replacing a faulty stator. I noticed it had a short circuit while I was making my video of how to check your electrical components (watch it here: • Wiring a motorbike (or... )
There will be more parts on this topic since I can't put it all in one video.
- The distribution block is a Blue Sea distribution block. Please just Google it to find the easiest way to find it in your country.
- The thickness of the cables are mentioned in my second part of the 'basics' video. Link here: • Wiring a motorbike (or...
See my channel for all the other video's I've made of me building my bike.

Been watching this from the beginning. It’s the education reasons I watch. TRV does a good job with the diagrams, but having a video is much more valuable to me. Don’t shorten the wiring videos, this is what I have been waiting for.

These are some really great videos, my friend. In my opinion, they are the best on RU-vid when it comes to this kind of sharing. I have a suggestion, anyone can take it or leave it but on the coil side of the solenoid (with the small nuts), It's wired this way, one of the small of the terminals goes to positive feed and the other small terminal goes to the momentary starter switch. (which in most cases grounds the circuit) when pushed completing it and causing the solenoid to activate.. Some solenoids have a copper connector going from one of the large terminals and it goes to the small terminal right next to it...the big wire (always hot high amperage battery cable) from the battery goes to this one, so it makes one side of the small terminal aways hot as well. When I wire a bike from scratch I use a 12-volt red LED (polarity observed) in the solenoid - starter switch circuit on the low amperage wire coming from the starter switch to the solenoid coil terminal. It's a simple thing to do, and it lets me know instantly if there is something wrong in that circuit If anyone sees a problem with doing this please let me know. But if anyone thinks it's a good idea...well please let me know as well. :) Keep up the good work Chiefpep. "Bob's your uncle."

Hi Ray. Thank you so much for your compliment and your suggestion. It sounds really interesting. Although I think I have to read your suggestion two more times I think when I consider to this, I think I understand it will be some sort of 'all systems ok' dashboard light but then under the seat. Right?
@singerray1
@singerray1 5 лет назад
@@chiefpepdesign Actually, I put a USB charger (fused) connected to the battery and a miniature LCD voltmeter (only about an inch in diameter) on my bikes, They make some especially for motorcycles that have both the USB charger and a voltmeter It tells me the condition of the charging circuit...battery, stator, rectifier, fuses etc. at a glance. They just may keep me from being stranded somewhere I don't want to be with a dead battery. Usually, I install the voltmeter on the left side cover on the top if it's flat there (they come with a rubber flap which keeps the water out.) That's where I sometimes put the starter button too on the left side cover (under the left side cover) on the bottom out of sight. The USB chargers and the voltmeter can be bought on eBay for a song, as can the green or red 12-volt high amp leds.. The best part is if the led ever goes bad it shorts so there will still be current flow when you hit the starter button and I'll know that it's just a bad led cause that is all it could be.. You see the LED in line with starter button circuit can be mounted on the top of left side cover as well. Red or green your choice and it only lights when there is current flow to the solenoid. You can put it all USB and LCD voltmeter and the 12-volt led on a bike for around $15.00 to $20.00. Well worth it.

Cool video as usual...for me that would be the hardest work relating to the rebuild,(editing the video clips)! The only suggestion i have for better, cleaner looking wiring with minimal future trouble, would be: get more heat shrink tubing, and use it instead of tape wherever possible! Heat shrink tubing is relatively inexpensive, comes in any length, many different colors, sizes, thickness, and etc... It helps to keep the connections and wiring more secure, more water and outside environment resistant, and it won't unravel or leave any sticky residue anywhere. (when you think about it...tape really does suck!) Heat shrink tubing is to electrical wiring like a sunny day and winding back roads are for motorcycling! Keep up the great work! Enjoy!

How how do you match the wires when the color codes don't match older bike after market switches
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 3 года назад
I kind of do the same in my video's. De the switches don't match the bike. But obiously, they do the same. They let the positive feed through, or they close the feed. That's it. You can put any wire in that gives positive current. So basically what you need to do is for instance, find the headlight positive lead, and connect that to the switch of the light. Then it just needs positive current from the other side. Very best is to just watch this video and really don't skip it and watch it to the end. Take a cup of coffee, or a beer, and just watcht it carefully. You will be so much more confident afterwards ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m2cGSZlpznc.html

En heb je achteraf dezelfde terug gebruikt of alles nieuw geplaatst ? Keep up the good work !! Je kunt bijna genieten van je project ! grtzz
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 лет назад
Hi Kenneth. Succes!

