The problem with this video is that it skips the actual story it speaks of, where #9 ran them down under green, passed everyone, did it all again still under green, then did it all again, still under green, to retake the lead. Instead, it skips from the oil plug pit stop early to when he's finally back on the lead late-race. The rising tension, and outright stupefied amazement at such a feat, is part of the drama of racing, people.
Bill broke a shock. They changed it and then Bill wore them out! Made up 2 laps under green and drove off! That car was or is in the museum at Talladega.
He showed what the cleveland could do. I saw where Waltrip talked about having a couple hundred pounds of shot where he would unscrew the jack stob from inside allowing the shot to fall outof the frame rail, they cheated Bill out of the title. Hell the Gm cars had to cheat because the small block head design was trash as far as performance goes, ok as grocery grabber.
We were at that race. Everyone watched Elliott the whole race. Unbelievable comeback. He really dropped he hammer when he came out after they repaired the oil line. Looked like he had 20 HP on everyone else.
@@AlonsoRules I've heard that, but NASCAR had template inspection then and there's no way they'd let a Ford by with an infraction like that. GM (Chevy) had Bill France in their pocket
Loved it when Earnhardt would charge at Elliott. Knowing Earnhardt had his Sheyet-o-let to the floorboard and Elliott was backing off in the corners until he saw Earnhardt charge and he would just crack the throttle a bit more and leave the #3 breathing his exhaust fumes!🤣😂🤣😂
As for as Raw driving Talent Nobody was better than Dale Earnhardt. And as far as Bill Elliot he was not even close to Earnhardt as far as driving ability . Maybe in the few years he had way way faster cars but only for that reason . Elliot was no match for Earnhardt as far as pure Driving ability.
The next year Nascar put restrictor plate in the race to slow the Fords down, before that they took action to disqualify the SOHC 427 then the Cleveland engines and the 429 Boss. Poor GM gotta have help to win.
@@Jesusislord3334 piysson you and bully Earnhardt. Earnhardt's "talent" was driving dirty and wrecking people and NA$CRAP didn't do anything to stop him. Case in point, he wrecked Bill in 1987 at The Winston.
Understand I am born in Italy but I grew up in NY and when I moved to the US in 1980 I started watching NASCAR. I became a fan of Bill Elliot and the 9 Thunderbird. I remember this race and the excitement I felt when he won. I also became a fan of one Bob Gliden :) God Bless this country America.
In 1970 at the first Daytona 125, Cale, in his 69 mercury set a new race average of 183+ mph.......that record stood as the fastest race ever in nascar until Bill beat his record by running a 186+ average to come from two laps down under green.
But ain't it great that some of us older than dirt Nascar guys do not forget! We remember those times and those races! Hey Nascar? Why you mess with us, maybe your model is why you've lost us.
Talladega used to be such a great race. This race, Davey Allison's first win in '87 and Dale Sr passing everyone in 3 laps to win in 2000 were terrific.
I liked Sr's 1st win ever at Talladega in 1983 driving the #15 Bud Moore T-bird better. The only season I ever rooted for him. Just like 1969 was the only season I ever cheered on Richard Petty.
Earnie Elliott built dominant Ford Cleveland engines. The other advantage is the aerodynamics of the car. It was so much better than the Chevolets, Buicks, and Oldsmobiles of the day. When the rules were applied evenly and fairly, the Fords dominated. The Chevys could not keep up.
@@GiDD504whats your point got to do with the price of rice in china.it was legal that's all that maters.it was legal an nobody could catch it so they had to make aero bandaid called the slope back monte carlo.that's why racing sucks let the ones who are smarter than the rest build it an run it. jus like Earnhardt in the 90s on restrictor plate bullshit.they had the most power..ever body wants to down bill his bought him finishing 2nd in 83 500 in a out of date tbird
This is when Earnhardt cried and said we got to slow those Fords down. Then they changed the rule and started restriction plates are cars. Killed Nascar.
I'd rather listen to these hall of fame worthy announcers call these races than watch on TV, (I believe this one wasn't televised, I was 5 years old, and I thought that how they trade off announcer duties after every turn cuz one or two couldn't view the whole track had a certain charm to it) actually I remember a couple times when I could view on TV, I'd mute it, and turn on these guys on the radio! Awesome job to Eli, Mike, Dick, and Barney!
