Biking around Denmark's third largest city

This week's video is a somewhat more immersive video (vloggy, if you will) with fewer still shots. I was on a bike a lot, hence the title. But you'll get a good idea of some of the streets of Odense, as well as a peak into why I live here in the first place. At some point, I digress a bit from the main story to meet up with a new person who has come into my life, with a specific purpose. Hope you enjoy the video. All the best - Helle

I’ve recently rediscovered my love for learning languages. I’m from Britain and learning Danish, and even though I don’t have higher education in a foreign language (my highest language qualification is a GCSE in French), I hope that one day my Danish will come in very useful. Danish isn’t considered a really popular language or a language that’s as needed as French, Spanish, German or Mandarin is for example, and people often ask me “why did you decide to learn Danish and not French, Spanish or any of these languages?” I really want to go to Denmark one day. Also, as I’m visually impaired and have ASD, I go through periods of having a specific topic which strongly interests me, that which I hyper focus on, but it brings me so much joy when I do this. One of these interests is Denmark and H C Andersen. I’ve been learning lots about this amazing country and the culture. My main inspiration for learning Danish is the fact that H C Andersen’s diaries, fairytales, poems and journals were originally written in Danish. I want to be able to read them all in his own words without having to rely on a less than reliable translation, so he can come to life for me.

What a refreshing video with a bike tour around your city. I particularly enjoy your outdoor videos, whether the video features you walking through nature or biking through various areas. The tours provide a glimpse into Danish life during a time when I wish we could again visit Denmark.

So happy I found this video. I have been to Odense 27 years ago😂 - to visit my husband who got a scholarship in some agricultural high school ( is it still there?). I remember biking long distances - just like you did in the film. So grateful I could see this beautiful place again ❤ Thanks !

Odense looks beautiful, have never been there. I've been to Sjaelland. Lolland and Falster I traveled through by train. Some day I will have to go to Funen and Jylland, especially to the north. Thanks for the lovely bike ride. I can relate to how your head might hurt after 2 hours of French. My spouse is from Colombia, so I do hear Spanish every day. I am familiar with Portuguese, but better at reading than I am speaking. 11 degrees sounds great, it was 8 in Chicago today and windy. Have a wonderful week and thanks again, Helle, for the post.

Thanks for a lovely comment, Marcus. I love that you know some Portuguese; it’s a fascinating language. I listened to it a bit before we visited Portugal a few years ago and practiced pronuncing the street names. I hope you get to visit Denmark again - including Funen and maybe my home town in Jutland 😊

Thank you so much for the tour around Odense. We have visited before but only the tourist spots, so this was lovely. As for accents, whenever we return to Denmark I am immediately told that my accent is from Jutland, which is where I was born but having been away from there for some decades I’m surprised anyone can tell where I’m from given how poor my danish is now. 😀 By the way if you decide to visit Australia and wish to ride a bike, you will have to wear a helmet, it’s the law! I hate them cos I have short hair and the helmet gives me hat hair! Looking forward to future videos
@danishmusings
@danishmusings Год назад
Haha, that cracks me up (the helmet bit), and oh, I was touched to know that you’re originally from Jutland and that there is a small trace of it in your accent 😍

Hi Helle. Isn't it weird that, even though you are Danish, that moving to another part of the land: you can feel like an outsider. I was young when my parents moved from the west of the Netherlands to the north. I did not get accepted, my brother was, though. I learned I had to build my own life after studying. So, I did. Your surroundings are gorgeous, and it makes me happy to see you cycling. I ride my bicycle a lot, too.

What a beautiful city. Never been there, but it's definitely on my list. So nice that you can bike everywhere. As a Dutchie, I must say that it feels like a mixture of Scandinavian and a bit of Dutch architecture somehow. No surprise, as it's quite nearby. Each time I'm in Copenhagen, I often feel like I'm in The Netherlands. 😅

Hi Markus, thanks for your comment. It just so happens that I love Holland, too, and every time I’ve been there, I’ve felt completely at home. You’re right about the similarity in architecture, though nothing beats the center of Amsterdam. I hope you come to Odense some day 😎

What a beautiful little city you live in! Watching this gave me joy! As for learning new things, I have started a new career as a Phlebotomist at the tender age of 59! Now that is a massive learning curve! I have dabbled in language learning, but have never taken it beyond the very basics! Almost everywhere I go, people seem to be able to speak at least a little English! I also toyed with the idea of learning to play the saxophone, but as yet, have not done anything about it! I look forward as always, to your next video, until then, take care!
@danishmusings

Thank you for this comment, Katherine. (I had to look up the word ‘phlebotomist’ 😌) I have to say that many more people in France today know English than previously - but I insist on speaking to them in French. Even when they switch to English as I search for a word ☺️ So glad you got some joy from this video!
