I have been bicycle touring all my life . And never used a van or car for help. The term bike packing got started with off-road Riders .gravel and trails they simply pack their gear different than I use as a touring cyclist with four standard panniers and a handlebar bag.

Very cool, I envy your freedom to do something you love but not necessarily what you will be going through haha it sounds like you have spent alot of time thinking, planning and training for this, you got this!

Looking forward to this and quite envious of the tool wall. A few years ago I did the GAP & C& O tow path as my first bikepacking adventure. We had a family reunion in the Pittsburgh area and live in the Philadelphia area. I told my wife I was going to ride my bike home. She thought I was crazy! HAHA. I learned a lot.

Thanks for the note. I would appreciate any tips or lessons learned you may have, especially about that route. TIA.

@@marktgreene Hi Mark, first off I'm enjoying the channel. GAP/C&O is a beautiful trail & I'm pretty sure that you will enjoy it, but the two are very different consistencies of terrain. The GAP is basically all hard packed crushed stone and the C&O is mostly dirt. The GAP is mostly uphill, but you'd hardly notice it and very well shaded. Never did I even feel the urge or need to get out of my saddle to pedal. The C&O was extremely sloppy and unpredictable since it had rained a lot the previous few weeks. What did I learn. I took too much stuff. It was my first bikepacking adventure and I way over packed, but that was also what made me feel prepared since I did it alone. Things I wouldn't take next time, that I'd taken the first go around. I'd eliminate the collapsible chair, I had too many changes of bibs & shirts. I'd also eliminate my iPad. I just didn't need it all and it added to the weight of the bike. This was particularly problematic when getting to the C&O as the trail was muddy and the bike felt unstable with all the additional weight. A few things that I was glad that I took. Two rechargeable battery packs and a small strong beam flashlight. I was also glad that I had my airpods. Something that I'd do differently. I'd take my time more to enjoy the ride. I'd set an ambitious time goal and always found myself chasing miles. I didn't leave time to detour and check things out or just relax and enjoy the surroundings. I felt like I had to hurry to get to the next campsite since I'd pre-booked everything in advance. Anyway, I hope a few of these are worthwhile. One other thing. There was very little cell coverage along the GAP. Being alone, that did make me a little uncomfortable. Enjoy the trip & I'll be following along.
