Neglected to mention the great HALL OF Famer Jan Stenerud who played primarily for the Kansas City Chiefs including their slaughtering of the minnesota vikings to win SUPERBOWL IV and even the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP series against the NFL at 2-2. This historic win proved that the AFL was no fluke as the AFC teams would go on to dominate the NFC for the most part of the next 15 years. Jan style of kicking went on to dominate not only professional football but college and high-school as well. Not bad for an exchange student that came to AMERICA on a snow-skiing scholarship!

😮bill b is the living master of football coaches. He is an ocean if knowledge. When he was defensive coordinator on the Giants, that defense turned into a great defense. Listening to him is always a special thing . The only comparison I think would be Buck Showalter in baseball. These guys are incredible, it seems to me... and were lucky they're here. Learn what you can, while you can !!!

Most sports reporters, are the same as video game reporters. They're fans, who probably didn't play at a high level (for video game journos, its ever make/ship a game) and throw up either soft ball questions, or just annoying/obvious questions that are wasting time. In this case, an actual roster building question, gets a descriptive answer, versus "so is [insert random player] healthy?"

Editors push journalists to ask "obvious" or "redundant" questions because that's what readers want: Who is playing? How healthy are they? What's the gameplan next week? All things coaches never want to reveal and will dance around. Bill is amusingly blunt about refusing to answer, but no coach answers. Everyone is doing their job. The journalists wish they could ask better questions too - they would all rather be doing documentaries like 30 for 30, but they have daily reporting jobs, not columnist roles. It's actually indulgent of this journalist to ask a "real" question because he will have to fight his editor to publish anything about long snappers that isn't immediately urgent (like the snapper just got cut or something).

Well anybody in the American football world will tell you Belichick is a football historian, stuff like long snappers and their evolution, he could give an in-depth graduate-level lecture on this, similar to this video. It seems that out of all the questions, a question by a reporter showing his curiosity into the historic evolution of long snappers probably made Belichick's day. Where he can talk to this reporter, answering his question, while giving him a good breakdown of the evolution of long snappers since the beginning of the game. Maybe leaving the reporter curious enough into going deeper in research into this topic.

And if you ask the right question, he'll hand you a report on a platter. There were so many different side routes the story of long snappers can go based on his answer here.

Well the job of reporters is mostly to report on the current situation of a football team whether that be injuries, player performance, or opponents. Bill would rather not go in depth on those questions for a number of reasons. Those aren’t bad questions though

I have a feeling the journalist was sitting at home thinking "what the FUCK am I going to ask this guy?" Someone must've tipped him off. He went to a bar to drink away his sorrows, knowing he'd never crack Fort Belechick, and some veteran journalist got his attention... "Psss...ask him about long snappers." "Long snappers? Why long snappers?" "He fucking loves talking about long snappers. Pretend like you give as much a shit about long snappers as he does. He will melt like butter." "Really?" "Fuckin' long snappers. I was a D1 punter, and I always marveled at our long snappers. Jetting the ball 15 yards on the money while upside down is not easy, then you add the rush and playing defense afterwards. Our starter could put it on your hip, every time with heat AND pick up a block. Definitely unsung heros of the operation.

I still remembered that long hour TV interview he gave a few years ago while walking the Gigants Stadium before its convertion; he pulled out a few tears remembering his 12 years in that "Finest Organization" as he put it. He was telling all these stories about LT, Peppers, Parcells, etc, his life during those wonderful years as a defensive coordinator for the Gigants. I think for him those were his best years in football. Lots of memories, victories and championships working under Parcells, his mentor. Think he is trully a Gigants at heart.

