Bill says he is an "Army Brat" so he's pretty much from everywhere. He came to New Orleans to get away from a bad situation and to follow his dream of working on a river tugboat.
At first, Bill tried to look for a work but could not find employment. Plus, because he does not have proper ID, he could not get the document needed to work on tugboats. Being resourceful Bill started to make necklaces to sell.
Just before I started to record Bill's interview; a waitress at the restaurant right next to us told me that Bill knows more about what was going on than anyone inside.
Bill sleeps in an abandoned building with three other homeless people. They watch each others back.
Bill is still working on getting the ID needed to work on tugboats. He says it's a way of life that will take care of all that he needs. I hope Bill can get on a boat before the cold hits.
Bill wished that people would stop stereotyping others. Such an awesome wish!
***if you are in or near New Orleans Bill I need to get in contact with Bill. I misplaced the paper he wrote his Facebook info on. I would like to help him sell his necklaces online.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I met bill in 2014. He gifted me a necklace because I was homeless for a lil while. I buried my brother with that necklace because I cherished it. And the colors reminded me of my late brother. Bill is amazing. And full of love. God bless you man!!

MY DREAM...To chronologically map out and locate every one of these precious folks Mark was fortunate enough to interview, then film an update if possible, find out if services for the homeless communities in the area have improved or remained stagnant, and what if anything has changed in the way homelessness is being handled there (including decriminalization and forced moves) since Mark's last visit...plus any other pertinent info/stats. Now to hypnotize Mark and convince him this is an amazing idea! 😁

Dear Invisible People is it possible for you to create a website for this man so that he can sell his chains online? Many artists are selling chains and necklaces online. Thank you.

Seeing him spin the cross throughout the interview was neat! I too was on a tugboat, temporary duty in the Navy. Some of the best duty I had. His observation of having nothing to worry about is a fine representation of life on the boat. I would say I worried about rough seas and crappy weather:-) If you have a roof be grateful

Mark if he was born in Germany then theoretically he's German and entitled to sociohilfe! No matter where he lives. And he's entitled to German social security. But sounds like he loves the tugboat life. But if you can find him again he needs to know about the German social system!

I was born in Germany but that's as far as my German connection goes. If both his parents are US Citizens he would be as well. He's a US Citizen born abroad.

Never knew you needed a TWIC card to work on a tugboat. Most of the coastal port jobs require them even if you're not working on a boat. It's similar to TSA pre-approval so they can verify you're not a terrorist I guess. Also probably much harder to get now post 9/11 but don't see why you'd need one working on the river if you're inland and not a first point of contact with goods entering the country. The next step is the Merchant Mariner Credential that's essentially like a passport, you need a TWIC card, and have to take an exam I believe. I looked into this a while ago because I figured if I wanted to work a port job my chances would be better if I already had all that stuff. Never followed through to get it though.

I hate it when the homeless get pets. They can’t take care of themselves, much less pets.

Kali and Madonna Owczarki Niemieckie - You have obviously never bonded with a pet, and that's ok for some people. But...If I found myself homeless tomorrow, I would never survive without my Frenchie. I'm a Disabled Veteran and I also have a chronic illness that sometimes keeps me in bed 24-48 hours at a time...she will not leave my side for anything or anyone (except my dad, but he just passed away). Sometimes my pup is the only living thing I see or talk to for a week; because when your life changes as drastically as mine has the last few years, no one (human) even bothers to check on you anymore. Whereas my Frenchie won't get more than 2 feet away from me unless she needs to go outside, and even then she likes to be able to see me standing in the doorway. Call it separation anxiety or attachment issues if you want, but she is my protector and special guardian angel. As a matter of fact, the precious squished puppy face I'm looking at right now actually saved me from a recent-ish suicide attempt. It's hard to explain, but I swear she was somehow willing me to live and she wouldn't stop nudging me and barking until I finally managed to get help. I'll never be able to put into words the love I have for this beautiful, amazing creature God blessed me with. So if I lost everything tomorrow, her and I would do homelessness together (in a mild climate). I hope you now see a little different point of view, and realize for some people (like me), their dog's love is the only thing they know they can count on. For others, a dog is protection since so many homeless get robbed on the street. Let's not forget service dogs, therapy dogs, and ESA dogs like my baby girl. If a homeless person acquires a dog AFTER becoming homeless, just because they want it, then it pisses me off knowing the dog might end up neglected or abandoned. NOT COOL!!!

I have had my best friend, Amazon parrot, for years. Last year, when I got divorced, I got rid of all of my belongings and lived in my van for a few months. My best friend was right by my side 💕 I love him so much and he is a great comfort and a wonderful companion for me. There's no way I'd get rid of him.
