Retired professor of education Bill Ayers encourages educators to “be realistic, demand the impossible.” In a society that spends trillions on wars and prisons, he challenges the oft-heard response to prescriptions for a better world: “we can’t afford it.” In questioning what he describes as a three-pronged assault on public schools: privatization, teaching to the test, and attacks on teacher unions, he asks “is education a product, or a human right?”
