I love all the camping gear tips. My son is 11 and has been camping a lot with Boy Scouts this year. They went to camp in Colorado two weeks ago and he said it was so cold! I think I’ll get him the sleeping bag liner for next time. ….and maybe one for me too!

The combination of the Nemo pad and Zen Bivy sleep system are working very well for me -- even when Michael is very cold.

philmont was great! was there in 78. they supplied the tents back then. maybe because we flew from miami to denver and bused to base camp.

When we did it, we flew from Washington DC to Denver and then rented a 12 passenger van to get us down to Philmont. We brought all of our own equipment.

@@marktgreene I think we went with 4 crews from the south florida council. Each crew did different hikes. But training hikes in the everglades in June wasn't much fun, mosquitoes ate us alive. Still feel the bites 40 plus years later hahaha

Weight tip I learned doing hiking and now do bikepacking: go as light as you can, but no lighter.

I sure am curious to see an "after the trip" gear video to see what you wish you wouldn't have taken. It seems like your packing a whole lot of bags that could easily be condensed to fewer and lighter weight stuff sacks.

Agreed. I am deliberately choosing comfort(s) over speed, and when really in doubt I went with inclusion. I expect I'll drop (send back home) a few things after the first week and especially afer the first month. AND, once I get to Nebraska the temps should be consistently warm enough to allow me to shed some warm clothes and maybe even sleeping gear. And, from Nebraska on, I expect water to be much more available which may impact my cooking and water-carrying needs. But don't be suprised if I decide there's something else I want! That’s a stunning back garden to test out camping gear! I was going to recommend one of those MSR pot scrapers if you didn’t already have one. I’d like to try a jetboil for my tours but I’m quite attached to my trangia system for now. As bulletproof stoves go it’ll probably outlast me. Looking forward to videos from your tour. I’m Scottish but one of my dream tours is to cycle through all the lower 48 states. Can’t wait to see how you get on

That’s my starting weight in TN. I may drop a few pounds before I start pedaling, and then I expect to drop more once the chance of any cold is minimal. That said, I’m definitely going for creature comforts over speed. (And do I REALLY need that heavy kickstand? The heavy power brick? All three drone batteries? Two sets of chamois? Etc., etc.)