I am from Holland so I guess it doesn't really make sense to mention the Dutch shops. It's a mix of several shops. These are just sorting boxes from the Home Depot. I use as I mention in the start of the video that these are AMP superseal connectors. The wires I collect from several online shops (mainly Dutch). Most of the time I go to car audio online shops. They have the nicest and broadest choices in my opinion. Also Marine (watersport) shops are very nice to have a look at. For instance the Blue Sea distribution block comes from a Marine shop.

This is the most interesting part (Electrical) for me to watch, this is going to be a benchmark for me to follow. Very simply explained and you are doing a Very fine work. is that the fuse box or a M-Unit, you mounted? what gauge wires are you running to do the overall wiring (besides 2 main ground and + from battery.) I see you have fixed Airpods filters to carbs, what are the dimensions (size) of it? I am always looking forward for your next episode. Thank you.
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 лет назад
Hi Nirjan. No it's not a M-Unit. It's just a distribution bus and fuse box. The distribution bus is very handy since a lot of wires need the same source. And, you need a fuse box anyway so why not combine both. It's from Blue Sea. You can Google it. The gauges vary. I like to use the most thick ones (the thick ones for ground and secondary part of the Solenoid) are 10 Gauge. The next would be 14 and thinest 16. I try to use the same thickness as the original harnas tells me. Otherwise I use the Gauge overview of Dan (aka totallyredvirago) of the Virago forum. You can use that sheet. In most cases you use 14 gauge for positive in to something that needs feed.

1) This keeps the wire more flexibel to route it. And 2) it would take a lot sleeve and 3) this looks better imo... More 'technical' instead of 'slick' in a negative way.

Hey Pep! At 12:02, you create a ground/negative cable from the battery to the distribution box. But your Distribution is already grounded to the frame. My question for you, does the battery - or distribution box - require a negative/ground wire connection to each other (battery to distribution box)? Or can both the battery and distribution box just have their own grounds to the frame? Asking because my battery and distribution box are far from one another. Thank you in advance for reading and replying.
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 3 года назад
The ground is very weak on this bike. Since my distribution box spreads all the wires to the bike I make sure in this way the best possible ground is made.
@BIGGZ46
@BIGGZ46 3 года назад
@@chiefpepdesign will it work the same if I did not run a wire from the distribution box to battery? I just grounded the distribution box to the frame
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 3 года назад
@@BIGGZ46 yes, that should work. But I would always run a direct negative aswell since this bike has serious grounding issues.

Well I'm completely new to it all but getting the hang of it. At the moment I'm just trying to get the bike running so I can get a feel of it. I've managed to get power back but now nothing happens when I hit the ignition switch, I've replaced the starter solenoid but still nothing. The ignition switch is in terrible state but I assumed if I made the connection from the wires themselves i would get some sort of ignition. Anyways I'm still troubleshooting the old loom for now, slow progress...

The M unit is only for the lights and horns... This won't solve anything. The rest is basically my 'part 2 of 2' barebone video. You could try and wire it up like that... If you have the time and patience offcourse. It's always easier said than done.

What does grounding your starter do? I’m working on an XV750 myself and was curious because mine has no ground.
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 лет назад
Well, the starter needs a plus and minus (positive and negative) in order to work. It get's it positive straight from the solenoid, but the negative is from the engine (ground). It's just pressed to the engine with the two long Philiphead bolts (I replaced them for alllans). That ground is not enough. It's very weak. Therefore a lot of starter motors rotate not so strong and fast due to the weak negative/ground. If you give it a strong straight to the starter negative, this is solved. I explain this in the dedicated video on starter motor problems. You should watch it to better understand it.

My virago stator reads 1 ohms on all the connectors, but the manual says it needs to be 0.5. Does this mean my stator needs to be replaced?
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 лет назад
absurity Well everything between 0.1 and 1.0 Ohms is ok. The lower the better. What you could check is the part where the wires come out of your engine. They often had a horrible life at that point since the sidepanel comes off and on there. The wires get crushed if you don't watch out. It's exactly the spot which I re-taped in my video. If some of those wires are cut, then the resistance goes up...
@absurity
@absurity 6 лет назад
Makes sense. After I watched this video, I looked at the wires closely and one was very exposed. I tapped it. You're the best! Have you thought about selling stickers, t shirts, and other merchandise? I have bought stickers from all the youtubers that have helped me out with their videos.
