"Bikini -- The Atom Island" is a 1946 short that chronicles the evacuation of Bikini Atoll prior to the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests. The forced re-location of the island inhabitants was just the beginning of an ordeal that continues into the present day, as life was never the same after the tests (which, incidentally, are not shown in this film but took place just after it was shot).
Bikini Atoll is an atoll in the Marshall Islands. The atoll consists of 23 islands totaling 3.4 square miles surrounding a deep 229.4-square-mile central lagoon at the northern end of the Ralik Chain Within Bikini Atoll, Bikini, Eneu, Nam and Enidrik islands comprise just over 70% of the land area. Bikini and Eneu are the only islands of the atoll that hosted a permanent population. Bikini Island is the northeastern most and largest islet. Before World War II, the atoll was known by its Baltic German name as Eschscholtz Atoll.
Between 1946 and 1958, 23 nuclear devices were detonated by the United States at seven test sites located on the reef, inside the atoll, in the air, or underwater. They had a combined fission yield of 42.2 Mt. The testing began with the Operation Crossroads series in July 1946. Prior to nuclear testing, the residents initially accepted resettlement voluntarily to Rongerik Atoll, believing they would be able to return home within a short time. Rongerik Atoll could not produce enough food and the islanders starved. When they could not return home, they were relocated to Kwajalein Atoll for six months before choosing to live on Kili Island, a small island one-sixth the size of their home island. Some were able to return to the Bikini Island in 1970 until further testing revealed dangerous levels of strontium-90. The islanders have been the beneficiary of several trust funds created by the United States government which as of 2013 covered medical treatment and other costs and paid about $550 annually to each individual. As of 2013, about 4880 Bikini people live on Kili and other Marshall Islands, and some have emigrated to the United States. Bikini Island is currently visited by a few scientists and inhabited by 4-6 caretakers.

The whole relocation was a a disaster, first to Rongerik where by 1948 there were dying from starvation, then when they moved them to Kili island they starved again. Kids from surrounding Atolls died from nuclear fallout. When they were allowed back in 1968 they got sick from drinking and eating radioactive water/food.

Yes it was and is a terrible, terrible tragedy. A lot of American vets also were sickened by exposure to fallout at Bikini and other tests. The atomic legacy endures...

As a Marshallese, seeing these people having their last church service on Pikinni, boarding the ship and waving good-bye to their homeland, this made me cry. To a Marshallese, land is our gold, our riches because there is so little of it (small, flat, narrow strips of islets formed into coral atolls). And to leave it all behind, not knowing that they will never return and live safely and freely is just heart-breaking.

If there were ever an advanced course on propaganda, this film would be the centerpiece. As ridiculous as this seems to us now, American viewers of this film most likely bought it hook, line and sinker! This concept still holds true: Don't believe everything you hear, especially from politicians and idealogues.

We destroyed the one place in the world that was untouched by the war......(but it is a great dive site), However I still feel bad for the people who had their homes taken from them. The ones I met were very nice people. This ones for you Edward, may we meet again sometime my friend 👍

Most of the planet was untouched by the war, in terms of theater of battle. Probably less than 5% of the Earth was a combat zone, per se. It's crazy to consider that, though tens of millions died, this was still just 1% of the world population. Perhaps 4 or 5% if we consider the injured and bereaved. Still, anything more than 0% if a failure of mankind.

@@templartookie2122 The original comment suggested that this test site was the one place not touched by the war. My reply simply presented the fact that the original comment was not just false, but extremely inaccurate. The exceedingly vast majority of the planet was untouched by the war. Your reply had nothing to do with the original comment, my comment, or the topic overall. Spare us your racist nonsense. Nobody reads "wypipo" and thinks it signifies anything other than a bitterly ignorant racist sentiment. You will never in your entire life persuade anyone with that approach. @@timramich Not entirely true. Relocating people just for nuclear testing isn't right and the US need to do WAY more to compensate. But you are blowing the long term health effects way out of proportion. Recent research on Chernobyl survivors suggests that trans-generational mutations is very rare which instantly disproves your claims of birth defects. It just doesn't happen unless you were pregnant DURING the exposure. If you got pregnant AFTER exposure, nothing happens.
