Remembering at CBS he was following David Letterman, and he felt the responsibility, as David wanted Tom to follow him and no one else, that was a feat to live up to, and probably made him more cautious and nervous at not failing.

I agree,, I remember watching TS on CNBC regularly and I was amazed how good he was, he really was the best he'd ever been, or ever would be. Letterman producer Robert Morton recently did a podcast and he said when Snyder went to CBS all a sudden he got lazy..and it showed. I can't disagree with Morton, plus I think Snyder didn't have the energy to maintain such a high quality..he had enormous talent but man, it's a lot harder than it looks.

Based on Tom’s comment at 14:50 (and the fact that Letterman was routinely calling in to his show), it sounds like they were already in talks for Tom to host the Late Late Show. At any rate, very glad that worked out.

I think the problem was that Tom now had competition to think about. Conan had been weak ratings wise but after Tom was hired, Conan started to finally click.with the audience. The main reason Tom was hired by Letterman is that Dave always regretted that his Late Night show replaced Tom's Tomorrow show (not that Dave had anything to do with that). But Dave always had tremendous respect for Tom. Costas would have been the better fit. Don't get me wrong, I loved Tom. As an insomniac kid, his Tomorrow show got me through many sleepless nights. It would have been better for CBS to go with Jon Stewart and your MSNBC scenario would have been better for Tom, but hindsight is always 20/20 and no one knew about the future with MSNBC. I think it was a mistake for Tom to keep taking calls on TLLS since it wasn't live. I loved Tom's CNBC show and wish it had continued but I'm sure he enjoyed the big pay increase he got by going to CBS and we got Charles Grodin's show because of it.

Around 10 years ago I downloaded a huge collection of George Carlin clips (HBO specials, television shows, more). It's on one of my backup drives. When time allows, I'll punch it up and see if his interview with Tom is included.

Well, I just found the time, because I wanted to know. Cranked up several BU drives and found the collection. Alas, the Snyder interview wasn't included.

@@dongiller - I just watched it. Jerry from Tipton. It didn't sound a helluva lot like Dave but he seemed to have too much knowledge of Indianapolis' roadways. Someone derided NBC for not sprucing up the green room and the hallways. Was that NBC in LA? Or was it NBC in NY? Especially when compared to CBS and the Ed Sullivan Theater. Star and host have a more pleasant experience with a new, more modern experience. NBC - sour grapes for keeping their intellectual property? Dave kept top 10 but NBC kept. the name "Larry (Bud) Melman".

I skimmed through all of my tape logs looking for Snyder's CNBC shows the last few days and jotted down the tape number of any entry I found. I don't recall Kinnear's name coming up. Very time-consuming to check again.

I see! Well, Greg Kinnear appeared on Tom Snyder's CNBC show shortly after he became the new host of Later on NBC, and I believe that he appeared on the show before Tom Snyder appeared on Later.

To your initial argument: Kinnear and Conan weren't players in the slightest during the Leno/Letterman drama in 1991-93. Costas was still hosting "Later," and Conan was selected as Dave's successor in April 1993, long after the Leno/Letterman drama had ended.