Long snapping is so hard. People don’t realize that they have to have the ball have the same exact rotations over that distance every time give or take a quarter rotation one way or the other. Any time it’s not, you’re increasing the odds of the laces being in the wrong spot because the holder can only adjust the ball so much before the kicker is there to hit it. It’s amazing that guys can be so consistent with their snap

To be honest, it was a good question only if we admit it was coming from someone covering football but knows nothing about football and has probably never played outside of maybe High School. Here’s the easy, basic answer to this question No, not consistently. Here’s one of the main issues. Even if a snapper could play both ways, if he’s practicing with let’s say the offense, he can’t be practicing with the kicker and punter all practice like they usually do and then your kicking and punting suffers. Also, if he gets hurt while practicing or playing in the line, you have to put someone else with less experience and your games could come down to a bad snap

@ SharkAcademy It was a Devils advocate type question. You are one of those people that when someone asks a question, you assume their opinion on the matter, simply because they asked a question. A horribly un-intellectual position to take. It’s called a discussion. Furthering knowledge is not a bad thing. Asking for someone else’s opinion, (In this case one of the premier experts in the topic) opinion does not reveal someone’s ignorance. The fact that you think it does reveals yours. The reporter knows why the position is specialized. He also no doubt knows that things have not always been that way. He was simply thinking about the topic and wanted a great football minds opinion on the topic. Obviously you know everything in the world there is to know but other people seem to expand their knowledge by asking experts. We can’t all be as smart and perfect as you. And by the way, as obvious as this all is to you now, things have not always been this way. Some of the greatest minds in football history, Lombardi, Landry, etc would consider dedicating a whole roster spot to long snapper stupid. This is not gospel. Such thinking had evolved over time. For most people at least. I’m sure if you were alive in the 50s and 60s you’d show those dummies Lombardi and Landry what’s what...

What i love most about this is not so much how in depth he goes into longs napping, but how having to account for that position relates to the rest of the football team and other roster decisions. Not only does he tell you why, but he provides context as well

As someone who reported on sports events...I can tell you that he will get flack from his boss for not asking questions that would be controversial. People dont click on videos or sites to read a long story about the history of long snappers...they want the why did Kraft call you the biggest ahole of his life 😂

@@JP-wm1cc True, but I think most of the journalism companies who talk to BB know that he won't give you anything if you don't ask questions the right way. You have to build that rapport and if you ask a clickbait question, then you wasted your question because he won't give you anything. And if anything, this became the headline story on all news media from the entire interview BB gave, so I think this reporter probably got praised for this one since it worked out as well as he could have possibly hoped.

I only made it to 4.5 minutes in and realize this guy just simply knows everything about football. He's run all these situations over and over in his head and discussed with staff and owners and can maximize chances to win with whatever personnel he has at his disposal. As I’ve grown older I’ve started to care less about MY specific team that I root for (GB Packers) and more about the strategy, mindset and leadership styles of the different coaches around the league. Bill is such an interesting guy and he really loves the game and makes it enjoyably for all of us to watch. He’s a brilliant guy and extremely professional. You have to give credit where it’s due.

I played football through high school and have watched it since I could remember. For a couple years I was an assistant defensive coach for a small high school team that won a championship in our second year. My focus was on the linebackers, of which we generally only ran 2. I consider my knowledge of football well above the average fan but compared to Bill I'm basically a graduate from a trade school compared to a guy with multiple doctorates.

I played 4 years of d2 football, mostly as an OT. Junior year I was asked to take over long snapping after our regular RG/snapper tore his Achilles. It was easily the most difficult single skill I was ever tasked with learning, in athletics at least. I compare it to tossing horseshoes while standing on your head.

But being super-competitive means you are always looking for an edge, and he may have crossed a line or two looking for an edge. That doesn’t mean that most of his success is illegitimate. It most certainly is not. And if you think he’s the only coach who crossed lines to compete, that’s a very naive assumption.

I’m a Steelers fan and I remember Chuck Noll being very resistant to having a full time long snapper. They had some really embarrassing moments in the late eighties because of it. I forgot how many punts Harry Newsome had blocked in 1988 but it was a lot and the main reason was bad snaps

Honestly this is probably one of the best questions I’ve heard from a reporter. Reporters ask so many basic questions and you often get “canned” responses. We need more questions like that and you will by default get more answers like this.
