At Spear's 500 Live, private client professionals - from wealth management, philanthropy, luxury, law and property - gathered at The Savoy to share insight, strengthen networks and hone their understanding of the forces that shape the lives of ultra-high-net-worth clients.
Spear's Editor-in-Chief Edwin Smith was joined by Bill Browder, CEO of Hermitage Capital Management - previously the largest foreign investor in Russia until 2005.
Browder spoke to the 500+ audience about his first-hand experiences uncovering corruption and money laundering in Russia; and the tragic death of his lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and his campaign in Sergei's name.

Watching the two speakers is educational. It provides a sharp illustration, between on the one hand a professional individual who speaks from experience, competence and the highly risky management of both his professional and his personal life stages; and on the other hand an ideologist who has little to offer, sticks to the weak rationalisation of his opportunistic opposition to the Western support of an invaded independent country, and has little (if anything) to say on the merits of his supposedly humanitarian support of Russia. We do know who’s credible and worthwhile listening to.

I would think his concern is justice, not necessarily peace. Those aren't necessarily compatible in cases where the only way to bring justice is by force and when state level scales by war. By giving Putin everything he wants would bring peace but certainly not justice.

It’s always easy to know what is right and what is wrong. People that have too much reverence for money are the ones that have a hard time doing the right thing. In the year 2000 I was running a construction company that I started in 1986. I turned in a person at a hospital that was demanding kickbacks. I had to wear a wire with LAPD recoding the payoffs as I made them at a restaurant I ultimately even had to testify in front of a grand jury. It was scary as I also had my life threatened and as happens to whistleblowers my company was punished by the very hospital we helped. We were not asked to bid work for 5 years. However, I’m glad I did the right thing as my 9 year old son saw the whole thing. My wife later told that if I had cheated with another woman she might have forgiven me but would surely have divorced me if I had gotten involved in the kickback scheme.

The interviewer and a number of the questioners betray the moral squalor of too many in the financial community. A common thread was ‘how can we just go back to making as much money as possible without having to worry about how monstrous Putin and his henchmen are’. The objections to sanctions were particularly vacuous and intellectually bankrupt.

I live in Austria and always get annoyed when people confronted with Ukraine bring up Iraq. Can't they really see the difference? The US conducted precision attacks on key areas and the actual war was over in a month or so. They did their best to avoid civilian casualties, as far as I know. Yes, the invasion was a mistake and they got into a quagmire with many victims and people kept fighting and dying for years to come, which is sad and terrible, but Russia is committing crimes against humanity in Ukraine, targeting civilians on a massive scale and committing atrocities, destroying nature and risking a nuclear catastrophe. The crimes committed in Iraq were exposed by US journalists and people were free to express their criticism from the beginning, while in Russia teenagers got beaten up by the police when protesting and now people risk years long jail sentences even for calling it a war.

Thanks for posting. Mr. Browder's long history with finance, Russia and Russia's endemic corruption gives him a unique, detailed perspective on Putin, the oligarchs, sanctions, and proper responses to Putin's war. His efforts to pass the Magnitsky act formed a good baseline for the much more extensive sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. The most disturbing comment was that about trump, It was bad enough when trump won the 2016 presidency through electoral gerrymandering. But even the thought of him winning in 2024 (it would have to again be via. electoral manipulations, not by the popular vote) is deeply upsetting.

Freezing Order is one of the most thrilling and scary books I have ever read ! It portrays a system that is so evil it´s hard to understand such a thing exits today, but it does... This is why we must never seize to support Ukraine until they have won and we can get them into NATO.

I never heard of BB before ( my bad) but wow, how educating was that ? Glad we’ve got people like that on our side. I do feel though that the further we live from Russia then the less likely we are to get informed. There are also many companies still doing business with Russia and I think that should be stopped completely, even if it means losing jobs in the west, but we somehow turn a blind eye. Slava Ukraine.

The interviewer was preoccupied with relativism, while Browder persisted with his focus on what's important. Putin's enablers materially aided and abetted their benefactor's gross transgression.

Browder is a very, very wealthy financier, not a politician or normal person who suffers with a 30 % increase in power and general inflation of 8-9 %. Saying we should stop Russian supply of gas and oil is fine with him. It’s pocket money impact for him. He needs interviewers who hit him hard with reality.

Bill Browder knows more about this stuff than just about anyone and to anyone reading this, I highly recommend both of his books 'Red Notice' and 'Freezing Order' (starting with Red Notice). Yes, the sanctions are working. The ruble is worth less than before, but you should know that the ruble is not trading freely on the on the global exchanges. It's real value is unknown. What we do know is the ruble is in a down-trend. Russia's profit from oil as gas has also slumped due to the sanctions.