RIP 🙏 to the best ever to to do it, Barney Hall and his co announcer Eli Gold Noone could even compare to these 2 back in the 80's and 90's. Too bad all those races aren't being broadcast on a satellite radio channel.
Havinga brother who with in the rules but motor that fit the rule book..ford has two 351 motors the Windsor an the Cleveland bills brother took a set of Cleveland heads an put them on a Windsor an built a dam rocket along with bill Elliott being one of the all time greatest drivers especially on speedway you had a recipe for a asss whooping. This is talked about what isn't is bill in the first twin 125 before the 85 daytona 500 he lapped everbody except 2nd place waltrip who was 39 seconds behind in 125 miles thats getting it done
The Fords would walk away from the pack and that's why Restrictor plates were mandated Bill Elliott still holds the record for speed in his ford Thunderbird at 212.809 miles per hour . Fast forward to todays Nascar and all Nascar engines even chevrolet or Toyota are designed after the Ford small block engine distributor in front of engine and exhaust ports are equal spaced.
We will never see anything like this ever again. Most importantly, we are so fortunate that people had the wherewithal to record the entire races and save them for the future. I can't imagine a world where all this history is lost. We have already lost so much of the earlier years. So thanks to all you boy scouts out there saving this history for all of us. We really don't acknowledge you fellas enough.
I watched that race on tv and those announcers used to call out lap time/speed. I don't remember them doing that when his awesomeness was making up 2 laps.were they told not to?I have always wondered about that.go bill!!!
What happened to the big bad Chevys? Oh that’s right. Dale Sr pushed NASCAR to ban the 351 Cleveland from NASCAR because their 350’s couldn’t keep up. These are the golden years of NASCAR. Chevy and Ford where racing for the lead and wins every weekend. Unlike 2021 where Chevy has almost won 9 races in a row except for one. Toyota and Kyle Busch got lucky because Larson lost a front tire on turn 4 on the last lap while leading the race. I want to see all brands racing for the win.
@Russell Coleman Yeah it’s funny how it’s always the Chevy guys that were always crying, and still are. We Street race and we run a NA 418-Windsor and the Ls guys with their turbos are accusing us of hiding nitrous. Lol!
They say Allison's wreck was the reason for the restrictor plate. I think Elliott scared them worse than the crash by walking the field down 3 times under green to win the race.
Bobby Allison was salty as hell at Talladega. We saw him beat Earnhardt in 86 off the 4th turn, on the damn outside! Then, we saw him tear down the fence in 87. Great 1st win for Davey in the 28 that day. He dominated almost like Elliott in 85 that day
Warning to any super sensitive cars guys stupidity ahead my father in law had a Ernie Elliott built 351c built for bill elliotts car it was not used or even put together because the motor was outlawed he got it in a trade for some paint work sometime in the 90s he sold this amazing motor for $500 because he needed beer money he’s lucky he is still living I would have given him $600 or even contacted bill elliott and asked if he wanted the motor and how much would he give for it but no this Moron sells it for $500 dollars a $20000 piece of history and he sells it do $500 thank you for letting me rant have a great day everyone
So in 1985 when you watched a televised Talladega race, you only got to see half the race. The backstretch wasn't visible at all. This skipped the whole amazing feat... Retitle your video to Bill Eliot makes pit stop under green and wins the Winston 500.
Since Bill ran them down under green, would one assume Bill was probably 3/4 throttle in the early laps of this race? Otherwise, he would've drove away from Earnhardt at the beginning of the race. Dows anyone know the story?
Don't know why but looking back over the past years like the 60's and 70's seemed like nascar had something against Ford I used to watch most all the car races and I have owned and drove all the top three major brands I stopped watching when Toyota started racing and have not watched since. Don't like no kind of front wheel drive cars at all and at one time the cars they raced were kind of like the ones you could go out and buy off the car lots not the same exact thing but very close. They started out racing all American built and owned cars, not just made or put together in America. I think Bill Elliott still holds the record for the fastest lap or M.P.H or he did up until I stopped watching. This is my opinion do your own research and check it all out for your self.
Talladega and Daytona were amazing before restrictor plates and pack racing. Now it's the most boring thing to watch. The only exciting part is the giant wreck pack racing causes.
Made up 2 laps under green. Ernie had that Ford cheated up big time. Bill was half throttling it until the oil leak and they fixed it and he flat footed that Ford the rest of the race. Two laps under green is impossible without leaning on the rules.
