When he referred to Oprahs first five years that was when she was doing sensationalized tabloid style TV, like Jerry Springer. She has cultivated her current brand, but she was down in the gutter appealing to the lowest common denominator when she started. His point was she did what she had to do to reach the next level which is why she should have been able to understand why Lance Armstrong would lie, lots of people just do whatever they have to in order to get to the next level.

I don't want to go overboard with explaining this, but since you asked: The "spread" Bill was talking about when he goes into the gun stores is a thing the projectiles from shotguns do. Most shotgun ammunition fires multiple little pellets called "shot." Shot comes in a bunch of different sizes from really small for hunting birds and snakes to much larger sizes for hunting deer. When the pellets leave the end of the shotgun, they start to spread out as they go down range. Some people think this spread means that you don't have to aim a shotgun, but at distances you're going to be using it to defend your house or apartment, the shot doesn't spread that much. I think that answers your question, and I hope that makes sense. If it doesn't answer your question, let me know and I'll see if I can find a RU-vid video to recommend that does a better job of explaining it.

When Oprah first started, she had all kinds of sh-t on her show. She knocked Phil Donahue off the air and she got more power and changed her show to "cleaner" fare. Not so much garbage. Then all others came out and started pushing the garbage shows, many of them. I pointed out to my wife that I had never seen a womens magazing, that pushed, "womens power", "you don't need a man", "you can make your own decisions", BUT all of these magazines had many Horoscopes, and Fortune Tellers which did the same thing, and one day she showed me an Oprah Magazine that has NONE of those Horoscopes or Fortune Tellers!!! Not even in Advertisements.

Oprah was a news correspondent that was doing menial stories she was given by her Chicago network station, until she grew in popularity. That got her her talk show but still, the major network gave her the show's agenda until she became famous and was allowed to make up her own agendas.

lol YES, re early Oprah. Since that was 1985-1988, it's a well-buried secret by now. She did mildly Springery topics for awhile til she overtook Donahue in the ratings and then decided to change to a positive format. Burr overstated for comedic effect just how bad her topics were, tho. There was a point in 88 where talk shows included Morton Downey, Jr, who was an enormous asshole, and it was also when Geraldo got his nose broken by a chair thrown at him by a skinhead. Then the media got on all hosts and Newsweek called it "Trash TV" That's the time when Oprah decided to distance herself. They discussed that whole scene on a CNN weekend filler show called "The 80s". Just saw it a few wks back, but I'm old for YT, so I remember all that stuff.

So Bill is suggesting that Oprah should have understood why Armstrong did what he did, but she acted as though she didn't. She should have.

Her competitors often went further eg Geraldo fights, Jerry Springer yelling matches, Maury Povich, etc. She was never the "saint" she is made out to be. In 2011 Oprah started OWN(Oprah Winfrey Network). One of the primary draws of the station, in 2013, was a show called '7 Little Johnstons' A show about a "little people" family. This Conan interview is from 2013.

Yeah, back before Oprah took off, her show had all the sensationalist stories and sketchy guests that a lot of other shows had, so Bill's comedy there is, as always, spot on.

I don’t know if anyone else has answered your question about the shotgun “spread”. Shotgun ammunition has a bunch of little tiny pellets in each cartridge, instead of just one bullet like in a pistol cartridge. When all those pellets go blasting out of the shotgun barrel they start to fan out or spread out. The further away they get from the gun, the bigger the spread, If the target is too far away the spread is so big and the energy each pellet contain is so small, they won’t do much damage at all. Up to about 50 or 75 yards though, they’re very effective. Hope this helps.

What are harder jobs to do than raising a child? Oil rigger, commercial fisherman, astronaut, fireman, skyscraper construction worker, soldier on cambat status - and women do a lot of these jobs - but if a woman had an uncomplicated birth, if she has a husband earning their support and a stable decent house or apartment to live in, if the child is old enough to go to school for 6 hours a day - yes, it's tiring, exhausting at times, lonely it can be - but the child keeps growing and becomes more and more self-sufficient over time - while the oil rigger is still 20 stories up on a platform over the frigid stormy North Sea, manhandling steel pipe that can swing and crush your hand or worse - if you don't want children, don't have them, but don't complain if you do - men actually help raise children too, more these days maybe than previously - so Bill has a point, he just makes it harsh for the comedic provocation value

Oprah, Phil Donahue, Sally Jessie Raphael, Geraldo Rivera, Used to do variety shows many times displaying the genuine heartfelt newsworthy stories; but some featuring many different people, little people families, pornstars and their wild lifestyles, people getting cosmetic surgery and piercings, wild teens, Something like Jerry Springer but before He got his show. I remember watching Geraldo Rivera get his nose broken during a fight on his show. Anyhow, Oprah used to host shows very differently from the ones she hosts today. Before she could afford to make her own decisions regarding themes I would suppose. Could have been 3 decades ago or more, so tough to remember.

Regarding the comments comment. I'm a youtuber myself and deal with the same crap. I had a video eulogizing my dad when he died and it got a handful of thumbs down and a couple of nasty comments. What you have to realize is that there are some people out there with totally empty lives. They have nothing, produce nothing, add nothing to human civilization. They just sit there and attempt to make themselves feel relevant by attempting tear other people down. It's like a sport to them. As a woman I think some women are mean, evil, greedy, trifling, bitter, vindictive and spiteful when it comes to their ex’s. Most of the time when a woman doesn’t want the father of her children to see them, it’s not because he’s a bad father it’s because she’s a bad mother.
