"If we don't take action to protect French, it's a matter of time," said Premier Legault after Bill 96 - Quebec's French language reform - was adopted by the National Assembly on Tuesday. Felisha Adam reports.
In a nation that has forced thousands of children to learn French throughout childhood and that offers government services firstly in French a majority of the time. And where no major politician can survive without speaking the language. How in gods name does the CAQ think this blatantly authoritarian law will somehow maintain the French language more than it has already? What a weird and twisted law trying to “maintain” a language of a region that overwhelmingly already speaks it and wouldn’t just die away in a couple of generations based on the societal importance this nation puts on it in the first place.
I found out today that I could lose my job. Not because of an inability to speak French, but because our business deals with a lot of international clients AND have lots of remote workers from around the world who joined during the pandemic. Thus we have to communicate in English. Our boss is already looking at moving operations to Alberta. Something I can't afford to do. Thanks Legault.
If they move to NB they can have both languages and less costly. Quebec must stop butchering the French language but that will never happen. Good luck and I'm sorry you and many more will suffer.
what are you talking about?? have you read the law? Do you even know what it says? aAe you offending people on your assumption and opinion? How canadian of you, how tolerant of you. How multicultural of you.
@Nonpolarized Great idea. Let's have a national referendum to ask them to leave. Why not? We'd be doing the same as they did: have a vote on whether they should leave.
Born here. Speak 4 languages. This is just a thought. business will suffer and shutdown - Many families will move - Property value will decrease - Tourists will me non existent - If I'm paying $600 for a lawyer to represent me. I'm gonna choose the language I want. TY
The rest of Canada should stop subsidizing Quebec give them there separation from the rest of us Canadians and use the transfer payments for the rest of the country..
I don't think the politicians in Quebec have yet realized that the rest of the world is learning English so they can operate worldwide. English is the worlds second language. You are welcome to speak French (or at least your version of it) in Quebec, but if you want to be a part of the wider world...English is the Latin of our time.
@@floxy20 My brother and sister were born in northern QC where not many people speak English and learned English from cartoons. English is simple language to learn, don't even need 1 class a week. Plenty of English on TV in Quebec.
Maybe you'll realise that chinese is the latin of our time. The way they buy the west of canada in 10 years you might have to adopt a similar law to protect english. I travel alot for work, besides north america, england and the us, most people speak english as much as us here in quebec, or some version of broken english enough to comunicate. when I saw the comment I tought to myself only an albertan with a narrow minded view of the world could utter such nonsense rethoric based on a secular point of view. that version of french is why that law is necessary, If one day you come here you'll realise that maybe you should of learned that version of french you seem to despise. I speak 5 languages, worked over 40 countries, babble another 4, still I recognise living here we need to protect our language.
Am about the French language, but this bill is not right. It just reverses the rolls from the past about the English and Franchises. I go to a all French school in my city, but I only speak French if the other speaks it, it’s good to be bilingual but you can’t force people a new language.
totally agree with you. You can encourage the people to learn because it is an asset to know French, but you can not force the people to learn a new language; instead, the government should give the options to the people.
Instead of finding new and exciting opportunities to promote quebec French, they decided to cripple the English and then had the nerve to call it inclusive.
@@yveslorange2689 Et pour ceux qui viennent d'ici, mais qui ne seront jamais acceptés parce que nous ne sommes pas des francophones? What's your advice for that?
Your assumption is wrong, in quebec almost everywhere you go you can get attended in both languages at least 95% of the territory, and a very decent english. When I travel to english canada I can't get french service nowhere, in over 95% of the places I'll get a bonjour and a désolé, and a few voulez vous couchez avec moi ce soir wich I really don't mind. Let's be truthfull, between what people think and reality. If we're to be bilingual let's be bilingual. Not really afraid of bilingualism, afraid of the loss of culture. Past opression from the english who used to shame the québécois for speaking their “poor language” is the reason why there are so many policies that are instilled to protect it. Especially since the english used to and still own most of the rich businesses in the provinces economical powerhouse, Montréal. The fear of assimilation will always be there as long as Québec is still in Canada
I left Quebec during the referendum back in the 90s (parents were worried about separation from canada), anyway just seeing this being passed is only going to cause more fraction between English and French speaking people. But yes let's appauld that they passed a bill that will cause more harm then good...😮💨

yeah right, quebecers speak the old french, the old nobilitas language, quite hard to learn and speak. like everything else folks must be forced to put the effort in.
This will destroy the economy of Quebec, but they don't seem to care because they have the rest of country to give them massive equalization payments. Businesses can't compete using French as a default language on an international stage. This will quickly stall any foreign investment and all the talented and skilled people who can't speak French will be forced to leave.
@@JSkyGemini What is “Terrible” is that so many people are gonna lose their jobs as a result of this, and many business are gonna have to relocate. I recently took a short drive in a city in Quebec after visiting Ottawa and to be honest it was hard getting around because none of the signs were in English and I knew no French at all.
Nonsensical. Discriminating upon one language is no right way to promote another. Promote funding for French classes in elementary schools and provide incentives for those that chose to do business in french. He’ll have no one else to run his shitshow if he puts the rest of us out the door.
Its time to end equalization payments to Quebec. They can do these laws if they want but other provinces shouldn't have to pay for the economic consequences that this will cause them just all the consequences that came from the referendum. It is claimed that Canada has two official languages. However, only one province out of 10 and 3 territories has bilingual status, namely New Brunswick, to the detriment of the Francophone minority of these provinces and territories, which benefits from limited services, if only the number of Francophones justifies it; otherwise, everything is done in English. Only Quebec has French as its official language because its population is predominantly French-speaking, whose language and culture, unique in North America, are threatened with extinction in the medium term, due to the prominence of English all around ( Canada-USA). Why in English Canada do we not understand this? Why is it racist to pass a law that aims to protect these linguistic and cultural assets, which in no way threatens or deprives the English-speaking and allophone minorities of the province, which account for 12% of the population, the most pampered minorities in the world according to the UN.
Quebec is never in danger of losing the french Language , the French just want more control and to heck with the English Language , i don't know why Canada even let Quebec have its own Government way back when
